Woman, 91, Dies In Early Morning House Fire

An early morning house fire claimed the life of an elderly Flomaton woman.
Verda Mae Gandy Abrams, 91, died in the blaze at 65 Tulip Street in Flomaton. The fire was reported at 1:05 a.m. Thursday; the first firefighters on scene minutes later reported the house to be fully involved. Abrams’ body was found in a bedroom located near the front door of the brick home.
Two other people in the home escaped without injury. Their identities were not immediately available. One was believed to be in their 20;s, and the other in their 60’s.
Firefighters were on scene throughout the morning working to full extinguish the blaze. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fatal fire.

Fire departments from Flomaton, Friendship, Lambeth, Century, Atmore, Jay and McDavid responded to the blaze. Escambia County (Fla.) EMS and the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Department also responded.
Tulip Street is a short street between Highway 4A just west of Century and Old Atmore Road west of Flomaton. The fire was about 150 feet inside Alabama.

She’s with Granny Brunson in the loving arms of the Father. I know they’re having a big time there. We’ll see them when we’re done with His plan for us here.
so sad…my prayers go out to the family.
I have cut grass for these people at this house. Her and her son and grandson was some of the nicest people I have ever met. I stood in that house that day and talked to her while she was cooking dinner and she showed me all her pictures on the walls and who they were and what they did. All of the pictures were her family and some of them were very, very, very old pictures. I don’t think she was in the best of health but she is not hurting and more. Bless her heart we will miss her on this side but she is so blessed not to have to deal with the pain and sickness and sorrow and death of this life. We’ll all see her again some day.
God bless this lady sounds like she was a wonderful person. She is walking with the King praising his sweet name in Glory….God Bless U Ms. Verda Mae and may His love and confort be with the family.

I attended church with Ms. Verda Mae at Poplar Dell for many years. She was a sweet woman and was always so happy to be in church. Her church family will definitely miss her, but we know she is with her Savior now. May God bless and comfort her family during this tough time. May God also bless the firefighters who worked so hard this morning.

This is so heartbreaking.. we are definitely praying for this family.. My husband is a local firefighter and I’m so proud of him for what he does, but I hate when he brings bad news home.. Everyone please keep this family in your prayers..
