Northview Gets 49-27 Win Over 5A Arnold; Playoff Bound Next Week (With Gallery)
November 6, 2021
The 1A Northview Chiefs beat 5A Arnold of Panama City Beach 49-27 Friday night in Bratt to close out senior night and the regular season.
The teams battled to a 21-21 tie at end of two, but Northview powered back in the second half outscoring the Marlins 28-6.

“Truthfully, you can’t complain about our offense first half, but I go on to them about defense,” Northview head football coach Wes Summerford said. “I tried to light a fire under them, and it got them going in the second half.”
The Chiefs move into the 1A playoffs next Friday night. The opponent and location won’t be known until Sunday afternoon.
In Class 1A, playoff spots are not determined by district wins; it’s the Rating Percentage Index (RPI). RPI rankings are based upon a mathematical formula based upon a team’s current record, current Winning Percentage (WP), Opponents Winning Percentage (OWP), and their Opponent’s Winning Percentage (OOWP). Basically, beat better teams and rank higher.
The top two teams, which Northview won’t be, will have a bye next week. The bottom four will be in action.
The likely scenario, Summerford believes, has Northview at home against Bozeman or Freeport, but until Sunday’s FHSAA announcement a road trip can’t be ruled out.

Time Change: Fall Back, Replace Smoke Alarm Batteries
November 6, 2021
Don’t forget to “fall back” and set your clocks back one hour night before heading off to bed Saturday night as daylight saving time comes to an end.
It’s time to make another potentially life saving change — replace the batteries in your smoke alarm.
“Most home fire fatalities occur overnight when most families are sleeping,” according to Escambia Fire Rescue. “Changing the batteries in your smoke alarms and performing other maintenance is a simple, effective way to reduce home fire deaths. Children and senior citizens are most at risk and a working smoke alarm can give the extra seconds needed to get out safely.”
In addition to checking smoke alarms, residents should plan “two ways out” and practice escape routes with the entire family. Families should also prepare a fire safety kit that includes working flashlights and fresh batteries.
Each year more than 3,000 people lose their lives in residential fires. The majority of these deaths are a result of unattended cooking. It is strongly recommended that someone always be present when cooking on top of the stove and that smoke alarms be located properly and in working order. Test the smoke alarm monthly and change the batteries at least every six months.

Century Seeks $1.8 Million For New Water Meters, System Interconnects To Central Water Works
November 5, 2021
The Town of Century is seeking nearly $1.8 million in legislative funding for two water projects.
The town is seeking just over $1.3 million to replace all of their existing water meters, moving from a manual read system to a radio reporting system. The funding would be used to purchase new meters, software and hardware for the radio system. Century sought funding for the project from the legislature last year, but was not approved.
The town is also asking for a $493,125 appropriation for two new interconnections between their water system and Central Water Works. Interconnects between the two waters systems would be on Highway 4 near Williams Street and State Line Road. The connections would provide a backup water supply in the event of a failure of some portion of Century’s system. A similar crossover was installed last year between Century’s water system and Central to provide a secondary water source for the Century Correctional Institution, but not the rest of the town.
Escambia County state legislative delegation will hold a public hearing on local request on Tuesday, December 7, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at the Pensacola State College Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio at 1000 College Boulevard in Pensacola.
Pictured: Water flows into the Century Correctional Institution in May 2020 following the failure of a Century water well. A permanent interconnect between the Century and Central water system now provides a backup for the prison, but not the rest of the town.
