Local Marine Travis Nelson Killed In Afghanistan

August 19, 2011

A local family learned Thursday that their 19-year old Marine son, LCpl Travis Nelson, was shot and killed while conducting combat operations in in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Travis Nelson — a member of the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. — had been in Afghanistan for about a month. His 19th birthday was just two weeks ago.

Travis attended Bratt Elementary School from the first through fifth grades and Ernest Ward Middle School through the seventh grade. His family then moved to Pace, where he attended Pace High School.

Travis grew up in a military family. Friends said Thursday night that they remember a young Travis always had two things on his mind — fishing and  growing up to join the military.

“He had the military in his blood growing up,” said close family friend Janet Little Cooper of Bratt, who watched Travis grow up with her son. “That’s what he always wanted. He never faltered on that.”

Chris Chambliss agreed. He coached Travis in Northwest Escambia baseball at Bradberry Park in Walnut Hill.

“He talked about the military a lot when he was young. He always wanted to be a Marine when he became a young man,” he said.

His parents, Beckie and Scott Nelson, moved back to Bratt about a year ago. His sister, Anna, will begin the sixth grade Monday at Ernest Ward Middle School. Travis was engaged to Madeline Cates of Pace; She had recently moved to Bratt to live with the Nelson family to await Travis’ return from Afghanistan.

Funeral arrangements are not yet complete.

My US Marine (Combat Veteran from The Battle of Koh Tang, last 41 names on the Vietnam War Memorial) and I pray for Travis’ family everyday. Our hearts are heavy for your loss.

I did not know Travis. But I know his brother Chandler Case, who is a fine young man. Posting this Memorial Day to let all of Travis’ family and friends know that his sacrifice in service of our nation will never be forgotten. It is clear that he was a very fine young man who laid his life at the alter of freedom so that we all can enjoy our lives in this great country. Your son lead a great life of honor and dignity and your sacrifice is as realand appreciated as it was in 2011. God Bless.

As I rode down 65 today, in a bus load of 5th graders coming back from a field trip, I heard whispers from the girls behind me. They saw the back of the families vehicle, in memory of Travis. I heard them read aloud his name and tell others to look. I quickly pulled up the name on my phone and read his story to a couple of the kids. Want you to know we remember him. We remember your family and we thank you all for the great sacrifice you have given. God Bless.

For everyone that knew Travis and his family, I knew Travis and it’s definitely disheartening knowing that a fellow brother of mine is now gone. The fact that he’s gone, definitely makes me feel like it’s only a matter of time before something bad happens to me. I know Travis is looking down watching over every single one of us while we’re here, and wishes he was still here to fight alongside us. To the Nelson’s and his friends, know that I sincerely would’ve laid my life down with no hesitation to have saved his. You are all in my prayers and I hope you all eventually come to some sort of peace knowing that he joined God in heaven.

    Sincerely,
    Ryan (Travis’s Brother)

    To the Nelson Family,

Please know you are joined by many….grieving with you…..over your loss. You see…..your son was my son essentially. Travis sounded just like my son with his love of the Marines at an early age. Travis fulfilled his dream. My son acheived his dream about the same time as Travis. They both ended up in the 1/6. They deployed from Lejuene on the same day…..most likely ate together and bunked together at Camps Leatherneck, Dwyer and Hanson.

Last week, my son posted the following on his Facebook page:

“My friends go to college, I go to war. At the same hour they wake up and decide not to go to school or work that day…..I’ve been at works for hours. Their alarms wake them up…..my alarms send me to take cover. They make plans based on how they feel…… I do as the schedule that was put out to me demands. They can’t wait to leave their homes…. I can’t wait to get back to mine. But when we look back on our respective lives……they’ll like theirs…..and I’ll be damn proud of mine.”

I’m sure Travis felt the same way about his career choice. I thank God that here in the U.S. we have brave men and women like Travis that are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, so the rest of us can live free.

    Rest in peace Marine.

    Semper Fidelis,

    Steve Keeble

Words cannot express the heartbreak I feel for yall Beckie, Scott, Anna, Madaline and all of your family. I pray that God will see yall through this and comfort each and everyone of you during this time and in the future. The last time I saw Travis when he and Daniel went “floatin down the creek fishin” I enjoyed talking with him, he grew up from the little boy I remember to become a fine young man. Daniel and Jenna were so very PROUD of their brother. Beckie you have been a wonderful stepmom to my Daniel and Jenna they Love you very much and Travis was blessed to have you as his Mother…I hope knowing that so many have yall in their prayers may be of a little comfort to you as well as all the lives that Travis has touched in a positive way. Again God Bless Yall and God Bles the USA.

My heart aches for you Scott, Becky, and Anna. We can never understand why bad things happen to good people. Travis went to a part of the world that needed help. He went to a place that others would turn away from. Travis was a bright spot in a dark part of the world. As a young boy, you could always see and enjoy his smile. He was and will always be a bright spot in our hearts and minds. We cannot begin to know the pain you feel right now, but I hope you know that we are praying and lifting you all up into God’s loving arms.

I don’t know any that are involved and I can never fathom what you are going through right now. However, I recently married into a family that is full of people who serve our country, including my husband. I understand the sacrifices that they make everyday, and so I understand the sacrifice that Mr. Travis Nelson has made for this country and for that, I am eternally grateful! I can never say thank you enough to those who serve this great Nation! I don’t know what I could ever say or do to help, but know that i am always praying!!

    Scott, Becki and Madeline,

I am so very sorry for your loss. I found out about Travis when coming home from work last night. It tore my heart out to know that another young Devil Dog had fallen but even more so because he was one of my former Young Marines. When I met Travis there was no doubt in my mind he would be the Marine he wanted to be. Motivated, a desire to succeed and a love for our beloved Corps emanated from this young man. He was a leader within our unit and a good Marine. We have been robbed of a talented and bright son, husband, brother, young man and fellow Marine. Travis chose to do a job that wasn’t glamorous, keeps us away from our loved ones for long periods of time and sometimes requires the ultimate sacrifice, and Travis did it with pride and no regrets. He will forever be remembered by us, his Marine brothers and sisters, for when we meet at our birthday ball or mess nights we will honor his memory as one that has gone before us.

Travis you will always be in my thoughts and prayers and will be forever missed! Semper Fi my brother!

I was fortunate enough to have met Travis just before deployment, spent a few days with him and his friends. He was a good man, and an even better Marine. One of those people you meet, and feel like you’ve known all your life. The world was a better place with him in it. I’m humbled by his bravery, and devastated by his loss. To his family, you are in my family’s thoughts and prayers, your son’s charisma touched so many lives, I doubt he knew just how important he had become to the families of his fellow soldiers. He is sorely missed by all.

  81. MGySgt Mike Holcomb & LCPL Tammy Phibbs-Holcomb on August 19th, 2011 11:22 am

    Dear Beckie & Scott,
Travis was one very special young man to me, my husband, MGySgt Holcomb, and four our kids (LCPL Megan Phibbs, MIDN Angel Holcomb and William Holcomb). As one of our very first Young Marines, we remember so much of him growing up in the Young Marines of Pensacola with Cox and the other boys. As a family of 5 marines and 1 Navy Officer, we all know the call that Travis felt to serve this great nation! Our daughter, Megan, is over in Afghanistan right now and asked us to let you all know how greatly she and all of us will miss Travis. He was a very special young man, with a great heart and a kindred spirit. At least we can all feel a little better knowing that God now has another Marine guarding heaven’s gates and watching over each and every one of us! May God’s blessing and serenity wash over each of you and keep you comforted in your time of great sorrow!

We first met Travis in Young Marines in 2007. He offered to Tutor my son in Math. After about two sessions it became apparent they were two peas in a pod (birthdays a little less than two years apart). Travis was my “second son”, my son’s “Brother”, Mentor, SCUBA partner, drill instructor, paintball and airsoft buddy and best friend.

He died doing what he believed in. One of his favorite quotes was “My flag I love, my flag I trust, I’ll go to my grave for my flag if I must.”

Deepest sympathy, love an prayers to Beckie, Scott, Anna, Madeline and all who knew and love Travis. It was an honor having him in our lives. We were Blessed!

In a small amount of time, Travis was able to touch many lives. I knew his father Scott very well. Scott was so proud of Travis, and always had stories to share of his family. Through Scott, many people in Pensacola, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, and Tampa, who worked away from home would listen to Scott and grew to know the Nelson family well.

I join everyone today grieving the loss of one of our BRAVE HEROS. I had the honor and privledge to share in a part of Travis’s life when at 6 years old he was a strong armed outfielder and crushing hitter for our T-Ball team. My prayers are that Beckie and Scott’s grief will be eased by knowing the gratitude that I and millions across our country have for their tremendus sacrafice. Travis gave his life so that other 6 year olds can have the opportunity to live in peace and have the freedom to live as they choose.
