September 30, 2010

Nine students were injured when a school bus driven by a Century woman was rear-ended by a vehicle that fled the scene this morning in Pensacola.

The incident happened about 8:15 a.m. at Pine Forest Road and Longleaf Drive. The Florida Highway Patrol says the 1999 Escambia County school bus driven Cynthia Lambert, 54, of Century was struck in the rear by a late model sliver Chrysler four door sedan. The car left the scene traveling south on Pine Forest Road.

A total of nine students on the bus, which was headed to Pine Forest and West Florida high schools, were injured. Their injuries were considered minor. Lambert was not injured.

The accident is still under investigation by the FHP.

“All buses since 2002 have seat belts. The children are SUPPOSED to use them. You still see buses with numbers ending with 00, 00, 01 driving down the road. They usually do not have seat belts. Since it says she was driving a 99 bus, I imagine it had no seat belts.”

David I’m not sure when the last time you were in school or rode on a school bus but that is NOT true I graduated in 2007 and I have NEVER in my days rode on a bus with seat belts and as of today they still have no seat belts. At least all don’t.

“Whoa! And I thought I was cynical. Do buses have seat belts yet? The kids could have been hurt bad in a collision like that.”

A rear end collision would drive children back into their cushioned seats and do little if any harm. If they were thrown forward and sitting properly, they would strike the cushioned seats in front of them and do little if any harm. About the only time seat belts actually reduce injuries is when the bus turns over.

    To “SW” and “old trooper”

Whoa! And I thought I was cynical. Do buses have seat belts yet? The kids could have been hurt bad in a collision like that.

    Old Trooper,

It ain’t just bus wrecks; it is any wreck where no one’s hurt until the wagon shows up.

    You know the deal.

As I understand this incident, a sedan struck the rear of a school bus and left the scene. I was not there, although, I have been to several incidents similar to this. Usually you ask the school bus driver are there any injuries. The answer is normally, ” not yet.” At the first complaint of injury, the theatrics start. Mass
disaster rules. Ambulances (plural) are dispatched. Neck injuries and attorneys, life flight should have been called. The kids have been taught well.

    Kevin:

If you were concerned about the kids,I doubt you are anything like the scmbag who left the scene. They only care about getting away.

If I had warrants, no liscense, no insurance, and a truck full of dope, I could not have left the scene, I would have been more concerned about those children that the trouble that I might get in. I sure hope that they find this person.

Wow, I hope all the kids are ok.

Sounds like a no insurance,no valid license or outstanding warrant situation.
