Local Students Gather For ‘See You At The Pole’ (With Photo Gallery)

Students gathered to pray at their schools across the area Wednesday morning during the annual See You at the Pole event.

Students gathered as school began to pray in the non-denominational event. See You at the Pole is a national student-initiated, student organized, and student-led event. Students prayed for their school, friends, teachers, government and the nation.

Photos: The Tin Man And Toto Welcome Fall In Barrineau Park

It’s time for those fall decorations, and they’ve really stepped up the game at one North Escambia home.

The Tin Man is in the 4800 block of Highway 196, just west of Barrineau Park School Road. And if you look closely at the photos, you’ll see the family dog Buzzy making a special appearance as Toto.

The Tin Man is the creation of Kelly Griffith and Darenda Etheridge.

Kingsfield Students Go Geocaching, Blast To The Moon And Learn About The Environment

Fifth grade students from Kingsfield Elementary School took part in science programs at the Roy Hyatt Environmental Center in Cantonment this week.

Students took part in a geocaching adventure in search of caches filled with science treasures on Monday.

Tuesday, students blasted off into space while participating in a planetarium program. They also learned about the water cycle, weathering erosion and deposition, and water pollution in an environmental program.

Take Stock in Children Announces 34 New Students Selected For Local Scholarship Program

Take Stock in Children recently introduced 34 new scholarship recipients and their mentors. There are 29 new seventh graders and five alternates from eighth or ninth grades among the new class..

Students will receive a college scholarship upon graduation from high school as long as they maintain good grades, attendance and citizenship, remain crime and drug free, and meet weekly with a volunteer community mentor.

The newly selected students include:

  • Bailey Middle – Dewey Cushing Jr, Jacquelynn Davis, Landon Green, Xandria Smith, Gabriella Soto
  • Bellview Middle – Allison Banks, Raven Falzone, Bethany Gurley
  • Beulah Middle – Izaiah Cubias, Andrew Moles
  • Brown Barge Middle –- Lana Carter, Tyrin Joiner, Elizabeth Mendiola (8th grade), Kenya Wadley (8th grade)
  • Ernest Ward Middle – Jackson Davis, Laura Laborde, Jared Long, Genesis Scott-Johnson
  • Ferry Pass Middle – Retag Abdelhamid, Jayden Brown, Kyleigh Cox, Azarria MGhee, Amiya Rudolph, Alysa Sutton, Mary Kaitlyn Johnson (8th grade), Catherine Wester (8th grade)
  • Ransom Middle – Jayda Fillingim, Adrianna Middleton, Ceth Morris, Kaylyn Weiss
  • Warrington Middle – Shynia Bowie, Nyking Curry, Christian Stone
  • West Florida High – Patrick Delcour (9th grade)

Take Stock in Children is a statewide non-profit organization operating locally under the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation. Take Stock provides “scholarships, mentors & hope” to deserving young people selected through a need-based application process through the public middle schools at the end of their 6th grade year. Scholarship donations from local foundations, organizations, businesses and individuals are matched dollar-for-dollar when scholarships are purchased from Florida Prepaid College Foundation each year and are held until students successfully graduate from high school.

There are now a total of 138 students in grades 7-12 in Escambia County’s program.

The Cantonment Rotary Club held their second annual “Hawgs & Hoot Rods car and motorcycle show at Krystal on Nine Mile Road.  The event also featured pulled pork sandwich plates. It was all a fundraiser for the Cantonment Rotary Club Foundation to support the local chapter of the Boys & Girls Club of America.

Byrneville Second Graders Visit Roy Hyatt Environmental Center

Byrneville Elementary School second graders got up close with nature this week at the Roy Hyatt Environmental Center in Cantonment. The students met Simon the bearded dragon and Ozzie the diamondback terrapin, and they compared and contrasted reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds and mammals as part of their visit. First Responders Dedicate New Library Flagpole On 9-11
