Escambia Man Gets Prison Time After Submitting Fake Bills Of Sale For Cars

An Escambia County man is headed to prison for cheating the tax collector out of revenue on cars purchases.

Circuit Judge Jan Shackleford sentenced Christopher Canham to 24 months in state prison for two counts of theft of sales tax. After Canham completes his state prison sentence, he will be on probation for an additional three years. He previously pleaded guilty to the charges.

Between February and March of 2018, Canham submitted two fraudulent bills of sale for two cars to the Escambia County Tax Collector. On these forms he inserted fictitious trade in vehicles and falsified the total purchase prices. This had the effect of lowering the taxes due by over $6,000. Canham has a significant criminal history which includes prior convictions for theft and forgery.

Hill Files ‘Fetal Heartbeat’ Abortion Bill

State Rep. Mike Hill of Pensacola has filed a “fetal heartbeat” bill for the 2020 legislative session that would prevent doctors from performing an abortion if fetal heartbeats are detected.

A violation would be a third degree felony for “any person who knowingly or purposefully performs or induces an abortion on a pregnant woman with the specific intent of causing or abetting the termination of the life of the preborn human being whose preborn intrauterine heartbeat has been detected.”

Hill filed a similar bill during the last session, but it was never heard in committee.

Two Young Women Critically Injured In Fiery Crash In Gonzalez

Two people were critically injured in a fiery crash in Gonzalez Wednesday night.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 19-year old Paige Roberts of Pensacola was traveling north of Pauline Street north of East Kingsfield Road when she ran off the roadway and struck a tree about 10:30 p.m. Her 2011 Chevrolet Cruze then burst into flames. Bystanders tried unsuccessfully to free the two occupants of the vehicle.

Escambia Fire Rescue arrived on scene and extinguished the blaze before over a dozen first responders worked to extricate Roberts and her passenger,  18-year old Ashlynne Goins of Pace.

Both suffered serious injuries including significant burns, troopers said.

Roberts was  airlifted by LifeFlight helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital, and Goins was transported by Escambia County EMS to Sacred. Both were later transferred to the USA Health Burn Center in Mobile.

The FHP said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Roberts is 2019 graduate of Northview High School, while Goins is a senior.

$4.6 Million Highway 4 Resurfacing Begins Next Week In Santa Rosa County

Work begins next week on $4.3 million project to resurface and make other improvements on Highway 4 in Santa Rosa County.

The project will span from the Escambia River Bridge to Market Road (Highway 87A) about 3.5 miles east of Jay. The project will include milling and resurfacing the roadway, pedestrian safety improvements along sidewalk facilities, guardrail upgrades at the Escambia River bridge, expansion joint replacement on the West Coldwater Creek bridge, and the replacement of the waterline from east of State Street to Magnolia Street in Jay.

Motorists will encounter intermittent lane closures and traffic shifts during construction. The project is anticipated to be complete summer 2020.

Fire Destroys Home In Allentown Wednesday Night

Fire destroyed a home in northern Santa Rosa County Wednesday night.

The cause of the fire in the 9500 block of Highway 89 in Allentown is under investigation. The occupants reportedly were not home at the time of the blaze.

Allentown, Berrydale, Jay, Skyline, Whiting Field, Pace fire departments, the  Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office and Lifeguard EMS responded.

Boil Water Notice Issued For Cottage Hill Water Works Customers

THIS BOIL WATER NOTICE HAS BEEN RESCINDED AS OF OCTOBER 4.
Cottage Hill Water Works has issued a precautionary boil water notice for the following area: Lakes of Carrington subdivision, Hazzard Lane, Commerce Park and Quintette Road between Lakes of Carrington and Highway 29, along with an residents of Highway 29 that lost water pressure on Wednesday.

Cottage Hill Water said a water main was breached by a road crew, prompting the boil water notice.

Cottage Hill Water Works advises that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or washing dishes be boiled. A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient, or as an alternative bottled water may be used.

This precautionary boil water notice will remain in effect until a bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink.

Northview Names Homecoming Court; Plans Parade And Friday Meal

Northview High School has named their 2019 homecoming court, and there are several big events planned for homecoming.

Homecoming court members are seniors Karlee Criswell, Corteria Leslie, Cloe Smith, Raeleigh Woodfin, Briana White;  juniors Naudia Carach, Franki Daw, Libby Pugh; sophomores Nevaeh Brown, Payton Gilchrist, Mia Starns; and freshmen Presley Dortch, Leila Sanders and McKenna Simmons.

The parade will line up at 12:30 p.m. at Bratt Elementary School. The public should not enter the Bratt campus. The parade will depart at 1 p.m. and travel to Northview High.

A homecoming meal will available Friday from 10 a.m. until from the football concession stand to support the Tommy Weaver Scholarship Fund. Longtime Incumbent Walker Prefiles For District 5 ECUA

Incumbent Larry Walker prefiled as a Republican Thursday for the Emerald Coast Utilities Authorities District 5 for the 2020 Election.

Walker was first elected to the ECUA board in 1988. He ran unsuccessfully for county commission in 2000.
