Cottage Hill Cockfighting Investigation Leads To One Arrest

April 28, 2017

One person has been arrested for cockfighting after a search warrant was executed Thursday in Cottage Hill.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and Escambia County Animal Control seized 11 roosters from a home on McKenzie Road near Handy Road Thursday, according to Amber Southard, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office.

Terry Maurus Jackson, age 58 of McKenzie Road, was arrested at the home Thursday night and charged with three counts of animal fighting and three counts of possession of a controlled substance. He was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $30,000 bond.

Escambia County deputies executed a search warrant at Jackson’s residence for narcotics and found cockfighting roosters, cockfighting paraphernalia, cockfighting trophies and pictures of roosters. Escambia County Animal control was then contacted, along with the State Attorney’s Office.

Animal control reported that the roosters’ talons had been cut and prepared for cockfighting, according to court documents. They were also found to have injuries consistent with cockfighting.

Paraphernalia seized from the home included “Gamecock” magazine;  medications, needles, syringes, saws, spurs and hooks; a written journal and cockfighting trophies. Written on one of the trophies were the words “1st Place — 5-Cock Derby — Poor Man’s Club 3-18-17″.

Schedule III narcotics associated were cockfighting were also seized, according to court documents, including Trenbolone, Testosterone Propionate and Testerone Acetate.

There was no word if the alleged cockfighting was taking place at the home on McKenzie Road or elsewhere. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office are continuing their investigation.

    With Cock fighting comes dog fighting with either or both of comes, gambling, drugs and alot of doping and drinking. With those things we get alot people doing things they wouldn’t do if they had been straight. Children go to school without lunch money, cause it , and the light bill, phone bill, etc. got gambled away, usually not just one weeks worth but several weeks or months.!!! Depravities of all nature’s come in on the coattails of what some seem to think is a harmless pass time. If the gambler misses a payment on the money he owes the bookie guess what is going to happen to him????
    SOME PEOPLE NEED TO OPEN THERE EYES, THIS IS NOT A SIMPLE THING, DO NOT TURN YOUR HEAD AWAY AND CLOSE YOUR EYES. It could be on your doorstep
    When you open your eyes again!!!!!!!!!

    Wish some of you people would come out to the local chicken plant that kills over 100 thousand a day. An save all those poor chickens. Seeing how concerned you are over 11 roosters.

    (b) Owning, possessing, or selling equipment for use in any activity described in paragraph (a);

    (c) Owning, leasing, managing, operating, or having control of any property kept or used for any activity described in paragraph (a) or paragraph (b);

    (d) Promoting, staging, advertising, or charging any admission fee to a fight or baiting between two or more animals;

    (e) Performing any service or act to facilitate animal fighting or baiting, including, but not limited to, providing security, refereeing, or handling or transporting animals or being a stakeholder of any money wagered on animal fighting or baiting;

    (f) Removing or facilitating the removal of any animal impounded under this section from an agency where the animal is impounded or from a location designated by the court under subsection (4), subsection (5), or subsection (7), without the prior authorization of the court;

    I bet y’all have chicken in your freezers right now. No telling how those chickens died. Maybe fighting other chickens? Who knows?

  7. Azidkid on April 29th, 2017 9:51 pm

    What is the harm? It should be legal to do anything you want to do when the animal is a food item.

    Psst….that prominent P’cola resident that a few have already mentioned….he’s got his own high-protein game bird feed- named after “him”, no less……frankly, I hope that he, or any other evildoer of like persuasion, is feeling the heat of the law, as well. I learned in my psychology classes, years ago, that one early characteristic of a “sociopath” (as an example) is a youngster who can pull the wings off of a butterfly, or set a cat on fire, with absolutely no feeling of empathy towards that creature, for the pain that he/she is inflicting….I feel certain that dog fighters and cock fighters possess some of those same tendencies…needless to say, our prison populations are comprised of a generous share of sociopaths…

    Cottage Hill has grown some since I grew up there in the 60s.
    The Lamb farm on Williams Ditch Rd has a housing development and roads. The Smyers land has housing and several roads. They have road names now and McKenzies, and Parkers have roads named after them. There are still Commings and even a Lamb or too but most have moved on or died., Our grand parents, my aunts &uncles, my mother and close neighbors and are in the Cottage Hill Cemetary. The Cottage Hill School where many of us went till Jim Allen was built is now a church.
    Many new residents have moved in and many things have changed…some good….some bad.. TIME MARCHES ON!

  12. Cottage hill resident too on April 28th, 2017 11:02 pm

    I could care less bout some chickens… but i do have a problem
    with thieves and drug addicts. And there’s alot of them in cottage hill!
    If you live here and you think there’s anything wrong here you must be blind or your in on it! And this place is starting to be a lincoln park/Mayfair /Truman Arms of the north!!!!

  13. Charlotte on April 28th, 2017 10:07 pm

    I was referring to someone on here that said there may be chickens in the house. I said, their house was clean. If you have chickens in your house, such as my relatives had out in the country when I was a young girl, the house was NASTY. Their house is not nasty. No, I do not think it’s right for anyone to harm anything. Including, animals, children or the elderly. I saw the Roosters, but I did not know he was fighting them. It’s wrong no matter how you look at it. Yes, as some people would say, “it’s just Roosters.” Well, they feel pain just like anything else, and no one has the right to make any animal suffer or be hurt. Up until yesterday, I was friendly with Patty and Terry. Wave as I drove by, sometimes, stop and talk, bought some things from them when they had a yard sale. I am confused right now, cause in my heart I still like Patty and Terry, but my head says “how could they do this. How could they make something suffer and like watching it.” Praying for all that are involved.

    I find it humorous that a lot of comments mention crack houses and rampant crime in Cottage Hill… I am there daily and what I see is a quaint, quiet area and you’d have to be a moron to rob or burglarize someone… I’m guessing the percentage of gun owners is 75% or better….if you wanna see bad neighborhoods check out Truman Arms or Lincoln Park or Mayfair or most of west Pensacola! Also mentioned is that one of Pensacola’s most prominent residents is known for cockfighting…Hmmmm…Wonder who they’re referring to??

  15. Chickens on the Shutters on April 28th, 2017 4:52 pm

    For goodness sake you can tell he is a proud cock fighter………..there are chickens on his house shutters!!!

  16. C on April 28th, 2017 4:14 pm

    What difference does it make if your house is clean or it looks nice or if it’s chickens or anything else they broke the lawand the officers did their job

  17. did any one notice on April 28th, 2017 3:57 pm

    Did anyone in the comments section actually notice that in the article it says they went out there to serve a WARRANT FOR NARCOTICS… “Escambia County deputies executed a search warrant at Jackson’s residence for narcotics and found cockfighting roosters, cockfighting paraphernalia, cockfighting trophies and pictures of roosters.” and found the other stuff. The ones that are up in arms about them going after them for the roosters… really is that all you read?
    My surprise was that Animal control actually showed up. The one time I got them to actually show up in my neighborhood, they told my neighbor I was the one to complain… which caused me to be harassed by those neighbors which caused us to have to continually call the cops out.
    Animal control in Escambia County Florida is just about useless! They also don’t bother to clean dead animals off the roadway, like they do in other states. Makes one wonder if they do anything other than hide all day.

  19. Kelli W on April 28th, 2017 2:50 pm

    How could someone be so cruel?! I mean, injecting roosters with hormones?! Who does that anymore? Surely not the chicken I buy from the grocery store!!

    On a side note, they better not mess with Mrs Jacksons Pyrex collection. Or if she needs someone to watch it all, I’m your girl!!

    How can we be so judge mental this man had chickens at his house did not get caught fighting any thing let’s sweep are on porch off before we judge anyone here but as a father it’s ok for the government two take my child are yous send them to some other country to fight not knowing if they will ever return alive but that’s ok I guess

  21. Citizen on April 28th, 2017 2:05 pm

    I am happy to see animal control breaking up these cockfighting and dog fighting rings. I don’t like to see the animals put into something in which they don’t have a choice in the matter.

    Next are they going to outlaw boxing or high school, college and NFL football because we all know no body wants to be entertained and bet on things that the participants may be hurt doing.

    NASCAR..waiting for the wreck..

    In history people loved watching the gladiators and bull fights…just saying..

    National Geographic…The Crocodiles grabbing the poor thirsty animals..yeah who watches that stuff.

  22. Cottage hill Resident on April 28th, 2017 1:47 pm

    I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 20 years I’ve dealt with all the thieves and I know for a fact that some of our neighborhood thieves live at this house or they hang out there. I know there was one boy who is wheelchair-bound in the lives of that house. Some of his buddies or relatives Drive the handicap van and can be seen creeping around the neighborhood late late at night but it is also well known as being our neighborhood thieves. I wish the sheriff’s department could get rid of some of the other scumbags in our neighborhood. There’s enough to keep him busy for a little while

  24. Charlotte on April 28th, 2017 1:37 pm

    Debbie, yes I do live in Cottage Hill. And yes, I do like these people. I don’t like, however, what was going on. Just like you, I have a right to write on here how I feel. And this is how I feel. These are good people doing something wrong. He who has not sinned may they cast the first stone. I was making a statement about them having a clean house, cause someone wondered if they had chickens inside the house. And just because they have cameras in front, does not mean everyone that puts them up is doing something wrong. I have cameras, but I don’t do drugs, nor do I sell them, I don’t harm animals, I have them up, because there are a few kids in this neighborhood that like to sneak in and steal what I’ve worked so hard to buy with my money. My neighbors have cameras and they aren’t selling drugs, or doing them. The few times that I have talked with Patty and Terry, they have been nice to me. Yes, I knew he had Roosters, but I did not know he was fighting them. I know people that have Pitt Bull dogs, but if they are fighting them, I certainly don’t know if they are or not. I still stand with my beliefs. I like these people, what I don’t like was what he was doing. So, more or less, I am on the fence here. Only one that has a right to make judgement here is God.

    11 roosters? 11 roosters? Sooooo he’s being prosecuted for Testosterone induced roosters? Maybe they were bodybuilding.

    Well…….what about the very prominent Pensacola residents who have the 100 or more fighting roosters in their backyards?

    Makes me wonder if Mr. Terry’s roosters beat up the wrong chicken :)

  29. 32 year resident of Cottage Hill on April 28th, 2017 12:47 pm

    I am in agreement with MargieLu, Cottage Hill residents would love for our neighborhood to be rid of all illegal activity. Our neighborhood is one filled with adults out jogging/walking, children riding their bicycles, people working in their yards, etc. Folks are just trying to make a safe home for their families, and the “thug” behavior associated with drugs and illegal activity is not welcome. We do have a reputation for not “being the nicest neighborhood” because of the undesired things happening here, and those of us wanting better for our kids desire this gone!

    If it were not for Sgt. Eddins. (formerly Sgt. Nowlin), Animal Control and ECSO would be lost in working dogfighting and cockfighting cases. She knows her stuff and she and the state attorneys office make the county shine when it comes to putting animal abusers behind bars. Great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Crime is crime no matter how you look at it. As for the people that think the police
    Should look the other way about certain crimes and let them slid bye I’m sure people that are sell dope, making meth and killing should just let there crimes slide bye all are wrong and everyone knows that. Again if you don’t think cockfighting is wrong and this man is a good man doing bad things.

  36. Debbie on April 28th, 2017 10:38 am

    Charlotte do you live here in Cottage Hill ? Just wondering cause you are quick to want to defend these folks. You did understand why the cops were there in the first place right ? You seem to think cause someone keeps a tidy house it is OK to torture animals and sell drugs. You do know drug dealers keep cameras around their house also right ? Did you believe everything they told you while you were eyeing the dishes? I don’t know if they are guilty or not on the drug thing but as someone who lives here I can tell you it is not the first time I have heard this about this house. If , please note I said IF, they are guilty I for one want them shut down in this neighborhood.

  37. Bewildered on April 28th, 2017 10:33 am

    Anyone who enjoys watching animals being tortured or is doing it himself is a dangerous individual – period! And Drug dealers have cameras because they need to protect their illicit merchandise and stacks of money. I wish he would not have gotten out on bond. Amazing that some lament because this “nice person” was targeted. Maybe they are the customers of this creep.

  38. Tonya Rolin on April 28th, 2017 10:22 am

  39. My2Cents on April 28th, 2017 10:12 am

    I agree with K. It doesn’t matter how much money they make or how clean the house is they were breaking the law. You can’t be lenient or justify one type of crime and condemn another. It’s wrong. They were wrong. They should pay their debt to society.

    What about the poor chickens? Everyone is up in arms over dog fighting but not chickens…Chicken lives matter too!

I’ve been to their home, not for Chicken fighting, but because the lady of the house collects Pyrex and I was looking at her collection. Her home is spotless. You could eat off the floors.
