October 6, 2026
An Escambia County man has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for submitting fraudulent loan applications to local credit unions to purchase luxury vehicles and a boat.
Shawn Steele, 52, was sentenced in federal court for making false statements to federally insured financial institutions, according to United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida John P. Heekin.
Federal prosecutors said that between March 7, 2023, and June 30, 2023, Steele obtained loans from Pen Air Credit Union and Central Credit Union of Florida to finance a Jeep Wrangler, a Ferrari 488 Pista, and a Cape Horn boat.
According to court records, Steele submitted fake pay stubs and false financial information on the applications to deceive the institutions into approving the financing. Based on those misrepresentations, he was granted loans totaling $98,120.07, $250,000, and $299,243.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation.
