Taking It To The Streets: Sheriff David Morgan Walks Walnut Hill Neighborhood

For Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan, days at the office are getting back to normal. After the Byrd and Melanie Billings murders cast him into the national spotlight, he was spending a lot of time doing interviews with the big boys in the news business — CNN, FOX, ABC and all those other three letter networks and celebrities like Larry King, Aaron Cooper and even Oprah.
But Friday afternoon, Morgan was back where he likes to be…on the streets of Escambia County. After taking part in Northview High School’s Homecoming Parade, the sheriff, Lt. Roger Grice and Escambia County District 5 Commissioner Kevin White walked Juniper Street in Walnut Hill. It was a chance for 
Morgan to meet some of the residents on a street that is often plagued by crime. Just last week, an Escambia County teacher’s aide was busted on Juniper Street after the sheriff’s department executed a search warrant and recovered a large amount of cocaine.
Since taking office in January, Morgan has walked many neighborhoods in the county, spreading the message that he is serious about crime.
“We have gotten tough on crime in Escambia County,” the sheriff said. “It is not business as usual for criminals in this county.”
“Getting out like this is a chance to meet the citizens of neighborhoods where crime is a problem to reassure them that we care,” Morgan said.
Morgan also made a stop at Escambia Grain — a community hub of sorts – in Walnut Hill to talk to employees.

(And, by the way, I agree Sheriff Smith in Escambia, Ala. does a great job — But the topic of this story was Escambia, Fla. There’s no need to turn these stories into Alabama vs. Florida.)
Proud we don’t have a casino in Escambia County Florida ! I believe that is in Escambia County Alabama.

I personally am very proud of the job that Sheriff Grover Smith has done in Escambia County Alabama. He has done more in 8 years than his predecessor (he that will not be named) did in 21. AND, with Mike Lambert returning to the Sheriff’s Office, I feel they will continue to keep thugs off the streets. What you fail to realize is the difference in available funds. Sheriff Smith has to make due with less than 1/3 of what Sheriff Morgan gets to run a department and hire GOOD officers. Do you know how hard it is to get good, quality officers for $9-10 an hour especially when you are competing with high wages being paid in your county to make sure the Casino is safe. Then those officers are not only working the county, but areas of certain city’s that will not even work their police jurisdiction. Further, the problem you speak of is not with the ECSO in Alabama, but the Police Department in the City of Atmore, who faces these same challenges. Small budgets, small salaries and competition with the PCI for good officers!!
Hey Paula- do you have your Sheriff, Chief Deputy and most of the investigators’ personal cell phone numbers where you can contact them directly (day or night) concerning crime in you area? Do they come out and give you personal attention when you have a crime committed against you? Probably not- but we do!! So don’t throw POO across the state line about things you know nothing about!! Our Sheriff, Chief Deputy and officers are some of the best and dedicated in the State of Alabama. They may not compare in your eyes to the man you put on a pedestal (Mr. Morgan), but I bet even he wouldn’t come to Alabama and run our department for the salary that Sheriff Smith is paid.
nice to see a sherriff do a job that helps escambia county become a safer place for our kids. we needed him yrs. ago! juniper street is a high crime drug area. atmore should take a look at what a true sherriff is in his county. city limits too. keep up the good work mr. morgan!
GREAT JOB Mr. Morgan. Make our streets safe again and also eliminate all the crooked officers from the department and I’m willing to bet you will be re-elected again and again. So far so good.
The north end of the county is getting the attention of the sherrifs office it needed for along time.let it be known among all the criminals and thugs there is a new sherrif in town.No longer will you hide in the rural areas of this county and operate business as usual.in the day of anything is news 24/7 its good to see local elected officials getting out with the people and making a showing for this great area we are fortunate to call home.keep up the good work william keeping us all informed .everything is old news time we get it anywhere else. .A.W. One elected official that I am very proud to say that ” I voted for this man”! Sheriff Morgan has put integrity back into the sheriff’s office and is setting the bar for other politicians to follow….it’s not just about making promises in order to get elected, but following through with what was promised once elected and not forgetting the people who put you in office. Keep up the community walks!

Glad to know that Sheriff Morgan & Kevin White were both out in the Walnut Hill area. In times past there was no one interested in our area so criminals took note of the fact and started moving in. Now we have a real need for the presence of law enforcement. Sheriff Morgan, thanks for what you are trying to do for our county! Keep up the good work. It is long overdue.
Good leadership translates into alert deputies, which in turn leads to a safer county.
This sheriff makes me glad I voted in the last election.
Now drop the hammer on the druggies, Mr. Morgan, and lets see if we can create an environment in our county where ordinary citizens don’t have to fear for their dafety in their own homes.
