Northview Crashes South Walton’s Homecoming 53-20

October 12, 2019

If you plan on celebrating a special football night, don’t invite the Northview Chiefs to your house.

The Chiefs crashed homecoming for South Walton 53-20 Friday night. Also this season, they’ve crashed homecoming for Holmes County (34-22) and Senior Night for North Bay Haven (36-25).

Both Northview and South Walton were riding three game winning streaks heading into Friday night.

The Seahawks held a 14-6 lead in the first quarter, but the Chiefs mounted a comeback with a Jayden Jackson touchdown, 14-12. The Seahawks added another TD before Trent Peebles was in to make it 20-18, Seahawks.

In the final seconds of the half, quarterback Ben Wilson had nowhere to throw. He found his way in from 14 yards out time expired in the half. The Chiefs were up 25-20.

“We kind of were playing tight early on but I think all we needed was a defensive stop,” Northview Coach Derek Marshman said. “Once we got that defensive stop and had a little confidence, the defense didn’t give up another touchdown.”

The second half was all Northview, going on to the 53-20 win.

“Second half shutout offensively was offensive line. We had a lot of backs that had a lot of success tonight,” Marshman said. All of our backs were able to run the ball well because of our offensive line. They were the more physical team tonight and it showed.”

Northview (5-2) will be off next Friday night before hitting the road October 25 against the Chipley Tigers (currently 1-6). And by the way, it’s Senior Night for Chipley.

Multiple Injuries, Vehicle Plunges Into Deep Ditch On State Line

October 11, 2019

Firefighters worked over half an hour Thursday evening free an injured woman from vehicle in a deep ditch after a crash that injured multiple people on the state line near Bratt.

Two passenger cars collided at the intersection of North Highway 99 and State Line Road just inches into Florida just before 6:30 p.m. One vehicle was knocked across State Line Road, coming to rest about nine feet down in a ditch in Alabama. As the name implies, State Line Road is the border between Florida and Alabama.

Firefighters from both states worked over half an hour to remove the roof of a car and extricate the woman from the vehicle and the ditch. She was airlifted in serious condition by LifeFlight helicopter to a Pensacola Hospital. A male that was in the vehicle in the ditch was able to crawl out. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance, as were a woman and her child from the second vehicle.

Alabama State Troopers and the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash, and it was determined that FHP would investigate since the original point of impact between the vehicles was in Florida.

The Walnut Hill, Century and McDavid stations of Escambia Fire Rescue, Atmore Fire Department, Escambia County EMS, Atmore Ambulance and the Escambia County (FL) Sheriff’s Office also responded.

Further details have not yet been released.

State Attorney Won’t Charge Century Council With Sunshine Law Violation – For Now

October 11, 2019

The State Attorney’s Office says they won’t pursue a self-admitted Sunshine Law violation by Century – for now.

Shortly after an improperly advertised Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) meeting Monday night, City Manager Buz Eddy said, “We did not advertise that meeting properly.” He said a “timeout should have been called and the meeting should not be held. And that’s what we should have done.” Eddy said the town would advertise another CRA meeting and redo all discussion.

“Because they are making an effort to comply with the Sunshine Law, because they have hired Buz Eddy in management and to advise them on the Sunshine Law, and because they did realize that there was a violation and they are going back and redoing that meeting, we will continue to review and not take any action at this time,” Assistant State Attorney Greg Marcille said Thursday afternoon.

But he also issued a warning of sorts.

“If they continue with violations, we will revisit if we should move forward,” Marcille added.

The town council members sit as the CRA board, with all members taking part in Monday night’s improper meeting except an absent James Smith.
