Update: West Roberts Road Expected To Reopen Saturday

A portion of West Roberts Road that was temporarily closed for construction on August 29 is expected to reopen on Saturday, weather permitting, but it won’t be the end of the project.
Work is continuing on roadway reconstruction for the $4.6 million West Roberts Road Roadway and Drainage Improvements Project.
New lane closures began August 29 on the project, and Escambia County said West Roberts Road between Tate Road and Highway 29 was expected to reopen after Labor Day weekend, but that is now set for Saturday.
Once the full road closure ends, intermittent lane closures will continue along West Roberts Road. Weather permitting, the entire project is expected to be completed by “winter 2026,” the county said Thursday, a change from a previous fall estimate.
Residents, pedestrians, local traffic, and emergency vehicles will have access to properties within the work area at all times; however, there may be short periods when a driveway or entrance is temporarily blocked as equipment and materials are moved during construction.
The project will widen the roadway to two 12-foot-wide travel lanes with 5-foot-wide shoulders from Pine Forest Road to Highway 29. The roadway from the southern turn to Pine Forest Road will be resurfaced and striped.
The $4,635,298.30 project, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), was awarded to contractor C.W. Roberts Inc.

Let’s not forget the “traffic controller” at Tate and West Roberts sitting there under the tent on his phone with his shoes off. Unbelievable.
In addition to the above comments, they are following no traffic control requirements. When they repaved between Tate and Stefani they did not put any striping down the center lane which should be required. Can’t see anything at night. Worst project management yet. A joke.
Escambia county needs to get control of this project NOW.
Just drove by it (on Saturday) and guess what? NOT OPENED! I’m sure they will say that the weather was the issue, although most of the storms were during non-working hours. Or maybe this is the construction coordination they are talking about. Im sorry but not sorry. If you can’t get you construction coordinated before starting, maybe road construction or any type of contracting for that matter. I agree with some of the other complaints. I remember the last time they closed the section between Tate and 29 and literally week a week with no one working on it. Wouldn’t be surprised if company has already run out of funds. I’ll be surprised if this even gets completed by start of 2027.
If it’s bad now wait until the motor homes, 18 wheelers and lawn trailers can do 65 on the new road…buckle up.
This project is nowhere near completion and is still a total wreck. There’s been a pile of cut up tires on the corner of my road for a month. Never been touched. The left and right lanes are not level with each other, and the sides of the road are a horrible mess all the way down West Roberts. Also, for any other residents who live off West Roberts, we need to band together. I don’t know about any of you guys, but my road is covered in clay and asphalt that was brought in on our tires. Who is gonna clean up that mess? Also, I’m not the only one with this issue, my driveway was immaculate before this project. Not a stain, nothing. My driveway is now a combination of black asphalt and red clay. Who is paying to clean up our street and cleaning our driveways? Our county departments in Escambia County are trash. The road department is a joke. Wanna know why the project overran its completion date? Just take a few minutes and look at how many people are on site vs how many people are actually working. Most are standing around on their phone or sitting in their trucks and cars the whole time. I almost had a serious wreck at 29 and WR last week because there was no one directing traffic. After almost having a head on collision, I backed down WR and low and behold, the guy that was supposed to be directing traffic, well he was sitting in his car and watched me drive right past. Escambia County should be ashamed of themselves if this is what they call professionalism and a safe environment.
It would get done faster if everyone didn’t stand around on their cell phones on the job site. That’s all I ever see, all of them on their cell phones.
This has been one of the worst ran road projects I’ve had the misfortune of driving through. Multiple accidents and a single temporary light that has a long timer that you have to wait long times for even when there is no traffic.
Police presence is almost nil and even when they are there, they ignore the countless drivers doing illegal U-turns on top of the railroad crossing and using both connivence stores to do left turns that they are not supposed to be making there.
All of this for what? A couple extra feet of road?? How about you two-lane W.Roberts to Pine Forest because that is what is going to take to alleviate traffic congestion on this once very sleepy road. The traffic load for Navy Federal really put this section of road on the map.
A stop light is desperately needed at Pine Forest / W. Robert’s intersection. Right now, with the current road work and closures it is almost back to pre N.Fed days of traffic. However, once all that construction is done it will be a big bottleneck and turning onto/off of pine forest will be a nightmare.
Now with all the new apartments and fast food junkeires on Pine Forest just south of Nine mile the traffic is only going to get worse While they are at it they can get rid of the merge lane on Pine Forest as well since it no longer makes sense and has caused the interstate to back up multiple times in recent history.
Lol okay traffic rant done for today good luck out there you’ll need it.
This project is like watching a train wreck about to happen. I sincerely appreciate North Escambia covering this story. For future reference I predict this project will (1) not come close to the completion date (2) will over run the current budget and (3) will not meet the objectives as promised. Escambia County Commissioner Steve Berry needs to publicly comment and show that he is providing oversight.
