Betty Jane Salter

Betty Jane Salter, 94, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away September 25, 2026. She was born in Oneonta, Alabama, on August 5, 1932, to Emma and Barnett Hendricks. She was married to the love of her life James Edward Salter for 74 years.

Betty was passionate about living a life a service, which was modeled to her by her late aunt Lillie Hendricks. She volunteered at Habitat for Humanity in 1981 and served as an unpaid Executive Director for many years. She then moved to serving on the board as Emeritus Director. She taught sewing classes for Singer. Betty also served on the board of directors at the Haven, Our Lady of Peace. She was an active member at St. Luke United Methodist Church. Betty also volunteered at the West Florida Library, Dyehouse Bookstore.

When Betty wasn’t volunteering and serving her community. She was an avid reader, baker, and gardener. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Barnett and Emma Hendricks, her brother B.D. Hendricks, her daughter Jane Wheat, and the love of her life, her husband James Salter.

She is survived by her daughter Gail (David) Ewing and son-in-law Don Wheat. Her grandchildren are James (Ashley) Wheat, Joy (Jim) Baker, Nathan (Ruth Janna) Wheat, Ruth Lang, Tally (Roger) Hawthorne, Jamie (Devin) Reed, Anderson Ewing, Kelly (Thomas) Derbes. Her great grandchildren are Anna and Isaac Wheat; Lily, Emily, Macy, Kingston, and Kathryn Baker; John Sinclair, Janna Rose, Ian, Caelia Wheat; Benjamin, Jillian, Samuel, and Vivienne Lang; Buck, Rory, and Hank Hawthorne; and Robert Matthew, Baylee and Colby Reed. Her sisters are Faye Cook, Jean Johnson and her sister-in-law Viriginia Hendricks.

The family would like to thank Wendy Baxter from Vitas Hospice Care and Brookdale Senior Living for their wonderful care and love for Betty.

The family will have a private ceremony at a later date and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church and Habitat for Humanity.
