Man Charged In Two Cottage Hill Shots Fired Incidents; Photo Shows Bullet Hole In Victim’s Truck

July 14, 2019

[UPDATED DETAILS] At least one shot was fired from inside a pickup truck early Saturday morning in Cottage Hill in one of two shots fired disturbances that ended with one arrest.

James Peter Tipton, 38, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, firing a weapon in public or on residential property, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, armed burglary, and two counts of criminal mischief with property damage. He remained in the Escambia County Jail Sunday morning with bond set at $96,000.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 1800 block of Williams Ditch Road about 4 a.m. The victim reported that as he exited his vehicle someone driving a dark colored SUV fired two shots at him, according to Sgt. Melanie Peterson.

About 7 a.m. deputies responded to another shots fired disturbance a short distance away in the 1400 block of Highway 95A. Tipton’s uncle reported that Tipton drove into his yard and entered his garage. The uncle observed Tipton removing guns from his SUV and placing them into the bed of the uncle’s truck, Peterson said. The victim also stated that Tipton fired two shots from a rifle into the woods.

A photo obtained NorthEscambia.com shows a bullet hole in the driver’s door of the reported victim’s pickup.

Tipton was taken into custody without incident. There were no injuries reported.

Prayers for the family as they navigate this difficult journey with James. The wreck and resulting serious injuries he sustained have altered his life. Support is essential for the physical, emotional and spiritual healing that they need. Thank you Becky for reminding us of that.

It’s so sad. James was a good guy but when he had that auto wreck. Which was not his fault and got nothing from it except pain. He was prescribed meds then they stopgiving him medication that he has been addicted to now he has to reach out for help and unfortunately he didn’t reach out to the right person James I’m praying for you and I pray that you will see the Lord and ask him to come into your heart and get off of this prescribing and prescribed medication God bless you sweetie.

Seems like violent crime has been going up in Escambia County over the last decade.

Jamie, what has happened to you is a tragedy ,I remember the little boy who was always eager to help no matter what the task, here is the chance to regain and repent ,I am glad nobody was hurt,if you will turn to the Lord and let him heal you, there is a chance that you could live a quality life but you must pay your debt to society, I am praying for you.

This is sad. He had a proper upbringing. His folks are good people. His Father was a really good man. James was always a little bit of a hot head. This is what Drugs can do to you. Thankfully no one was hurt.
The Justice System will take care of him now. If they give him enough time maybe he will be cured of his Demons. If he is lucky enough, he may find Jesus while in jail. If it is the Lords will, My he be SAVED.

What a stupid act of violence. Then tries to cover it up.

Dude, you need to stay in jail and never see the green grass of home ever again.

Oh yeah, drugs and alcohol addiction does this to people.

Starting to fill like Cantonment and Cottage Hill is a haven for criminals. It.s at the point I’m embarrassed to say I live in Cantonment. Please ECSD, FWC, I would love to see you hammer down on the thugs of Cantonment .

Somebody made him mad. Tipton is lucky his shots didn’t hit anyone. Then trying to cover it up by placing the guns in his Uncle’s truck.

But a few posters on here will comment “He’s such a good boy”.

It’s sad that children put their parents through situations as this. In this case, his mother.
