Merry Christmas Y’all

December 12, 2010

Our redneck friends and neighbors in north Santa Rosa County celebrated Christmas with their annual Chumuckla Redneck Christmas Parade Saturday. An estimated 18,000 people attended the parade and BonfireJam with Rodney Atkins and Little Big Town.

Deer, camo, trucks and tractors were a common theme, along just good redneck fun.

Good grief – quit complaining, we’ll takem over here on the coast – anything that draws 1800 plus people out on a Saturday afternoon can’t be all that bad now can it?

As I said before I think the Redneck Parade is teriffic. I have always enjoyed going. This year however we purposely stayed away because of Bonfire Jam. We have experienced the bad traffic in the past and really didn’t feel the traffic would be any better with all the tickets from the concert sold. I never thought of al the beer and alochol that would be consumed. I do agree with Liza, her property is her property. She should not have to clean up her front yard after the parade because of irresponsible people. Agreed, most trucks and cars are parked on the county right-away. Still pick up your trash so no one else has to. It also might be a thought for the Parade Committee to take those golf carts and gators that they ride the parade route with and pick up after the slobs that left the mess. It would be the neighborly thing to do!

This is an annual event, and we never know how many people will show up. We decided to have the parade on Saturday because there are four churches in our area and this being an all day event would intrude on their services. I am very proud to be a part of this organization, I love to be able to shop for families and children that otherwise might not have a Christmas. There will be meeting in the future to try and make the event go a little smoother next year. I hope everyone had a great time. Merry Christmas!

I went to the parade with my kids. I don’t agree at all that it is a racist parade but i didn’t like all the drinking. My 8 year old had beer spilt all over him. It’s sad that you can’t take your kids to a family event without someone causing problems. However i am glad that it is for charity. Hats off to the people who donate their time to help disadvantage people. I just think that we can do without all the drinking. CHRISTmas is about Jesus you don’t expect to see drinking with that.

I really think they need to move the parade back to Sundays, to avoid the drama of alcohol.. To many people go hurt and the ones that drank trashed the area… I think the only reason that it got changed to saturday is for the county or who ever to make money on the beer at the Bonfire Jam.. I live in the area, actually near the school, and next year i will do my best and so will the others in the area to have it someplace else.. I do not pay taxes on my property to have some idiots trash my yard.. ..

    @Bamcubz

Thanks so much. That is really nice of to do that.

    @ River Rat

I took more pics, will look to see if I have some of the horses and post tonight.

  8. MM on December 13th, 2010 9:09 am

There would have been 18,002 but we got tied up in traffic. Man, I can’t believe I missed it. I was looking forward to going, but got a late start. The traffic was backup up 6 miles south of Chumuckla by 1pm. Is there any wide open spaces that can be opened up so the traffic can flow in and out easier next year?

  9. LULU on December 13th, 2010 8:23 am

I do wish the article would have pointed out the main purpose of the parade. To raise money for charity. How can anyone be against that? Surely not even an educatedsthrnwoman.

  10. River Rat on December 13th, 2010 8:04 am

I was unable to attend so thanks for the pictures. Wish there were some of the horses. Their owners work hard grooming them and putting ribbon and bow’s in their
    mane and tails.

  11. SICKOFMORONS on December 13th, 2010 7:59 am

OMG!!!!!!! I am so sick of the RACE CARD being thrown….this parade is nothing but a group of hard working people having fun and laughing with friends, not to mention charity for children. Why is it that Race is always an issue????? In this country EVERYONE has the chance to become educated, have religion, vote, and voice opinions…..If they choose not to take the opportunity to become educated, or vote or anything else this country offers that is a choice…NOT a racial ISSUE…..most people have moved forward in their lives, those who choose to think that everyone owes them something just because of their color………well it’s evident that they CHOSE not to move forward, become educated and enjoy life as it is today!!!!! Just sayin…..

  12. mal on December 13th, 2010 7:44 am

My husband and all the board members work very hard to pull this parade off. When you ask one of them why they do this year after year, they say for the children. They try to keep it clean, but then you get those few that have to make idiots out of themselves by drinking and getting drunk. I am PROUD of my husband and the board members!!!!!

To eduSouthernwoman: I do not know where in the South you were educated or if you even have Southern roots. Nowhere in this day of fun is there anything ‘racist’. You are guilty of lacking fundemantal knowledge when it comes to the Southern heritage segment. Sadly, you probably won’t try to learn what the difference is. In truth, the term “Redneck” goes back into the European culture and religion. How can you even attempt to make anyone believe this parade is “shameful and ignorant’ when you know not of what you speak. No one is defending slavery. It has no place in this or any other Southern Heritage event. In the time it existed, and while it still exist today, it was legal. We all know it was wrong. Those who wish to find fault with anything we in the South do that may relate to our own heritage always toss that ‘S’ word in. Get over it. No one wants to see it back. The honored Battle Flag will never be hidden away either. Learn something about it. It may surprise you. You also may wish to read the Emacipation Proclomation. The slaves in the North were NOT free when it was passed. If it offends you, do not go. Those who are involved in this are having no more than a day of fun. One thing we in the South will always retain is our sense of humor and our sense of self. If WE wish to poke fun and laugh about things, just don’t bother reading about it. We are not going to change because some people are closed minded and trying to explain will not change their opinion. If it bothers you that much, stay away, ignore it, don’t bother to comment on it. Your lack of ‘real’ history education is showing.

One thing most non rednecks dont understand is we don’t give a crap what “you guys” think about us

  15. Redneck SWF on December 12th, 2010 8:12 pm

@educatedsouthernwoman..I read your post..then decided I would look through the pictures you find so offensive myself…as you must not have attended the parade and bonfire jam…I did not see the words “the south will rise again” on any of the pictures on this website…However I believe if you watch the movie Wild Wild West with Will Smith (a BLACK MAN) and Kevin Kline…you might find those words in that movie…I too am a college educated white female and see nothing wrong with the Redneck Parade…the Rebel Flag and the Civil War is about heritage, pride, our growth as a nation…I am truly sorry you can’t understand that..if you do some googling, I believe you might find an article where the ACLU was going to fight NASCAR and defend the Southern People’s right to display the Rebel Flag at the Homestead Track during the last race of the season…And what other single event in this area other than a free Jimmy Buffet concert draws 18,000 people?

    Addendum:
Let’s not forget the real purpose of this event. This parade is held every year to help the disadvantaged children in our area, both black and white. And many thanks to Robbie Foster for his hard work and dedication in making it a fun time for all..he is a “true southern (and educated) gentleman”

  17. educatedsthrnwoman on December 12th, 2010 7:04 pm

    ProudArmyParent,

No satin pillow here, work 50 to 60 hours a week and have since I was 16. Never said all rednecks = racist, the context that redneck is being used is quite obviously (look @ the pictures) a stereotype of which I referred to in previous post. Still waiting for the explanation of the flags stating “The South Will Rise Again”. You grew up in the North, I grew up in the south and find the stereotype offensive. I work hard as did all my family before me, but none of us would ever think of portraying ourselves or our heritage as this event does. Any race can contain rednecks in the form of what you are talking about, but in the context of this parade I must say I didn’t see any pictues that would portray this as a multicultural event. I do agree parades can be a great time though :)

    To Educatesthrnwoman:
What makes you think that you are the only “educated southern woman” in the world and that those of us who participate in this annual event are not educated? Let me correct you Ms. Know-It-All….the majority of the most highly educated US citizens are from the deep south., most of them being country folk. (google this fact)! However, the majority of us are much more modest than you…we don’t go around flaunting and waving our degrees in the faces of others. Those of us who choose to live in the country are not stupid nor prejudiced. We celebrate “heritage” NOT HATE…it has nothing to do with being racist. It has to do with the olden days, back when life was simpler then..before some idiot thought of the term “politically correct or incorrect”. If I were to mention the names of doctors, lawyers, university professors, engineers architects, builders, and yes, even congressmen and senators who were born and raised within a 10 mile radius of Chumuckla, I would need at least 10 pages to list them. Why don’t you take your haughty little Miss Educated butt and stick it where the sun don’t shine. If you don’t like what you see, then turn the damned page!

  19. Really?? on December 12th, 2010 6:48 pm

@educatedsthrnwoman- it’s people like you who try to find the political incorrectness in every aspect of life that are the problem. If you bothered to really check into what you’re bashing, you would find that it’s just a good time. It’s not that serious. If you have such a problem with it then move somewhere where you don’t have to hear about it.

  20. bmr on December 12th, 2010 6:30 pm

what was wrong with the south before the civil war, it was rich and better than yankee land slavery would have taken care of itself when the tractor came in .

  21. ProudArmyParent on December 12th, 2010 5:39 pm

*****I’m sorry if you can’t get off your satin pillow and a laugh with the rest of us! Keep up the good work Chumuckla .

  22. ProudArmyParent on December 12th, 2010 5:35 pm

    educatedsthrnwoman,
I grew up in the north, I moved here almost 30 years ago. I find nothing wrong with people who can laugh at themselves and with others. If you were so educated you understand this. A Redneck is not a a racist, a redneck is a survior. One who works hard for all they have, one who strives for something more yet still has been beaten down and still gets back up and works harder. (Thus the “redneck” from the hot sun.) Any race can contain Rednecks. Finally, maybe what you don’t understand is that the parade is a good time. I time to kick back and have a laugh or two in these trying times. The parade also gives back to the community. During these hard times we need fun events we can look forward to, I’m sorry if you can’t get of your satin pillow and a laugh with the rest of us! Kept up the good work Chumuckla .

  23. yourVinceGill on December 12th, 2010 5:17 pm

how can my comment still be in moderation when you ley educated women go thru, a travesty.

  24. educatedsthrnwoman on December 12th, 2010 3:09 pm

If this racist event pronouncing “the south will rise again” represents the “backbone”of this country then we are in MUCH worse shape that anyone can possibly imagine. I personally as a white female raised in the south find this event to be offensive and embarrasing. The thought that this area continues to promote that all people from the south are toothless, inbred, rednecks who wish us back to a time of slavery and inhumane treatment of any race but white is shameful. It amazes me that anyone would choose to participate in such a distasteful display. Thats what I want people to think of when they consider bringing business and jobs to this area….The Chumuckla Redneck Christmas Parade???? Those who want to disagree please explain to me this…all those mud covered trucks displaying “the south will rise again” what else can that possibly be referring to BUT the return of the way things were before the civil war and the end of slavery. Give me a break! So shameful and ignorant to tie such a racist event to Christmas and our area. I’m sure this post won’t remain on here long. Sincerely…

Didn’t need to buy a ticket for the BonfireJam….hubby and I heard it loud and clear from our patio…. the music was great! The parade was great too…like Bamcubz said..it gets bigger and better each year! I googled Rodney Atkins and Little Big Town…their bio’s are a very interesting read! They sure woke up this sleepy little town in a big way last night!

@ MolinoGurl – This was the 18th annual parade which is usually held the second weekend in December yearly in Chumuckla. This is the first year they had the Bonfire and concert. Sounds like they were a success so I imagine they will have them next year too.

I have attended the parade off and on for the past 8 years now and the keep getting bigger and better.

NE ~ thanks for posting my pics.
Don’t know how many time have submitted some, never to see them used. :)

This is not the backbone of this country ! Would not wont to be called a REDNECK, just bad things come from it.

  30. Angi B. on December 12th, 2010 9:37 am

I wait every year for the redneck christmas parade, this one is a must see for sure. Loads of fun with alot of good country people. We were so proud to be a part of the parade this year, as passing through the thousands of people cheering on and the smiles on the childrens faces to get those stuffed animals, candy, beads etc… We hope to be a part of the parade next year as well…
    Merry Christmas To All…
