State Revenue In Florida Just Under Forecast

State general revenue collections for July came in slightly below expectations.

The Legislature’s Office of Economic & Demographic Research reported Wednesday the state collected $3.68 billion in net general revenue in July, $16.3 million under the amount projected in a revenue forecast set in January.

The panel of economists known as the Revenue Estimating Conference increased state general revenue projections by nearly $1 billion on Aug. 14. The amount is considered relatively minor as Florida annually takes in about $50 billion in general revenue.

The revised figures will be used starting with the August revenue collection report, according to the legislative office report.

General revenue is closely watched because it plays a major role in funding education, health and prison programs.

The July report showed sales tax, which makes up the bulk of the revenue, accounted for $3.2 billion, $166.8 million more than anticipated. Corporate income taxes totaled $199.2 million, which was $48 million over the forecast.

Earnings on state investments totaled $114.1 million, $7 million more than expected.

Meanwhile, revenue from documentary stamp taxes on real estate transactions came in at $53.6 million or $14.8 million below the forecast.

The beverage tax also fell short of the forecast, totaling $20.7 million for the month, $2.1 million less than anticipated.
