Breaks Go Biscuits’ Way As Wahoos Lose 7-2
August 9, 2025
written by Erik Bremer
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos dropped their fourth game in a row to the Montgomery Biscuits on Friday night, falling by a 7-2 final.
The game started in a promising fashion for the Blue Wahoos, who tagged Biscuits ace Brody Hopkins (W, 5-7) with two first-inning runs. With two on and two out, Cody Morissette hit a shallow fly to left field that was initially ruled a sliding catch by Noah Myers before being overturned as a two-run single.
Staked to a 2-0 lead, Blue Wahoos starter Orlando Ortiz-Mayr (L, 6-6) surrendered a run to Montgomery in the bottom of the first. Colton Ledbetter led off with a single, was balked to second, and scored on a Cooper Kinney groundout to get the Biscuits on the board.
The 2-1 lead held until the bottom of the third, when the Biscuits scored six runs on only three hits. Homer Bush tied the game with an RBI infield single and Brayden Taylor gave the Biscuits a 3-2 lead with a two-out, bases-loaded walk. Tatem Levins then blasted a deep drive to right-center field that took an unusual bounce off the wall, caroming away from Blue Wahoos center fielder Colby Shade. By the time the ball was relayed home, Levins had circled the bases for a rare inside-the-park grand slam that put the Biscuits ahead 7-2.
The Pensacola bullpen, comprised of Jesse Bergin, Josh Ekness and Nigel Belgrave, combined for 4.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball. But the Montgomery relievers were equally effective, keeping the Blue Wahoos off the scoreboard and handing the Biscuits their fourth win in a row.
With the series win, the Biscuits have clinched a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Blue Wahoos. Pensacola’s lead in the division race is now only 2.5 games.
The Blue Wahoos continue their series against the Biscuits on Saturday.
BOCC Approves $20K For Tate Baseball Field Artificial Turf Following Previous Northview Allocation
August 8, 2025
The Escambia County Commission is allocating $20,000 to the county school board for artificial turf infrastructure for the Tate High School Aggies baseball field. This funding will be provided through an interlocal agreement between the Board of County Commissioners and the school board.
The commission made an identical $20,000 allocation in October 2024 for the Northview High School Chiefs baseball field, and the turf was completed for the start of the 2025 baseball season (pictured above).
The commission approved both allocations from Commissioner Steven Barry’s District 5 Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) discretionary fund.

Blue Wahoos Bettered B Biscuits In Doubleheader Sweep
August 8, 2025
written by Erik Bremer
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos were swept in a doubleheader by the Montgomery Biscuits on Thursday night, falling 2-1 in game one before dropping the nightcap by a 7-0 final.
Game one was a duel between Biscuits starter Jonny Cuevas and Blue Wahoos starter Dax Fulton (L, 5-8). Cuevas, the first man up in a scheduled bullpen game, allowed only two walks over 4.0 hitless innings as Fulton allowed only two balls hit out of the infield in his first 5.0 innings.
The Blue Wahoos broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth, turning a Fenwick Trimble double and Kemp Alderman double play grounder into a 1-0 lead against Biscuits reliever Ryan Shreve (W, 3-3).
Fulton, asked to protect the lead, allowed one-out singles to Homer Bush Jr. and Jadher Areinamo before Cooper Kinney blasted a go-ahead, two-run double off the top of the right field wall.
Though Will Kempner left two of Fulton’s runners in scoring position to avoid further damage, the Pensacola offense couldn’t muster a rally against Derrick Edington (S, 7) in their final chance to avoid a 2-1, seven-inning defeat.
In game two, TJ Nichols (W, 1-0) impressed in his Double-A debut for the Biscuits. The righty worked 6.0 scoreless innings, coaxing four double plays, in support of a Montgomery offensive outburst.
Bush circled the bases with a single, two steals and a throwing error for a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Jake Brooks (L, 0-1). Tatem Levins laced a two-run single in the fourth for a 3-0 Biscuits lead, and singles from Cooper Kinney and Gregory Barrios highlighted a four-run fifth that put the game out of reach for a 7-0 final.
The Biscuits were 11-for-11 in stolen bases on the doubleheader, highlighted by Bush’s six steals in a 5-for-7 evening.
In taking the first three games of this week’s series, the Biscuits have trimmed their deficit in the second half South Division race to 3.5 games behind the first-place Blue Wahoos.
The Blue Wahoos continue their series against the Biscuits on Friday.
Wahoos Fall 11-5 To The Montgomery Biscuits
August 7, 2025
written by Erik Bremer
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos welcomed a host of new arrivals to their roster on Wednesday, but saw their five-game winning streak come to an end with an 11-5 loss to the Montgomery Biscuits.
After six players were added to Pensacola’s roster on Tuesday in advance of a game that was postponed, four made their Double-A debuts in the series opener. Eric Rataczak was 1-for-3 with an RBI double, Payton Green was 1-for-3 with a stolen base, Colby Shade was 1-for-4 with a double, and Colby Martin struck out a pair in a 1-2-3 debut relief inning.
The Biscuits jumped ahead 3-0 in the first, bringing home Colton Ledbetter on a catcher throwing error and scoring two more on a Tatem Levins double.
The Blue Wahoos chipped away at the deficit, scoring a run in the third inning on Rataczak’s RBI double and another in the top of the fourth when Fenwick Trimble doubled and scored on an errant throw on Green’s steal of second.
Pensacola starter Alex Williams (L, 3-2) ran into trouble in the fourth, facing five batters without recording an out before being lifted. Two-run singles from Homer Bush Jr. and Jadher Areinamo were followed by a Will Simpson two-run double, adding up to a six-run inning and a 9-2 Biscuits lead.
That would be more than enough for Montgomery starter Ty Cummings (W, 5-2), who worked 6.2 innings of three-run ball. Michael Snyder laced an RBI single, his third hit of the game, to give the Blue Wahoos a run back in the seventh, but a promising rally in the eighth yielded only two runs as the Biscuits bullpen successfully protected the comfortable lead for an 11-5 final.
The Blue Wahoos continue their series against the Biscuits on Thursday with a doubleheader, making up Tuesday’s rainout with a pair of seven-inning games.

Wahoos Win Fifth Straight In Rainy Season Finale
August 4, 2025
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos picked up their fifth win in a row Sunday afternoon, defeating the Biloxi Shuckers 8-4 in a rainy series finale.
After an 87-minute rain delay, the Blue Wahoos bats unleashed a barrage of runs in the first four innings. Kemp Alderman led the way with a 4-for-4 day, including two home runs, a double and five RBI in the win.
“We’re just seeing it big and trying to hit the ball hard,” Alderman said. “Swing at strikes, take the balls and score runs.”
The Ole Miss product got things going early, pulling a no-doubt, two-run homer out to left in the bottom of the first off of Biloxi’s KC Hunt (L, 6-7).
Josh Zamora added to the lead in the second with a two-run home run to left of his own in the second inning. The home run was Zamora’s eighth of the year and marked the team’s fourth of the series.
Alderman’s second home run came in the third, on a high fly ball down the right field line, just barely getting over the wall.
“[I’m] just trying to keep it simple and play the game like a kid,” Alderman said. “Have fun and try to do good, and help the team win.”
Biloxi’s offense pushed across a run quickly in the first thanks to a Blake Burke RBI single to left, scoring pinch-runner Adam Hall. The Shuckers added two more in the third, as Garrett Spain and Jheremy Vargas each picked up RBI groundouts after having runners on second and third with no outs.
The Wahoos found three more runs in the fourth. After a Jared Serna single up the middle to drive in Michael Snyder, Alderman unleashed a double off the wall in left-center to drive in two.
Biloxi added one in the fifth on a wild pitch by left-hander Justin King, allowing Ethan Murray to score from third.
Jacob Miller (W, 3-4) earned the win for the Blue Wahoos after tossing 5.0 innings of three-run ball, including three strikeouts.
Evan Fitterer notched his 259th career strikeout in a Blue Wahoos uniform in the seventh inning, setting a new franchise record for career strikeouts after tying the record of 258 on Wednesday.
The Wahoos bullpen continued its dominance on Sunday. King, Fitterer, Will Kempner and Josh Ekness combined for 4.0 innings of one-run relief to secure the Blue Wahoos’ fifth straight win.
“[We’re] just going out there and playing clean, good baseball, sticking together as a group and playing until the final out,” Alderman said.
With six weeks left in the regular season, the Blue Wahoos lead the race for the Southern League South second-half title over the Montgomery Biscuits by 6.5 games.
The Blue Wahoos will hit the road to take on the Biscuits for a six-game set next week, beginning on Tuesday. First pitch from Montgomery will be at 6:35 CT, as Alex Williams (3-1, 2.55 ERA) takes the mound for the Blue Wahoos.
White Continues Strikeout Binge, Wahoos Win Fourth Straight
August 3, 2025

Blue Wahoos’ top-rated prospect Thomas White came within one pitch – his 99th of the night — from earning his first Double-A level victory.
But the team result turned out well.
White, the 20-year-old lefthander with a glowing future, again overcame a rocky third inning in his third home start, then worked into the fifth to help Pensacola produce a 4-2 victory against the Biloxi Shuckers, amid the backdrop of the normal Fireworks Saturday capacity crowd (5,038) at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
With two outs in the fifth, White threw a two-strike pitch that was called a ball – the Blue Wahoos dugout disagreed – leading to Biloxi’s Darrien Miller lacing a single on White’s next offering. That 100th pitch, by far the most White has thrown in his professional career, ended his night one out short of qualifying for the win.
But Luis Palacios again followed with stellar relief, earning his third win with 2.1 shutout innings and no hits allowed.
“I feel like I executed pretty well,” said White, the Miami Marlins’ No. 1 rated prospect, No. 22 rated across all levels of Minor League Baseball by MLB Pipeline.
A week after striking out 14 of 17 batters he faced in a no-decision on the road against the Knoxville Smokies, White had seven strikeouts Saturday with two walks and six hits allowed.
His performance was defined by how he got through the third inning. After giving up a leadoff double, then a flyout, the next four Shuckers batters reached base. Three consecutive singles plated a pair of runs and cut the Blue Wahoos lead to 3-2.
With the bases loaded, White got a pair of flyouts to end the inning, enabling him to make his longest home start. He worked through the fourth and fifth without damage. He finished with an impressive 71 strikes in 100 pitches thrown.
“Just to attack the hitters and let the defense go to work,” said White, reflecting on his outing in a post-game, on field interview for the crowd. “Respect how good (Biloxi hitters) are, but let that (his pitching repertoire) stuff play.
“(Double-A hitters) are definitely more patient. But as long as I fill up the zone, I am pretty confident it will turn out pretty good for me.”
The win clinched the series against the Shuckers, winners of the first half Southern League divisional race, plus extended the Blue Wahoos (20-11, 54-46 overall) second-half lead as the series concludes Sunday.
As for the Blue Wahoos, this continues their strong second half. With 38 games remaining, they have not dropped a series and have won the past three.
“Momentum,” said White, speaking on what winning the homestand does. “Just carry it week to week and letting the team stack good days and keeping it up as best you can.”
The Blue Wahoos produced a 3-run rally for White in the second inning. Josh Zamora’s one-out single was followed by Tony Bullard’s double to put runners on second and third. Mark Coley II followed with a two-run single, then newcomer catcher Connor Caskenette singled home the third run.
The Blue Wahoos added a run in the seventh when Coley II stole third and scored on a throwing error. The Blue Wahoos bullpen ran their record to 41-1 when leading after seven innings. Palacios was followed by Nigel Belgrave, who earned his third save by pitching the final two innings without allowing a hit and striking out two.
Ortiz-Mayr Twirls Gem, Wahoos Win 1-0 Duel
August 2, 2025
Of the feats attained by the Blue Wahoos pitching staff, one lacking element this season was getting a 1-0 win at home.
Add that now to the sparkle list.
After getting a season-best start from Orlando Ortiz-Mayr, who worked into the seventh inning for the first time this year, relievers Will Kempner and Austin Roberts finished off a crisply-played, five-hit shutout Friday night against the Biloxi Shuckers to delight a crowd of 4,554 at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
The Blue Wahoos remained unbeaten (38-0) when leading after eight innings this season. This includes a 1-0 shutout win on the road at Columbus on July 10.
“My sweeper was really good (Friday), I was landing it into the (strike) zone a lot,” said Ortiz-Mayr, during the on-field, post-game interview. “Just getting two strikes as quick as possible and trusting my defense.”
When Ortiz-Mayr exited in the seventh, the Shuckers had runners on first and third with one out. Kempner then induced Shuckers second baseman Jheremy Vargas to hit a grounder that shortstop Johnny Olmstead and second baseman Cody Morissette deftly turned into an inning-ending double-play.
When the twin-killing was completed to first baseman Nathan Martorella, the crowd roared, knowing it was a game-defining moment.
“That was as cool as it gets,” Ortiz-Mayr said, before his catcher Spencer Bramwell doused him with an ice bucket. “Shout out to Kempner making great pitches. Shout out to Johnny, Morissette and Marty for getting the play done. That was awesome. Can’t thank them enough.”
In earning his sixth win, Ortiz-Mayr struck out eight, one shy of a career high, and allowed just one walk around the five hits allowed. He retired nine consecutive batters after a one-out single in the fourth to help his outing.
The Blue Wahoos got the game’s only run in their first at-bat.
Morissette reached on a one-out walk. Kemp Alderman and Martorella then followed with walks to load the bases. Fenwick Trimble hit a fly ball to center, deep enough to score Morissette.
And that was it for the scoring. The Blue Wahoos had two runners on with less than two out in the sixth and eighth inning, but the Shuckers bullpen held the game to a 1-0 score.
Kempner (1.2 innings) and Roberts finished the shutout by not allowing a hit and only one base runner in the final three innings.
It gave the Blue Wahoos (53-46 overall, 20-11 in second half) a third consecutive win in this series. Their top pitcher, Thomas White, the Miami Marlins’ No. 1 prospect, who wowed with a 14-strikeout performance in his last start, will take the mound Saturday in a marquee game featured for free on MiLB.TV.
GAME NOTABLES
— Former Blue Wahoos outfielder Jakob Marsee made his Major League Baseball debut Friday night for the Miami Marlins as the starting centerfielder, batting ninth. His debut Friday night came complete with his first MLB hit.
Marsee joined the Blue Wahoos in May 2024, following a trade with the San Diego Padres that featured Luis Arraez, who played for the Blue Wahoos in 2019. Marsee played 91 games last year for the Blue Wahoos, but struggled at the plate.
This season, however, he’s been strong in Triple-A with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, smashing 14 homers, stealing 47 bases and driving in 37 runs in 98 games. Marsee is now the 149th player from the Blue Wahoos’ all-time roster to make an MLB debut.
— Four members of the current Blue Wahoos roster – catchers Spencer Bramwell and Connor Caskenette, along with infielder Tony Bullard and pitcher Ike Buxton – joined with retired players Tim Spooneybarger, Kevin Saucier and Adron Chambers on Friday morning for the second annual Blue Wahoos Baseball Camp.
Youth boys and girls, ages 5-12, received a colorful pink T-shirt, lunch and instruction from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.. The second day of the camp will be Saturday at the same time. Parents were able to see their kids on the field at Blue Wahoos Stadium receiving tips and conversing with the instructors, along with Blue Wahoos front office staff members.
— The first 1,000 fans received a back-to-school kit pouch in Blue Wahoos colors. It contained pencils, a ruler and eraser with room for other supplies.
— The game was designated as Coast Guard Day with a 250-member contingent gathered in one section. They were part of 13 groups in attendance Friday night. The groups also included a bachelor party outing, employees from the Waterfront Rescue Mission and a Baldwin County (Ala.) government agency.

Wahoos Score Early, Beat Biloxi 9-3
August 1, 2025
written by Willie Phaler
In a potential preview of the Southern League South Divisional playoff series, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos won their second in a row over the Biloxi Shuckers in a 9-3 rout Thursday night.
Centerfielder Fenwick Trimble led the way for the Blue Wahoos, picking up his first three-hit night in Double-A along with two RBI and two runs scored.
“Everyone swung it well tonight, and the pitchers pitched great,” Trimble said. “[They have] a good team out there, trying to nudge back at the end. We locked it down, so that was a lot of fun. These guys are a lot of fun.”
The Blue Wahoos jumped out in front early, putting up a six-spot in the second inning while taking advantage of some Shuckers miscues.
Tony Bullard got the scoring started, launching a solo home run for his fifth of the year. After a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by starter Tate Kuehner (L, 7-5) moved Johnny Olmstead from first to third, the Pensacola shortstop came around to score on a fielder’s choice by Connor Caskenette that was booted by Shuckers shortstop Cooper Pratt.
Trimble drove in the next two runs in the second inning after Shuckers first baseman Eric Martinez misplayed an infield fly, falling for a single to allow Caskenette and Shane Sasaki to score.
“[I] was trying to handle the zone and get good counts to hit,” Trimble said. “That’s really all it comes down to.”
Kemp Alderman picked up an RBI single after a 107 mph ground ball deflected off of Pratt into center, scoring Jared Serna. Trimble made it a half dozen in the second inning after coming home on a passed ball.
The Wahoos added runs number seven and eight in the third, both coming in on bases-loaded walks to Michael Snyder and Serna. Kuehner’s night ended after walking Snyder, and the lefty was charged for eight runs (three earned) over 2.1 innings while walking four Blue Wahoos batters.
Luis Lara put the Shuckers on the board in the fifth inning after an RBI groundout to short. This was the only run tagged onto the line of Blue Wahoos starter Dax Fulton (W, 5-7). With seven strikeouts across 5.0 innings, the six-foot-seven southpaw lowered his ERA to 4.88 on the season.
Pensacola tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of a Cody Morissette sacrifice fly to center to bring Trimble home for the second time.
The Shuckers picked up a pair of runs in the final innings. Mike Boeve came around to score on a wild pitch in the eighth, while Jheremy Vargas picked up an RBI single in the ninth.
Pensacola’s bullpen, a strength all season, protected the lead once again. Right-hander Jesse Bergin twirled two no-hit innings, while Ike Buxton and Josh Ekness were tagged for a run each.
With their second straight win over Biloxi and their 52nd win of the season overall, the Wahoos now lead the Montgomery Biscuits by 4.5 games for the second-half title.
“We are looking to just continue to have fun and keep playing hard,” Trimble said. “They’re a good team, but we will continue to stick to it and do what we do well.”
Pensacola and Biloxi will face off in game four of the series on Friday night, as Orlando Ortiz-Mayr (5-5, 4.08 ERA) makes his 15th start of the year for the Blue Wahoos.
GAME NOTABLES
— The Blue Wahoos welcomed a quartet of mascots at Thursday’s game. In addition to Kazoo, there was a mascot for social media influencer “Beach Billy,” and the Blue Wahoos’ own Mullet Man.
