Wahoos Dealt Series-Closing Loss In Montgomery

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos (56-51) fell in their series finale against the Montgomery Biscuits (58-50) by a final score of 3-2.
The Wahoos sprung on top immediately in the top of the first. After a single and two walks loaded the bases against Montgomery starter Owen Wild, second baseman Yiddi Cappe bounced an RBI infield single to the left side to drive in his first Double-A run.
The Biscuits responded in the home half with a run of their own. With two on and two out against Pensacola starter Jacob Miller, second baseman Brayden Taylor drove home third baseman Cooper Kinney with a single to tie the game 1-1.
Neither team scored again until the top of the fifth inning. Facing new Montgomery righthander Ryan Shreve (W, 4-3), right fielder Kemp Alderman doubled and center fielder Fenwick Trimble walked to put two Wahoos aboard with nobody out. Left fielder Colby Shade then sacrificed to move both runners up before Yiddi Cappe drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly. After five innings, Pensacola led 2-1.
Montgomery battled back with a rally in the sixth inning. Facing lefthander Luis Palacios (L, 3-3) in his second inning of relief, the Biscuits put a pair aboard with a walk and a hit batter. A double steal then placed runners at second and third with one out before Palacios struck out Biscuit designated hitter Colton Ledbetter. Righthander Nigel Belgrave (BS, 2) then entered and allowed a two-out, two-run single to center fielder Homer Bush Jr. that gave Montgomery a 3-2 lead.
Bush’s go-ahead hit proved to be the difference as Montgomery shut down the Blue Wahoos to close out the series. The Biscuits’ staff retired the final 13 Blue Wahoo batters of the game in order en route to a 3-2 victory.
With the defeat, the Wahoos’ lead over the Biscuits in the Southern League’s South Division stands at 2.5 games with 31 games remaining.
The Blue Wahoos return home on Tuesday, August 12 when they begin a six-game series versus the Birmingham Barons
Man Found Deceased Along The Railroad Tracks In Cantonment

A man was found deceased along the railroad tracks in Cantonment Saturday afternoon.
The man was discovered by a CSX crew around 2:25 p.m. near Highway 95A, just south of Tate School Road.
According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, the man may have acturally been struck by a train sometime Friday. A train engineer had reported that an engineer had observed something along the tracks on Friday in the immediate area.
A bicycle was reportedly found near the man.
The incident remains under investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. The man’s name has not been released.

Federal Grand Jury Indicts Pair for Fentanyl, Cocaine Trafficking

Two Escambia County men were federally charged with drug trafficking.
Calvin D. Thomas, Jr., 30, and Satori Ashanti Keys, 45, were indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday. Both men were charged with conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl, more than 500 grams of cocaine, and marijuana; one count of possession with intent to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl, more than 500 grams of cocaine, and marijuana; one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense; and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Both will be arraigned next week before a U.S. magistrate in Pensacola.
If convicted, as charged, they face up to life imprisonment.
The Drug Enforcement Administration, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case.
Hundreds Of Families Received A Back To School Helping Hand

Hundreds of families received a little extra boost with the big distribution Saturday morning at Marcus Pointe Baptist Church.
Families received food from Farm Share and backpacks filled with school supplies.
The distribution was held by Rep. Michelle Salzman and a coalition of community sponsors and partners, including the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. Many other groups volunteered, including Tate High School baseball.
“Today’s food distribution and back to school backpack giveaway was a beautiful reminder that when we set aside the background noise and focus on what truly matters, we can make a real difference,” Salzman said. “Moments like these show the power of coming together to support our neighbors, lift each other up, and make the world a better place one act of kindness at a time.”

Dominant White Earns First Double-A Win in 6-1 Wahoos Victory

Thomas White took a no-hitter through 5.2 innings, struck out nine Montgomery Biscuits batters over a career-high 6.0 frames, and earned his first Double-A win as the Pensacola Blue Wahoos snapped a four-game losing skid with a 6-1 win on Saturday night.
White (W, 1-1), the top prospect in the Miami Marlins organization, allowed only two harmless walks before Homer Bush Jr. broke up his no-hit bid with a soft single into center field with two outs in the sixth inning. White has now struck out 30 batters over 15.2 innings in his last three starts, allowing only two total earned runs in the process.
Biscuits starter Ty Johnson (L, 5-5) matched White zero for zero in the early innings, allowing only a single and a walk through 5.0 frames. Spencer Bramwell led off the sixth with a single, advanced on a Michael Snyder hit, took third on a Cody Morissette bunt, and scored on a Fenwick Trimble sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Blue Wahoos lead in the sixth.
White, who had never pitched beyond 5.1 innings in his professional career, stranded two in the bottom of the sixth to complete his outing on a high note. The Pensacola offense then tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh with a two-out rally, started by Yiddi Cappe’s first Double-A hit. Eric Rataczak singled Cappe home, and Bramwell capped the inning with a three-run homer to put the Blue Wahoos ahead 5-0.
Though the Biscuits pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Kamren James RBI single, the Blue Wahoos added a run back in the ninth on another Rataczak RBI single before Will Kempner closed out a 6-1 win by getting the final six outs. Kempner has now pitched 19.0 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to June 24, and has not allowed a run in 12 straight appearances.
With the win, the Blue Wahoos gain a game on Montgomery and now lead the Biscuits in the second half South Division race with 32 games to play.
The Blue Wahoos wrap up their series against the Biscuits on Sunday. First pitch from Riverwalk Stadium is scheduled for 3:33 p.m.
Tax Collector’s Molino Office To Become Appointment Only

The Escambia County Tax Collector’s Molino and Downtown offices will transition to serving customers by appointment only, beginning Wednesday, September 3, 2025, in an effort to enhance efficiency and reduce wait times.
“We’re committed to providing our community with efficient and accessible services,” said Escambia County Tax Collector Scott Lunsford. “Offering appointments at these locations allows us to better manage demand and give residents the quality service they expect. Our goal is to eliminate spikes in traffic and decrease or eliminate long wait times.”
Many tax collector services are available online at EscambiaTaxCollector.com, including:
- Tag renewals
- Electronic title printing
- Property tax payments
- Business tax receipt renewals
In addition, drive-thru services are available at the Molino, Brentwood, and Downtown offices, providing another fast and convenient option for completing transactions. There is no additional fee to pay online using an eCheck.

Two Injured, One Charged With Attempted Murder in Atmore Shooting

Two people were shot Thursday evening in Atmore, and a suspect was arrested soon after for attempted murder.
Jamyron Jawuan Anderson, age 22 of Atmore, was charged with two felony counts of attempted murder and one count of discharging a firearm into an unoccupied vehicle. He was booked into the Escambia County (AL) Detention Center in Brewton and later released on bond.
About 5 p.m. Thursday, the Atmore Police Department responded to the 300 block of Everette Street after receiving several 911 calls of shots fired. They arrived to find that two people had been shot. One victim was transported to a trauma center with non-life threatening injuries. The second victim was grazed by a bullet and treated at the scene.
“The incident stemmed from a long-running domestic issue between two other parties,” Atmore Police said.

Northview And Tate Chapters Named 3-Star Chapters In National Chapter Program

Both the Tate and Northview High School FFA Chapters have been named 3 Star Chapters, in the 2025 National Chapter Award program, by the Florida FFA Association announced on Friday.
The National Chapter Award program recognizes FFA chapters that actively implement the mission and strategies of the organization.
Confirmed Rabid Fox Bites Atmore Resident; Second Person Also Being Treated

An Escambia resident was attacked and bitten by a fox on August 7 outside the victim’s residence on Highway 31 in Atmore. Another person was present at the time of the incident and came in direct physical contact with the fox. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Department was notified of the incident, and a rabies investigation was begun.
The fox was taken to the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) Bureau of Clinical Laboratories, where it was confirmed positive for rabies. Rabies is a viral disease that can be fatal if untreated. Both persons are receiving appropriate medical attention, and the victim is receiving post-exposure prophylaxis. No additional exposures have been identified at this time.
“Although rabies is primarily found in wild animals, since widespread vaccination of domestic animals began over 70 years ago, it continues to be a risk and a public health threat,” Dr. Dee W. Jones, State Public Health Veterinarian, said. “Although attacks such as this by rabid wildlife are rather uncommon, it highlights the risk rabies continues to pose and hopefully reminds people to be aware of the risks and continue to vaccinate their pets.”
It is very common for domestic animals and pets to have contact with a wild rabid animal. Alabama state law requires that dogs, cats and ferrets 12 weeks of age and older be current with rabies vaccination. Rabies vaccines are also available for horses and other livestock if recommended by a veterinarian. Vaccinating animals reduces the risk of rabies infection should exposure occur; thus, vaccinations protect animals, as well as their owners and caretakers.

Breaks Go Biscuits’ Way As Wahoos Lose 7-2

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos dropped their fourth game in a row to the Montgomery Biscuits on Friday night, falling by a 7-2 final.
The game started in a promising fashion for the Blue Wahoos, who tagged Biscuits ace Brody Hopkins (W, 5-7) with two first-inning runs. With two on and two out, Cody Morissette hit a shallow fly to left field that was initially ruled a sliding catch by Noah Myers before being overturned as a two-run single.
Staked to a 2-0 lead, Blue Wahoos starter Orlando Ortiz-Mayr (L, 6-6) surrendered a run to Montgomery in the bottom of the first. Colton Ledbetter led off with a single, was balked to second, and scored on a Cooper Kinney groundout to get the Biscuits on the board.
The 2-1 lead held until the bottom of the third, when the Biscuits scored six runs on only three hits. Homer Bush tied the game with an RBI infield single and Brayden Taylor gave the Biscuits a 3-2 lead with a two-out, bases-loaded walk. Tatem Levins then blasted a deep drive to right-center field that took an unusual bounce off the wall, caroming away from Blue Wahoos center fielder Colby Shade. By the time the ball was relayed home, Levins had circled the bases for a rare inside-the-park grand slam that put the Biscuits ahead 7-2.
The Pensacola bullpen, comprised of Jesse Bergin, Josh Ekness and Nigel Belgrave, combined for 4.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball. But the Montgomery relievers were equally effective, keeping the Blue Wahoos off the scoreboard and handing the Biscuits their fourth win in a row.
With the series win, the Biscuits have clinched a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Blue Wahoos. Pensacola’s lead in the division race is now only 2.5 games.
The Blue Wahoos continue their series against the Biscuits on Saturday.
