Grand Opening Held For New We Care Thrift Store In Atmore (With Gallery)

The ribbon was cut on Friday morning for a new We Care Thrift Store in Atmore, which benefits prison ministry programs across the area.
We Care’s three thrift stores fund the We Care Program in-prison ministries in Alabama, Florida and Ohio, including Holman and Fountain correctional facilities in Atmore, and the Century and Santa Rosa correctional institutions in Century and East Milton.
The Atmore We Care Thrift Store is located on Highway 21 at Northgate Drive, across from Hendrix Tractor and just over two miles north of the former store location in downtown Atmore. The brand-new 21,000-square-foot building includes a dedicated donation and sorting area and 10,000 square feet of retail space.
The thrift store offers a variety of merchandise, including a wide selection of clothing, household items, electronics, and furniture. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The former downtown Atmore We Care location, which opened in 1989, closed on September 27. We Care’s other stores have been located in Monroeville since 2002 and Flomaton since 2008.

Northview Chiefs Slip To Baker 22-19 (With Photo Gallery)

The undefeated Baker Gators got past the Northview Chiefs 22-19 Friday night in Baker.
Tyson Phifer, Easten Odom, and Nate Duffy each had touchdowns for the Chiefs. Northview also had big interceptions from Caleb Levins and Phifer (pictured above).
With the loss, the Chiefs fell to 1-5. Baker improved to 7-0, a feat the Gators had not accomplished since they won the 1A state championship in 2020.

While they fell short of the win, Northview head coach Doug Vickery said he was proud of the performance from the Chiefs.
“I”m proud of these guys; the effort was really, really good,” Vickery said. “They just haven’t given up all year and just continue to play hard –the resiliency is there. I hate it for them, I wish we could have pulled one out, and it’s been several close ones, a play here, a play there. We’ve just got to learn how to finish it.”
Next week, the Northview Chiefs will host the Jay Royals in Tommy Weaver Memorial Stadium in Bratt. Coming off a 47-7 win over Central on Friday night, Jay is 2-4 on the season.

Register By Monday For 2025 Escambia County Agriculture Tour

The 2025 Escambia County Agriculture Tour is coming up next week, and the deadline to buy tickets is Monday, October 6.
Participants in the Friday, October 10 tour will explore farms, area agricultural processing facilities, meet local farmers, and discover the positive impact of agriculture in Escambia County. From farm animals to fresh produce, this tour has something for everyone.
Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Escambia County 4-H Property on Highway 99 in Molino. The tour bus will depart at 8:30 a.m.

Tate Aggies Sweep The Jay Royals In Friday Afternoon Showdown

The Tate Aggies secured a decisive victory over the Jay Royals in straight sets on Friday afternoon.
The Aggies dominated, especially in the first two frames, as they took the match 3-0.
Tate overpowered the Royals with strong sets of 25-9 and 25-7 to jump out to a commanding two-set lead. Jay High showed improved effort and resolve in the third set, pushing the Aggies more closely before Tate closed out the match with a 25-17 finish.

Tammy Hodge, born in Atmore, Alabama, and a long-time resident of North Escambia County, Florida, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on October 2, 2025, surrounded by her family. She lived her life with a steadfast faith in God and a deep love for her family. Tammy’s gentle spirit, compassion for others, and devotion to Christ touched all who knew her.
A devout church volunteer, Tammy dedicated countless hours to serving her church and community. Her heart for helping others was recognized in 1987 when she was honored as a Florida School Volunteer of the Year Finalist—a testament to her servant’s heart and commitment to making a difference in the lives of children and families.
Tammy was first married to Gerald Bell, with whom she shared the blessing of children. She later married Aaron Hodge, who preceded her in death, and with whom she shared many years of love and companionship.
She is survived by her mother Nancy Neal, her children: Christal Bell-Rivera (Ronnie), Naomi Conner (Tim), and Jeremiah Hodge (Katie), and her grandchildren: Angel Mitchell, Mallory Bell-Rivera, Taylor Smith (Charlie), Lucas Hodge, Hannah Conner, Avery Hodge, Mylo Hodge, and Micah Hodge.
She was preceded in death by her father Wallace Reid, stepmother Mattie Reid, her beloved son Christopher Bell, and her brother Ricky Pritchett.
Tammy also leaves behind her brothers Joe Reid (Myra), Steve Reid (Melissa), Glen Reid (Tammy), and Lonnie Purvis; and her sisters Claudia Turberville (Richard “PeeWee”), Margaret Jackson, Elanie Purvis, Regina Purvis, Robin Salter, Joy Simpson (Darrel), and Amanda Merritt (James).
Tammy’s life was a reflection of Proverbs 31:28— “Her children arise up and call her blessed.” Her faith, kindness, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
Serving as pallbearers will be BJ Reid, Johnathan Holland, Travis Holland, Al Capitell, Kevin Smith, and Jamie Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons Mylo Hodge and Micah Hodge.
Funeral Services
A Homegoing Celebration for Tammy will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Flomaton Funeral Home, with Brother Eric Johnson officiating. Family visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m., followed by public visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 12:00 p.m., with burial to follow at Beulah Chapel Assembly of God.
William Golsen ‘Billy’ Gates Jr.

Mr. William Golsen “Billy” Gates Jr., age 78, sadly passed away on October 3, 2025, in Atmore, Alabama, surrounded by his loving family. He was originally from Selma, Alabama, but spent most of his life in Atmore. Billy was known for his kind heart and the joy he brought to those around him, leaving behind cherished memories for his family and friends.
In his early years in the military, he was a helicopter mechanic. Commander Local Post 7016 VFW in Atmore was a dedicated community member known for his many contributions spending countless hours in service. He was a proud member of the American Legion and founded the Automotive Career Technology program at Escambia County High School, where he taught for 39 years. His service to his country included time spent in both the United States National Guard and the U.S. Army, with deployments to Korea and Iraq. Beyond his military and educational achievements, he enjoyed simple pleasures like drinking coffee with friends and spending time at NAPA, where he cherished the camaraderie of those around him. Greatly enjoyed watching Westerns, NCIS and 24.
Preceded in death by his parents William Golsen Gates, Sr. and Dorothy Battles Gates; sister, Diane Southerland.
He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Linda Gates of Atmore, Alabama; son, Justin Gates and wife Sarah of Loxley, Alabama; daughter, Alison Fournier and husband Chad of Atmore, Alabama; brother, Robert Gates of Lowndsboro, Alabama; six grandchildren, Jordan, Jesse, Savannah, Darrian, William, and Anna; six great-grandchildren, Viola, Dash, Atlas, Scarlett, Maggie and Jack Sheppard; dogs Brie and Briscoe.
Graveside service will be held Friday, October 10, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Alabama State Veterans Cemetery in Spanish Fort, with Reverend Rowdy Boyette officiating.
Visitation will be held October 9, 2025, from 6-8 p.m. at Petty Funeral Homes.
Century Man Charged With Strangulation, Burglary After Standoff With Deputies

A Century man remained in the Escambia County Jail Friday morning following allegations of a domestic assault that involved strangulation and led to a brief standoff with deputies earlier this week.
Elisha Tyquan Hunt, 31, was charged with domestic battery by strangulation, burglary with assault or battery domestic violence related, and obstructing justice.
An Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy on patrol in the parking lot of the Food Giant on North Century Boulevard when he was alerted by a vehicle braking sharply and sounding its horn. The deputy approached the distressed driver, an adult female, who was visibly injured and struggling to breathe, with blood observed on her face and vehicle.
The woman informed the deputy that she had just escaped an alleged assault by her boyfriend, later identified as Elisha Tyquan Hunt, after confronting him at a residence in the area. She reported that the dispute escalated when Hunt allegedly reached into her vehicle, which she was occupying, and choked her with two hands until she momentarily lost consciousness. The woman managed to flee the location in her car immediately after regaining her breath, driving until she spotted the patrol vehicle, according to an arrest report.
Following the initial report, deputies located Hunt at a residence on Lake Drive in Century. Upon arrival, the scene was secured, and commands were issued for any occupants to exit the building.According to the report, deputies identified Hunt being inside the residence, but he refused multiple warnings to surrender, initiating a standoff that lasted more than half an hour. Eventually, Hunt complied with the commands and was taken into custody without further physical incident.
Hunt’s bond was set for $31,000.
