Quintette Fire Is Sixth Bulb In ‘Keep The Wreath Green’ Fire Safety Wreath
December 7, 2021
The are now six red bulbs on Escambia County Fire Rescue’s “Keep the Wreath” fire safety wreath following a fire Monday in the Quintette community.
Fire heavily damaged the double wide mobile home on St. Matthews Lane, leaving the residents without a home. [Click here for more information.]
We first reported Tuesday morning that this was the fifth red bulb, but Escambia Fire Rescue later determined that another Cantonment fire last Friday will be counted as a red bulb. The fire destroyed a large shed that was being used as a residence and was not originally counted as a red bulb.
During the month-long Keep the Wreath Green campaign, five-foot wreaths are on display at county fire stations and other locations. Each time firefighters respond to a residential fire with damage, a green light bulb is replaced with a red one to remind citizens of the dangers posed by fires in residential homes.

K-9 Cook is named after Deputy Don Cook who was killed in a 1988 crash after learning of a high speed pursuit of armed robbers headed into Escambia County from Santa Rosa County. Cook responded to I-10 where he set up a roadblock in the west bound lane between the off ramp to Highway 29 and the I -10 spur near the railroad trestle. Cook exited his vehicle and the pursuit continued toward the roadblock where he was struck and killed. The suspect were taken into custody several miles away after their vehicle was disabled. Cook was a five-year veteran of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
K-9 Streeter is named after Cpl. Eric Streeter, who was shot and killed in 1984 as he followed to escapees from the county jail. He was waiting for backup when the suspects stopped, got out of their vehicle and opened fire. He had been with the ECSO for eight years. Street’s son later became a Florida Highway Patrol trooper.

December 7, 2021
The latest extrication tool has been donated to the Flomaton Fire Department.
CSX Transportation and Escambia County (AL) District 3 Commissioner Scottie Stewart donated the funds to purchase a TNT Rescue Storm Surge combination cutter and spreader tool.
Stewart has worked for CSX for 21 years. After learning from Chief Steve Stanton that the Flomaton Fire Department’s equipment needed to be upgraded, Stewart went to work to secure the CSX donation.
Flomaton is the first fire department in Alabama to own the latest Storm Surge extrication equipment. The equipment is primarily used to extricate vehicle crash victims, but has other life-saving rescue applications.
The donation will also benefit surrounding communities where the Flomaton Fire Department responds to provide mutual aid, including North Escambia.
