Civilian Acts Canceled; Blue Angels Set To Fly Limited Performances

The civilian acts have been canceled for the Blue Angels Air Show at Pensacola Beach, and the Blue Angels will try to fly Saturday and Sunday.
The Blues will perform a limited show at 2 p.m. both days if the weather and winds fall within their limits.
The civilian acts were canceled due to winds from Tropical Storm Barry and a lack of availability of rescue units in the water.
The Santa Rosa Island Authority, FAA and Escambia County Emergency Management will decide at 8 a.m. Saturday if the Blue Angels will fly, and we’ll have the announcement on NorthEscambia.com.
In order to fly, the Blue Angels need the wind to be under 25 knots (28.76 mph) and a visibility of at least three nautical miles (3.45 statute miles).

Tate High’s Kat Venettozzi Flies With The Blue Angels

Tate High School teacher and coach Kat Venettozzi flew with the Blue Angels Thursday morning in advance of the Pensacola Beach Air Show.
Venettozzi pulled 7.2 Gs and did not black out during her flight with U.S. Navy Blue Angels pilot Lt. Cary Rickoff.

School Grades Are Out: How Did Your Child’s School Score?

School grades were released Thursday by the Florida Department of Education.
Among North Escambia area schools, Beulah, Bratt, Byrneville and Lipscomb elementary schools improved by one letter grade. At the middle school level, Ernest Ward also improved a letter grade. No North Escambia area school had a decline in their score.
Bratt, Lipscomb and Molino Park elementary schools are all A-ranked. Overall, the Escambia County School District received a B for the second consecutive year.
Here are the school grades for North Escambia area schools:
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Beulah improved from a C to a B.
Bratt improved from a B to an A.
Byrneville improved from a C to a B.
Jim Allen held steady with a B.
Kingsfield received their first grade of a B.
Pine Meadow held steady with a B.
Lipscomb improved from a B to an A.
McArthur held steady at a C.
Molino Park remained an A school.
MIDDLE SCHOOLS
Beulah Academy remained at a C.
Beulah Middle received their first grade of a C.
Ernest Ward improved from a C to a B.

Meet Maple: She Has A Nose For Tech And A Job With FDLE

Meet Maple. She has a nose for tech.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will official introduce Maple Thursday at the FDLE Pensacola Regional Operations Center. She is the agency’s first Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) canine, capable of sniffing out electronic storage devices like thumb drives, cellphones, SD cards and more.
Maple is a 3-year-old rescued lab mix trained by FDLE Pensacola Special Agent Stephanie Cassidy.
Agent Cassidy, assigned to the Cyber Electronic Surveillance Support Team, trained Maple to search for hidden devices in cases where suspects may try to conceal their crimes by hiding storage devices.
“As we all know, criminals are only getting smarter with today’s technology. Having an ESD K9 can make all the difference during search warrants or area searches where it is suspected that an electronic device may have been hidden, especially with technology becoming smaller and smaller,”
Maple is the only ESD canine in the Panhandle and one of three statewide. She will be used to assist other law enforcement agencies upon request.

Blood Drives Saturday At The Molino And Century Libraries

OneBlood will hold blood drives on Saturday at the Molino library from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. and at the Century library from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. All blood types are needed.
OneBlood welcomes blood donations from donors 16 years old and older. Donors that are 16 years old must present a signed permission form from their parent or a guardian before the donation.

Southern Pine Beetle Assistance Application Period Is Now Open

Applications are now being accepted for the 2019 Southern Pine Beetle Assistance and Prevention Program, according to the Florida Forest Service. Applications will be accepted through August 16.
“The southern pine beetle is one of the most economically devastating forest pests of the southeast,” said Jim Karels, State Forester and Director of the Florida Forest Service. “Our desire is to help landowners take preventative action now, significantly reducing the risks and impacts associated with the southern pine beetle and improving the health and productivity of their pine forests.”
The last major southern pine beetle outbreaks occurred between 1999 and 2002, resulting in an estimated $59 million in timber losses. Since its inception in 2005, the Southern Pine Beetle Assistance and Prevention Program has helped approximately 2,500 landowners on more than 187,000 acres.
The Southern Pine Beetle Assistance and Prevention Program, supported through a grant from the USDA Forest Service, is available to non-industrial private forest landowners in 44 Florida counties, the known range of the southern pine beetle. The program provides incentive payments to landowners who conduct a first pulpwood thinning. The program also offers partial cost reimbursement for activities such as prescribed burning, mechanical underbrush treatments, and the planting of longleaf or slash pine, which are less susceptible to southern pine beetle infestations.
Eligible landowners can apply for up to two practices per year. Funding requests may not exceed $10,000. All qualifying applications received during the submission period will be evaluated and ranked for approval.

Senate Confirms Wetherell As North Florida District Judge

The U.S. Senate confirmed President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge T. Kent Wetherell II to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida.
Judge Wetherell has served the people of Florida for the past 20 years—first as a deputy solicitor general, then as an administrative law judge, and finally as an appellate judge on the First District Court of Appeal, where he has served with since 2009.

Escambia County Offers Free Sand For Storm Preparation

Escambia County is offering sand for residents living in flood-prone areas. The sand is available on a first come, first served basis.
Residents must bring their own sandbags and shovels to one of the following locations (map):
- Baars Field Athletic Park – 13001 Sorrento Road, Pensacola
- Brent Athletic Park – 4711 N. W St., Pensacola
- Don Sutton Park – 2320 Crabtree Church Road, Molino
- Equestrian Center – 7750 Mobile Highway, Pensacola
- Escambia County Road Department – 601 Highway 297-A, Pensacola
- Ferry Pass Middle School – 8355 Yancey Lane, Pensacola, sand will be on the northwest corner of school property on Parazine Street
- John R. Jones Jr. Athletic Park – 555 E. Nine Mile Road, Pensacola

Cantonment Man Allegedly Threatened To Shoot His Wife And Daughter

A Cantonment man allegedly threatened to shoot his wife and daughter during a disturbance.
Arthur Linwood Emerson, 62, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to a disturbance on Filley Road after receiving reports that Emerson had a gun and made the statement that he was going to shoot everyone.
When deputies arrived at the residence, they were told that Emerson had waved the gun towards his daughter and his wife. Deputies could hear arguing coming from the garage as they approached and found Emerson sitting in a chair inside. Emerson was taken into custody, and a Remington .380 was located in right front pocket.
His wife told deputies that he had been drinking and an argument ensued over the daughter not keeping a job, according to an arrest report, before he waved the gun and threatened to shoot.
Emerson told deputies that he did have the firearm in his possession, but he never pulled it out, the report states. He said he would never hurt his wife or daughter.
Emerson was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $2,000 bond.
