International Paper Awards $66,450 in Grants To Local Organizations

International Paper’s Pensacola Mill has awarded $66,450 in International Paper Foundation grants to 30 local organizations, demonstrating the company’s commitment to education, hunger, health and wellness, disaster relief and initiatives that improve the planet.
“Through these grants, we aim to be catalysts for positive change, investing not just in projects, but in the collective well-being of the community,” said Hunter Morris, Pensacola Mill Manager. “These funds will play a crucial role in supporting community-driven projects aimed at addressing hunger, promoting health and wellness, enriching children’s education, and providing disaster relief assistance.”

Grants were determined after careful committee review with local team members. Recommendations are subsequently reviewed by the International Paper Foundation’s grants committee, which then must be confirmed and ratified by the foundation’s board of trustees.

Escambia County Contracting With Town Of Century For Library Lawn Maintenance, Christmas Lights

Escambia County is set to enter into an interlocal agreement with the Town of Century for lawn maintenance at the Century Branch Library.
The Century Branch Library and the Century Town Hall share a common lawn. Century employees will provide lawn maintenance at the library at a cost of $300 per month. In addition, the town will install Christmas lights on the library to match those at the town hall at a cost not to exceed $150.
Century is required to maintain liability insurance during the one year contract. The town council has already approved the agreement, and the Board of County Commissioners will consider it on December 7.

Northview FFA Students Build Duck Boxes For Jones Swamp

Northview High School FFA Chapter students built duck boxes that were recently installed by Escambia County Natural Resources Management at Jones Swamp.
Wood ducks typically nest in tree cavities, but boxes provide suitable nesting sites in urbanized areas and can help attract ducks to local wetlands, according to the county. Wood ducks begin to pair up in January, with nesting starting in the early spring, so the Natural Resource Management Division is hoping to welcome some new feathered friends to the neighborhood soon.

Woman Charged After Newborn Tests Positive For Marijuana
December 5, 2023
An Atmore woman has been charged after her newborn tested positive for marijuana, according to the Atmore Police Department.
Christina Yanacheke, age 41 of Atmore, was charged with chemical endangerment.
The Escambia County (AL) Department of Human Resources notified Atmore Police that Yanacheke’s newborn tested positive for marijuana at North Baldwin Infirmary in Bay Minette.
Man Charged With Century Burglary
December 5, 2023
A Flomaton man has been charged in connection with a burglary in Century.
Cameron Oscar Biggs, 24, was charged with burglary and dealing in stolen property. The stolen items were valued at $20,000.
Biggs allegedly burglarized a paint and body shop building at 8920 North Century Boulevard by removing plywood that was covering the windows. According to an arrest report, several stolen items were recovered after a search warrant was executed at a home on Hilltop Road in Century.
Bigss remained in the Escambia County Jail with bond set at $15,000.

Vice President Of Escambia (Ala.) School Board Charged With Revealing Grand Jury Secrets

Another member of the Escambia County (Alabama) School Board has been charged with revealing grand jury secrets.
District 4 Board Member Cynthia A. Jackson, age 72, who was elected board vice president just last week, was arrested midday Monday on a charge related to revealing grand jury secrets, according to jail records.
Last week, an Escambia County, Alabama School Board member, who is a weekly newspaper owner and publisher, and one of her reporters were officially been indicted by a grand jury.
Atmore News Publisher Sherry Digmon, 72, and Don Fletcher, 69, were each indicted by an Escambia County Grand Jury on charges of “revealing evidence of the grand jury”.
Both were set to appear in court Monday for a preliminary hearing, but that hearing was canceled after the indictment was returned. They are no longer eligible for a preliminary hearing after being indicted.
Digmon is co-owner and publisher of The Atmore News which reported October 25 that the local district attorney was investigating COVID funds paid to school system employees. The paper also revealed that Digmon’s phone and that the phone of another school board member had been seized under a search warrant. Both had recently voted against renewing an employment contract with Superintendent of Education Michele McClung.
Jim Allen’s Melissa Parker Named School District Stellar Employee Of The Month

Jim Allen Elementary School’s Melissa Parker was the Escambia County Public Schools Stellar Employee for the month for November.
When Jim Allen’s media specialist retired, Parker willingly took on additional responsibilities and assisted in all aspects of the library, ensuring a seamless transition for the new media specialist. She worked diligently alongside the new specialist to swiftly restore the functionality of the library.
“Parker demonstrates exceptional qualities as an employee. She starts her day by warmly welcoming students as they arrive on campus, always addressing them by name. Throughout the day, Melissa excels in her role at the library, working collaboratively with the media specialist to guide students in finding the right books and discussing their current reading choices,”the district said.
“Melissa’s unwavering optimism in the face of change serves as a valuable lesson for others. She takes pride in being an integral part of the Jim Allen community and actively participates in after-hours events. Ms. Parker’s unwavering dedication to supporting and motivating students and teachers drives her to exceed expectations at Jim Allen,” a district statement continued.
Multiple Injuries Reported In Highway 29, Highway 97 Intersection Crash
December 4, 2023
Multiple injuries were reported in a crash midday Sunday at the intersection of Highway 29 and Highway 97 in Molino.
The three-vehicle crash involving a pickup truck and two SUVs was reported about 11:47 a.m., and at least two Escambia County EMS ambulances responded.
The Molino and Cantonment stations of Escambia County Fire Rescue and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating and has not released further details.
