Panhandle Corrections Officer Dies In The Line Of Duty

February 2, 2011

The Florida Department of Corrections is grieving the death of an officer shot and killed today in the pursuit of a suspected double murderer in Holmes County. The officer was assisting the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office in the hunt for the alleged killer.

Correctional Officer Colonel Greg Malloy, 44, was mortally wounded in an exchange of gunfire with suspect Wade Williams. Malloy was working as part of the Holmes Correctional Institution K-9 tracking team. The suspect, wanted for the double homicide of his parents, was also killed during the exchange.

“Words can never express our emotions when an Officer falls in the line of duty,” said Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Walt McNeil. “Tragedies such as today’s underscore the dangers inherent in our profession, both inside and outside the prison walls. We extend our condolences to Greg’s family and his co-workers.”

Malloy’s family issued the following statement: “We will never forget the kindness we received from the public, law enforcement and correctional community during this difficult day. Please accept our gratitude for your outpouring support and kind expression of sympathy.”

Malloy began his career with the Department of Corrections in 1988 as a correctional officer and rose through the ranks.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting the officer-involved shooting investigation.

Rest in Peace, Colonel. And my sincere condolences to your family for their tragic loss. My prayers are with you all.

To those that have despicably thrown political comments in this, a somber, lamentable moment; have you no shame? You remind me of those liars that heaped blame wrongly over the Tucson shooting within moments – completely unrelated to the facts in the case. I pray you see the error of your way and repent of it.

    When love is lost, do not bow your head in sadness;
instead keep your head up high and gaze into heaven …….for that is where your broken heart has been sent to heal. ~God Bless the Malloy family

“GET REAL”—SORRY TO READ YOUR POINT OF VIEW. AS TO SCOTT AND RETIREMENT AGE–IT WOULD NOT HAVE MATTERED MUCH IN THIS CASE

I cannot even come close to imagine all the pain that Col. Malloy’s familiy is going thru right now, but I can tell you about the fear of this pain. Its what we all feel when the phone rings at some crazy time of the night or during the day and the voice on the other end is saying ” I think we are going to need your help with this one” and he is gone before I can say “Please stay safe for me”. May God wrap his arms around each one you that go daily without praise to protect us from all the evil that tries to invade our communities and our lives. My husband will miss his friend . RIP Greg Malloy. May God comfort this family and see them thru this.

My prayers are with the family and friends of Colonel Greg Malloy, and the murderer’s family and friends. I’m sure they are ALL in pain!!!

This is crazy! We’re here reading about a terrible tragedy only to witness some readers who use the families grief as a soapbox for their rantings. I’m sure the Church out of Kansas who protest funerals are looking for some new members! Seems to me they are one and the same and both should not be allowed! Find somewhere else to make your statement or look for another career. Our Military guys could complain about their pay– most of their families are on proverty levels but they are out there, just like our police, fire and EMTs doing what needs to be done. I thank all of you but take the venting elsewhere!

All you conservative republicans who voted Rick Scott into office just because he was a republican without knowing his agenda are getting what you deserve. Next time listen to what the canidate has to say before casting your vote.

I would love expound further, but some of us have to get work and earn our retirement while the rest of you sit around and complain because the gravy train has been shut down.

The loss of Greg is stunning to the community and his fellow Law Enforcement and Correctional Officers. I worked with Greg at Okaloosa C.I. for 2 years (1995 and 1996) . He was one the the nicest persons you would ever want to meet. He paid the ultimate price, doing what he loved to do,”protecting the public and therefore his family”. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and co-workers. We lost a truly caring person, which is reflected in his rapid rise in rank while in the Florida Dept. of Corrections.

  18. ProudArmyParent on February 2nd, 2011 9:22 pm

Now tell me Mr. Scott just how you figure my Correctional Officer husband doesn’t earn his high risk retirement? My husband puts his life on the life everyday he shows up for work and on days he isn’t at work he often runs into an ex inmate on the streets. At those time he has to quickly assess the situation and determine if he or our family is at risk! So please tell me how it is you figure he doesn’t earn his pay?

God Bless you Colonel Malloy. The State of Florida lost a good man and officer. Condolences to your family, friends and love ones. Today I lost a family member when your life was so needlessly taken!

“Rick Scott wants to take away our retirement and we have not had a raise in 6 years!! That’s what Rick Scott has to do with this……”

I thought Rick Scott just became the man to make those decisions? If you havnt had a raise in 6 years it started waaaay before him. And maybe Im wrong but i didnt take what “Be real” said to be offensive to this man and his family. I took it as if he were trying to say if your going to use God in this then dont use half of him. Use ALL of him! The inmate was a troubled person who murdered several people and deserved to die but God says to forgive him. Thats the point he was trying to make. I disagree with “be real” but it is what the bible what says.

I for one am glad this inmate is dead and extremely sorry for this officer and his family. I have several friends that are correctional officers here in florida. Its a sad day in florida and I pray this family can overcome this.

  20. Joe on February 2nd, 2011 9:12 pm

No this is not about politics, retirement, wages or animals. This is about a man that gave his life today protecting the citizens of Florida. It is also about a profession that receives little or no gratitude from those citizens, You all deserve high risk pay, and retirement. Thank you Greg Malloy and all of the rest of the Correctional Officers who put their lives on the line daily.

  21. co on February 2nd, 2011 8:51 pm

thanks tim i would give all of my retirement to rick scott to have greg back i dont care at all about it this is about the loss of a friend that was trying to protect us

  22. Teresa on February 2nd, 2011 8:45 pm

    To Be real,
You should be ashamed of yourself. It is your mindset of showing compassion for the criminal instead of the victim that makes this world as dangerous as what it is. Greg Malloy was murdered today protecting you! Where is your gratitude?

  23. Tim on February 2nd, 2011 8:31 pm

You’re right this is about the loss of this man and his family that he left behind…..

  24. co on February 2nd, 2011 8:24 pm

forget the retirement rick scott wants to screw us with i am a corrections officer and a k-9 officer this should be about the loss of greg malloy and rick scott can have my retirement

  25. RICK SCOTT on February 2nd, 2011 8:04 pm

Rick Scott wants to take away our retirement and we have not had a raise in 6 years!! That’s what Rick Scott has to do with this……Rick Scott and people like you want us to go in harms way to protect the public for little to no pay!!!

  26. Jo on February 2nd, 2011 7:37 pm

The suspect was on the run because he murdered his own mother and father and he dismembered their bodies last week . Colonel Malloy on the other hand leaves a child. Colonel Malloy’s family and child is the ones you should show compassion for as they are still alive.

  27. John Payne on February 2nd, 2011 7:35 pm

So a man goes crazy and kills his family and you are worried about him. What does Rick Scott have to do with this? It is sad that people cannot lay pollitics aside.

TO CONCERNED CITIZEN…..The prisoner was NOT a animal he was a human and he was killed also im sure he had some type of family also…and you use GOD in the same sentence as you was calling a human an animal.

  32. Teresa Hina on February 2nd, 2011 6:00 pm

Colonel Malloy paid the ultimate price protecting the public. Anyone who thinks corrections officers don’t deserve high risk retirement needs to have their brain examined. R.I.P. Colonel. May God bless and be with his family.
