Why Not Keep Daylight Saving Time Year Round In Florida?

November 2, 2019

Why are we still falling back and off Daylight Savings Time?

During their 2018 session, the Florida Legislature passed a bill to keep daylight saving time year round that was signed into law by then-governor Rick Scott. But the change ultimately required Congressional approval, which has not happened yet.

Sen. Marco Rubio introduced the Sunshine Protection Act which would make daylight saving time permanent across the entire country.

The legislation, if enacted, would apply to those states who currently participate in DST, which most states observe for eight months out of the year. Standard Time, from November to March, is only observed for four months out of the year. The bill would simply negate the need for Americans to change their clocks twice a year. Many studies have shown that making DST permanent could benefit the economy and the country, according to Rubio.

“Well, it is my hope that Sunday, November 3 will be the last time we have to do this ridiculous changing of the clocks back and forth,” said Rubio. “It makes absolutely no sense, there’s no justification for it. It has strong support in the House and in the Senate, the White House, the president said he would sign it. I hope we can get this bill passed because I just think it makes all the sense in the world, and this changing of the clocks back and forth makes no sense at all.”

“Old timer, I bet you’ve seen a lot of changes in your life.”

“Yup. And I was agin’ ever’ one of ‘em.”

@Timely fashion, I disagree with the illusion of time. Time is my sense applies to durations, measured in seconds and on into years ect. A star is born, burns until it’s hydrogen is exhausted and it dies. The measurement of time is a human construct, but time and space are interconnected in ways that I do not completely understand. Before space, there was no time, but what was the duration of the period for which there was no space? I am not even going to attempt to go into relativity, velocities, gravity and their effects on the passing of time.

Just because there is not a self aware entity to perceive the passing of time, this does not mean that the clock is not ticking. Moreover I believe that God is the only entity that exist outside of time, however I do not understand the dynamics or the mechanics of such.

theres 24 time zones and each originally was about
1038 miles (15 ) degrees across. the earth is spinning
@ about 1038 MPH. The Earth is about 24,902 miles
around @ the Equator. so sunlight is moving( earth spinning)
@ about 1038 mph which would circumnavigate the globe
in 24 hours. all of this was designed by MAN and yet MAN
ain’t satisfied with that and keeps changing things to suit
a minority. Theres almost 8 billion humans on this Earth. i’d
suggest keeping more than two or three of them happy
    (about anything) is a problem!

Time is an illusion, our perception of its flow doesn’t correspond to physical reality. Reality is just a complex network of events onto which we project sequences of past, present and future. Time isn’t real, it’s just a product of our conscientiousness. The government can make the clock be anything they want, who cares.

I like winter time better. I like it getting dark earlier and though I understand that most people like day light savings time, I don’t. I love this time of year, when it cools off, and gets dark early.

  6. Lyn Acosta on November 4th, 2019 6:57 pm

Please keep daylight savings time. It is just horrible to go to work in the dark and not get home until it is dark. I feel like all I am doing is working. I cannot do anything outside after work because it is dark by the time I get home.

I wish we could be in the Eastern Time Zone like the rest of Florida; as well as getting rid of the time change. I used to live on the western edge of the Central Time Zone and I loved how light it stayed in the evenings. I totally understand the reasons why people would not want to be in the Eastern Time Zone (I have a friend that works in Escambia County but lives in Alabama so I totally get that aspect of it) but that it is just how I feel. Personally.

Stop changing the time, next time change leave it permanently.

People could be out an about after work, exercise is important for a out of shape nation

Auto accidents increase, heart attacks increase, changing time messes with everyone’s internal clock even animals that are used to being fed and walked at a certain time. I just love getting home after dark, “not”.

“Well, it is my hope that Sunday, November 3 will be the last time we have to do this ridiculous changing of the clocks back and forth,” said Rubio. “It makes absolutely no sense, there’s no justification for it. As someone that regular does business in Alabama & Florida, it would be a massive headache if Florida eliminated DST unless Alabama did the same. Until Alabama also passes something to eliminate DST, then we need to keep DST in the panhandle.

My dog is used to having her breakfast at 6 am. Now she wakes me at 5 am and wont leave me alone until she gets breakfast at HER 6 am that is now MY 5 am.

In view of the above it seems obvious there is no valid reason to change time twice a year!

  11. Facetious Bob on November 3rd, 2019 11:59 am

    @ Pami Peri -

There are 4 time zones in the contiguous United States. If you count Alaska, Hawaii, and the territories, there are 11 time zones. Who are you leaving out?

  12. shaking my head on November 3rd, 2019 10:19 am

Just leave the freaking clocks alone. Time is time. Been that way since the beginning and people managed to live with it.

    @Pami Peri

Did you attend school? You obviously did not pay attention in science class. The sun does not set at the same time for everyone. SMDH

  13. sam on November 3rd, 2019 9:28 am

i hate this mess. pick one and keep it.

  14. Dave on November 3rd, 2019 8:47 am

Pami perry, you can’t put all states on the
    Same time zone.

  15. MCS on November 3rd, 2019 12:48 am

    Just pick one.
No, I don’t care which one.
    Just pick one already!
Will you PLEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAASE just PICK one!
    JUST! PICK! ONE!!
    What is WRONG with you?

  16. Pami Perry on November 3rd, 2019 12:43 am

I think this would be great for the United States plus all states should be on same time not 3 or 3 hours difference.

  17. Al Buchanan on November 2nd, 2019 9:48 pm

My brother lives in Arizona they don’t have daylight savings time but he said he can see why we do it.

  18. Klondike Kid on November 2nd, 2019 7:39 pm

I’ve said for years all of the US that switches back & forth needs to split the difference 30 minutes & leave it that way permanently. There is absolutely nothing to gain by switching the time an hour twice a year.

  19. Jim Lee on November 2nd, 2019 7:12 pm

Hate DST. Wish they would leave it the old way.

  20. Deborah Heffernan on November 2nd, 2019 7:06 pm

I say we turn back the clocks this time and refuse to change them again. Enough of this nonsense. If the U. S. House is so distracted that it can’t do this one simple thing for all the people, I say we take it upon ourselves to make it happen!!

  21. Kimberley Lee on November 2nd, 2019 6:11 pm

Keeping the time the same all year round let’s families get out and do things with their children after they get home from work. Like grilling playing outdoors are going for picnic. That’s something the people in Congress and the Senate probably don’t do or understand doing. it would be too easy for them to just pass the law! I for one am all for it. When it gets dark so early I feel like it’s been time.

  22. James on November 2nd, 2019 11:18 am

Florida approved this into law, which would have been much easier for Congressional approval than the nationwide bill that Rubio drafted. Rubio chose not to adequately represent his constituents but rather propose a nationwide change so he’d have someone else to point a finger at if it’s not passed. Little Marco repeatedly sells out his Floridian constituents.

  23. Lee on November 2nd, 2019 10:48 am

What happens if we as a state just stop setting our clocks back? Will the federal government send JCVD to kick us into submission?

  24. retired on November 2nd, 2019 9:30 am

congress can waste time on all types of stupid stuff, but can’t take 5-10 to vote on this

  25. CW on November 2nd, 2019 8:46 am

It would sure be nice to get rid of it. It’s so darned hot during the summer that the winter months are the only time I feel like getting outside and doing things, but that’s tough when it gets dark at 5pm.

  26. JT on November 2nd, 2019 8:46 am

The people have spoken with their vote but we have to wait on our “leaders,” that can’t make a decision on anything, to approve something that shouldn’t have anything to do with their approval.

  27. Moe de Lone on November 2nd, 2019 8:35 am

……..and then there was the wise old Native American who said, “This makes as much sense as cutting six inches off the end of a blanket, and sewing it onto the other end to make it longer.”

  28. Bewildered on November 2nd, 2019 8:33 am

Congressional approval? That requires work. What a joke! We might as well be good sheep and turn the clocks back!

  29. mike on November 2nd, 2019 6:27 am

Ben Franklin came up with this so a certain faction got up and at it at the correct time (crack of dawn) without burning too much daylight. :)

  30. Jerald Ballard on November 2nd, 2019 5:48 am

One or the other constant, not switching at all. Switching disrupts our Circadian rhythm, necessary for good sleep habits. Auto and work accidents peak with the time changes.

  31. rance on November 2nd, 2019 4:59 am

yea it’s a real difficult task to move that clock back and forth…Marco Rubio the spring forward/fall back senator.
