Sunday will be sunny with temperatures warming up into the 80s with chance of rain.

By Monday afternoon and into Monday night, there is a chance of strong to severe weather as cold front approaches our area. By Tuesday, showers will taper off, and we’re looking at the upper 40’s possible in North Escambia for Tuesday night.

Nestor is now officially Post Tropical Cyclone Nestor. It lost its tropical characteristics and is just a post tropical low pressure system.

Nestor did not have any real impact at all on North Escambia’s local weather, beyond a little breeze. The latest on the storm is in the graphics on this page.

Update: Tate High School Homecoming Changes

October 19, 2019

Due to the Escambia County School District’s decision to cancel all after-school activities Friday because of tropical weather, there are numerous changes to Tate High Homecoming 2019.

The homecoming football game against Washington has been rescheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday. There will be no homecoming parade or court presentation at Saturday’s game.

The homecoming dance is from 8 p.m. until midnight as scheduled Saturday night. The homecoming court will be presented at Saturday night’s dance. All court members and escorts are to report to the multipurpose room at 9:30. After the presentation, the king and queen will be crowned.

Tropical Storm Warning Dropped; Nestor To Bring Rain, Wind Overnight

Tropical Storm Nestor continues to race across the Gulf at 22 mph with a stop wind speed of 60 mph. As of the late afternoon Friday, the tropical storm warnings were dropped west of Navarre including Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

Tonight: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 58. Windy, with a northeast wind 15 to 20 mph increasing to 20 to 25 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: A 40 percent chance of showers before 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

School Is Open Friday; All After-School Activities Including Football Canceled

Schools in Escambia and Santa Rosa County are in session on Friday, but after school extracurricular activities including football have been canceled.

Friday extracurricular activities have been canceled including football games.

Tate High School’s homecoming game against Washington has been scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The Friday morning pep rally has been canceled. The homecoming dance Saturday night will go on as planned from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The Byrneville Elementary School Fall Carnival has also been canceled and will be rescheduled.

“Although current projections for this storm track for Tropical Storm Nestor indicate that our area will be spared the greatest part of the storm, the district does not want students to travel during inclement weather. On Saturday, October 19, 2019, the district will resume outside activities scheduled after noon,” Superintendent Malcolm Thomas said.

As of late Thursday night, Escambia County, Alabama, schools are monitoring the weather. All schools will be open on Friday and all extra-curricular activities are set to proceed as scheduled.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for the local coast, including Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

The greatest chance for impacts will be along the coastal areas with tropical storm force winds possible and isolated flash flooding.  Significant impacts are currently not expected in North Escambia beyond much needed rain and breezy conditions.

Potential Tropical Cyclone 16 was located in the Gulf of Mexico Thursday, moving across the Gulf. It is expected to impact the Gulf Coast Friday evening into Saturday morning and become a tropical or subtropical storm named Nestor. It is not expected to strengthen into a hurricane.

The latest forecast shows the storm tracking east of the area, with possible tropical storm-force winds forecast arriving within the next 36 hours.

Corrections Dept. To Hold Hiring Event On Friday For Century And Milton Prisons

October 17, 2019

The Florida Department of Corrections will host a same-day hiring event Friday for two local institutions.

The hiring event will be held at the Marcus Pointe Baptist Church at 6205 North W Street at 8 a.m. Friday for anyone interested in a career in as a corrections officer. The event will fill positions for Century Correctional Institution and Santa Rosa Correctional Institution in Milton.

A $1,000 hiring bonus is available at Santa Rosa CI. No experience is necessary, and all newly hired officers receive paid training. The starting salary for certified officers is $33,500, and comprehensive medical, dental and additional life insurance is available.
