Blog: Pensacola’s Population Down; Government Spending Up $20 Million, Pensions Up $10 Million
The City of Pensacola will vote in November on establishing a new city charter that supporters believe will give residents more control over city government. “Under the present charter, Pensacola voters have very little power. A voter can not impact the direction, programs or initiatives of Pensacola government, without the consent of the city manager and his staff,” Pensacola Independent News Publisher Rick Outzen explained on his “Rick’s Blog”. “The power is with an unelected staff.” Under...
Blog: Where Were You That September Morning?
September 11, 2001. It’s been eight years today. We’ll all ask each other today, “where were you”. So here’s my story. Life, at least when that morning began, seemed good. I’ve always been a work at home dad, so I was home with my two girls. The youngest was almost four months old, and the oldest was approaching her fourth birthday. It was a normal morning. The little one was asleep, “fat and happy” as we used to say, after a morning bottle. The oldest was in the living room just a few feet from my office watching...
Blog: Commission Strikes Out By Taxing Kids
The Escambia County Commission will strike out Thursday night if they vote to tax children. The commission will consider a recommendation at their Thursday meeting that would have non-profit athletic associations assessed a fee of $10 per child, per sport after October 1. Currently, athletic associations that use county-owned parks for little league sports do not pay for the use of the parks. Instead, the athletic associations maintain and manage the parks in exchange for their use. The athletic associations charge players...
Blog: Record Setting Big Day At NorthEscambia, And Thanks To CNN
Tuesday was a big day for NorthEscambia.com, as we reported our biggest traffic day ever with about 1.3 million page views — thanks in part to mentions by several national media outlets. NorthEscambia.com was the first to report that Donnie Stallworth of Brewton had been arrested in the Alabama town in connection with the murders of Melanie and Byrd Billings. We were also the first media outlet in the county to report that he was an Air Force staff sergeant. Fox, CNN and United Press International (UPI) were among the...
Blog: It’s Time For A Change After Animal Control, Livestock Officer Refuse To Help Starving Animals
An animal cruelty incident outside of Century Thursday uncovered a problem in the way Escambia County handles some animal cruelty cases. When a horse, a donkey, two pigs, four goats and dog were found without food and water, Escambia County deputies responded. There was no problem in getting the donkey and the horse rescued from the property. Panhandle Equine Rescue, a non-profit group based in Cantonment, quickly responded to remove the equines from the property. (Click here for that story.) But when deputies called Escambia...
Blog: Stolen Church VBS Signs
This little light o’ mine, I’m gonna let it shine. It was a childish act Friday night as someone stole signs around Molino that advertised Vacation Bible School at Highland Baptist Church.(Read more here.) Stealing is always wrong; we are all taught that when we are what — about three? Perhaps it was someone with something against the church, someone taking part in a prank or someone with serious spiritual issues. Maybe “the devil made them do it” would be their excuse. But sometimes things backfire...
