Northview’s Maliki Haynes Commits To Hinds College (With Gallery)

February 2, 2023

On National Signing Day, Northview High’s Maliki Haynes signed a letter of intent to play football at Hinds Community College in Mississippi.

“He’s a competitor at heart and played the game of football with a lot of confidence,” Northview head football coach Wes Summerford said.

“Through Maliki’s persistence he is here today for a special accomplishment that most do not get the opportunity to do,” he added. “His college of choice is getting a heck of a young man and a great football player.

Haynes joined the Chiefs this year, with his first game against Tate. In Northview’s run to the state championship game, Haynes had a late one-handed reception in the playoffs against Union County to seal a win, and a key 70-yard interception against Blountstown.

“This opportunity has been many years in the making, and I am grateful for this opportunity.” Haynes said. “I want to thank all of my coaches, both current and former, as well as my friends, family and teammates. I have nothing without them.”

February 1, 2023

A new retail shopping center has been approved for the Highway 97 site of a former lottery store murder.

The Escambia County Development Review Committee approved a development order for the new 4,750 square foot shopping center on Highway 97 at the state line in Davisville, just outside Atmore.

The strip mall will be at the site of the former O’Yes Lotto store; the northern side of the 4.42 acre parcel is the state line. Plans show three separate retail shops with 16 parking spaces.

The lottery retailer has been closed since the owner was shot and killed in a robbery attempt on November 6, 2012.

While the development is in Florida, the shopping center will receive water from West Escambia Utilities in Atmore.

Charges Filed After Dead Dog, Malnourished Animals Found

February 1, 2023

A man was charged and a woman is wanted on animal cruelty charges after a dog was found dead in a kennel and several other malnourished animals were found near Berrydale.

Anthony Harold Hopkins, 42, of Jay, is in the Santa Rosa County Jail without bond on five counts of confining animals without sufficient food and water. Haley Nicole Lynne Williams, 30, of Jay, is wanted on the same charges.

According to an arrest report, deputies found a deceased dog under a blanket in an advanced state of decomposition.

Another dog was extremely malnourished, “where the outline of each rib bone could be seen”, and was covered in feces, the report states.

A malnourished pit bull was found in a kennel inside the home.

“The kennel floor was covered in feces and urine. It appeared the kennel had not been cleaned for some time,” the report states. “The dog also had injuries to its face and paws. The injuries to its face appeared to be superficial cuts and the injuries to the paws appeared to be from exposure to feces over a period of time.”

A cat and a pit were also discovered in poor condition on the property.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 983-1190 or Santa Rosa Crime Stoppers at (850) 437-STOP. Crime Stoppers callers could earn a reward up to $3,000.
