Escambia County Honors Longtime Firefighter KC Fehl

April 25, 2015

The Escambia County Commission has issued a proclamation in honor of longtime volunteer fireman K.C. Fehl upon his retirement.

Fehl retired from Escambia County Fire Rescue on April 1 after 28 years of service. He joined the Cantonment Volunteer Fire Department in January 1987 after his interest in fire service was sparked by a neighbor’s yard fire. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in late 1990 and then soon reached the rank captain.

He left the Cantonment VFD for a short time to serve with the Molino Volunteer Fire Department before returning to Cantonment.

Fehl left the fire department in 2003 to start his service as an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office reserve deputy where he served until 2010. He moved to the Cantonment VFD’s board of directors so he could spend more time with his son by coaching his baseball team. In December 2005, he switched to “line duty” with the VFD as a driver with his son Kenny, who is now a career firefighter. Fehl was soon, once again, promoted to lieutenant and then to assistant chief. He also served the Ferry Pass fire district for just over a year.

“With his retirement, Escambia County has lost an invaluable resource that will be impossible to replace,” the county’s proclamation stated.

Commissioners congratulated Fehl, and his wife, Susan Fehl, for their years of service.

I will always be thankful for KC. March 25, 2009 my mama had a heart attack at my job and was unconscious for 45 minutes. They tried the defibrillator 2 times. On the way to the hospital the paramedics tried once again and it worked. KC had one of his guys drive him to the hospital where he was waiting for me to get there. When I got there he let me know God wasn’t ready for my mama and has bigger plans for her. I dropped to my knees thanking KC and mostly God and him and the other 2 men prayed with me. KC this retirement is well deserved for an amazing person and more than that my mamas hero.

KC, it’s about time you took some time for you and your family. I’ve seen you when you’ve been up all night running calls for the Station and then turn around and go back to work at the Plant. I’ve never seen nor heard of you refusing to lend a helping hand to anyone. You raised a fine son and found a much needed wife to enjoy life with. While is saddens me to see you retire, I’m happy to see you’ll be able to enjoy your off time now. I still remember you and I sitting in my patrol car trying to catch a guy with a warrant and me covering my badge with my hand when a car drove past us as if no one was going to see us in the marked patrol car. I guess you won’t be waking me up in your yard any more either. The things we do early on in our careers. Tell Kenny Paul and the wife we said hello and as always, give us a call if we can do anything for you all. Mike Amerson
