Ernest Ward Eagles Fall To Atmore (With Photo Gallery)

The Eagles of Escambia County Middle School defeated the Eagles of Ernest Ward 52-0 Tuesday night in Walnut Hill.
For the Ernest Ward Eagles, it was a special homecoming night event. Before the game, eighth grade football players, cheerleaders and band members were honored. Past homecoming queens were recognized on the field at halftime (pictured below).

Dirt Cheap Closing All Stores After Filing Bankruptcy

Discount retailer Dirt Cheap is closing all stores, including those in Pensacola and Atmore after the company filed for bankruptcy.
Channel Control Merchants, which is the parent company of Dirt Cheap, Treasure Hunt and Dirt Cheap Building Supplies will close all its 68 stores that span eight states, including Florida and Alabama.
In the North Escambia area, Dirt Cheap had stores in Atmore, and in Pensacola on Davis Highway and Fairfield Drive.
Liquidation sales are already underway at all locations. Finial store closing dates have not been announced.
According to their website, Dirt Cheap is “an extreme value retailer giving major brand customer returns and excess inventory a second chance”. The company said Dirt Cheap became the largest buyer of insurance claims in the United States, while also adding manufacturer and retailer buybacks, closeouts, bankruptcies, overstocks, liquidations, customer returns, and out of season goods.

Jay Defeats Northview 3-1 In District Semifinal Match

In FHSAA Rural District 1 volleyball semifinals Tuesday, the top seed Jay Royals defeated the Northview Chiefs 3-1.
Northview took the first set 25-20, but Jay responded to win the following three sets, winning 25-13, 25-15, and 25-11.
In another semifinal match, Baker blanked Central 3-0. Baker won 25-12, 25-15, 25-5.
The Royals will advance to the district finals against Baker Thursday night in Baker.

Cantonment Trio Charged With Stealing AT&T Phone Cable Serving Up To 900 Customers

Three Cantonment residents have been charged in connection with the theft of large phone cable from Jernigan Road that served hundreds of AT&T customers.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office filed felony grand theft and felony criminal mischiefs against 44-year-old Chadwick Clay Dixon, 34-year old Joshua Glenn Mobley, and 35-year-old Brittany Nicole White.
Investigators said the trio was responsible for cutting down and stealing about 500 feet of phone cable from utility poles on Jernigan Road just south of Nine Mile Road. AT&T told deputies that the phone cable, about 2.5 inches in diameter, contained 900 pairs of phone lines. The value of the wire was estimated at $8,000, plus about $2,200 in costs to replace.
Dixon was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $10,000 bond. Mobley remained in jail with bond set at $10,000, while White was held on a $5,000 bond.
Firefighters Prevent Pickup Fire From Spreading To Nearby Home

Escambia County Fire Rescue recently saved a nearby home from severe damage as a pickup truck burned nearby.
The Molino, Cantonment and McDavid stations of ECFR responded to the fire midday Saturday in the 1300 block of Barth Road. They arrived to find the pickup truck fully involved just a few feet from the home. Firefighters worked to extinguish the vehicle fire while preventing the flames from reaching the home.
The truck was a total loss. An investigation determined the fire was caused by an “unspecified malfunction” in the truck.

Grand Opening Held For Pump Hair Studio, Century’s Newest Business

A ribbon cutting was held Monday afternoon for a new hair salon in Century, the first ribbon cutting for a new business in the town in quite some time.
Pump Hair Studio is located at 8351 North Century Boulevard, next door to CVS.
Owner Tabitha Schoonover said he is proud to be part of the Century community as she opens.
“I grew up in Century, and I hate to see a lot of these buildings closed down,” Schoonover said after the ribbon cutting. “So, I said from the beginning that if I ever open up anything, it will be in Century. I want our town to be better.”
With about seven years’ experience, she is a graduate of George Stone Technical College. She has worked at Fantastic Sams, Ulta Beauty and on her own. She is license master in Redken hair color and others.
Eyelash artist Misty Gafford is also located inside the studio.

Northview Beats Laurel Hill In Three Sets In Volleyball Rural District 1 Quarterfinal

The Northview Chiefs beat the Laurel Hill Hoboes in three straight sets Monday in the quarterfinals of the FHSAA Rural District 1 volleyball tournament.
Northview won by scores of 25-15, 25-19, 25-8.
No. 4 seed Northview will face No. 1 seed Jay at 4 p.m. Tuesday in semifinal action as No. 2 Baker plays No. 3 Central at 6 p.m. The semifinal games are all at Baker High School. The championship game is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Baker.

Tate Aggies Fall To Pace In District Tournament Volleyball Opener

The No. 5 Tate Aggies fell to the No. 4 Pace Patriots 3-0 Monday night in Pace during the quarterfinals of the FHSAA 6A District 1 volleyball tournament.
Pace won by scores of 25-16, 25-21, 25-16.
Pace will face No. 1 seed Gulf Breeze in Gulf Breeze Tuesday.
The season ended for the Aggies at 14-10.

Escambia County Jail Inmate To Be Charged With Beating Death Of Fellow Inmate

An Escambia County Jail inmate will be charged with the beating death of a fellow inmate, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators say 36-year-old Jorge Luis Velasquez beat 42-year-old Kevin Tavall Johnson as they were in the same cell. Velasquez was charged with aggravated battery, while Johnson was hospitalized for treatment. Deputies were notified Saturday that Johnson had passed away from his injuries.
Jail records show Velasquez was first arrested on October 3 for trespassing, damaging property and resisting arrest. He was then charged with aggravated battery on a jail detainee, which is expected to be upgraded. He was also wanted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He is being held without bond.
Johnson was arrested in March on larceny and drug charges, according to jail records.
Woman Charged After Chasing Kids With A Knife At Cantonment Birthday Party, ECSO Says

A woman was charged after allegedly chasing kids around with a knife and cutting one of them at what was described as a children’s birthday party late Sunday night in Cantonment.
Lisa Marie Bryant, 44, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated felony child abuse.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said Bryant became irate at the birthday party on Irene Lane off Taylor Street about 11:19 p.m. Sunday and started to chase people.
Deputies said a 17-year-old was cut on the hand during the incident. The small laceration was not considered severe.
Bryant remained in the Escambia County Jail without bond. No further details about what led to the incident have been released.
