13-year-old Charged With Attempted Murder By Arson

March 19, 2018

A young teen has been charged with attempted murder following a fire Saturday near Jay.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fire on Stafford Farm Boulevard off Chumuckla Highway.  The fire was investigated by the Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations, which determined that the garage  fire was intentionally set.
During the course of the investigation, deputies received information that a teen living nearby was involved with setting the fire.

The teen has been identified as 13 year-old Ethan Marsh-Hual.

Marsh-Hual was transported to the Santa Rosa County Jail. He is charged with multiple felonies -  attempted premeditated murder, arson, burglary of an occupied dwelling  and burglary of a  vehicle. He was transported to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice in Pensacola.

A resident of the home reported that he smelled smoke after being awakened by his daughter and found a wall to a garage to be hot. He opened the garage door, observed the fire and emptied a fire extinguisher on it before putting out the fire with a garden hose.

The teen told deputies that he had become friends with an unknown juvenile neighbor not named in an arrest report, and the two had gotten into a fight. The individual allegedly told others at school that he threw up on his mailbox and made fun of him. Marsh-Haul told investigators that he went bed at 10:30 p.m. and set his alarm for midnight. After his alarm went off, he said he went out of his window and lit a propane tank on fire inside the home.

Let’s see if the judge is tough on crime. Probably not.

having your house almost burned down might stop the child from bullying people further i would think

DEW, you must not have kids at Jay. I and several parents have had many discussions regarding the lack of monitoring from the “adults” that are supposed to be teachers and mentors, especially at Jay High School. It’s sad that kids are left in a classroom without “adult” supervision.

@ those who question the charge— how would you feel if the family burned to death. I know that’s second guessing but it can be dropped later. Are it could have been your family and they burned to death. He had given this some thought and acted out in a dumb way.

It is beyond sad that some people – young and old –
do not know how to cope with their emotions
    - except with anger and violence

Certainly what he done is not right and needs to be punished. A lot of times they will charge them with the max under the law. And argue down. BUT NOW AS FAR AS JAY SCHOOLS BEING FULL OF BULLIES THATS HOGWASH. Every school has their share just like JAY. PLUS THE PARENTS HAS A HAND IN THIS AS WELL.
THIS BOY COULD VERY WELL JUST BE USING THE FACT THAT HE HAD BEEN BULLIED AND THATS WHAT CAUSED HIM TO DO IT TO TRY AND GET OUT OF IT UNDER THE HATE CRIME LAW AS A DEFENSE. JUST SAYING.

If I had started a fire every time I got mad when I was thirteen, a few cities would have been burnt to the ground. Thirteen is the worst, confusing age. This kid needs some redirection and I hope he gets help from a caring adult.

Jay schools are notorious for BULLYING! The teachers that used to prevent it have retired and now kids are left with “adults” who play on their computers all day rather than engaging students who need to learn. It’s very sad!

Sounds like he was being made fun of and bullied at school.

Maybe we should ban matches, lighters and propane tanks, and must be 21 to own an alarm clock!!! Right Gov. Scott ?

It sounds like the girl living in the house that he targeted made fun of him in school because he got sick in front of others and he retaliated. What he did to get even was certainly over the top – but the girl’s father should also have a talk with her. Instead of having compassion and understanding when a person is sick she decided to bully him – not a nice girl!

grand locust. Would you feel the same way if it was your home?

Yes, attempted murder is just one more example of overcharging, but this is a 13 year old child who did something very stupid. If I thought filling the prisons with dopes and mopes did anything to protect my family, I would agree with you. However, violent criminals get released on the streets every day while dopers and idiots fill the jails which does nothing to protect any of us. Arson is a felony with very serious consequences if convicted. Attempted murder is without more facts simply one more example of overcharging and a total lack of common sense which beats up taxpayers with full prisons and violent perps walking the streets. Stop it. Enough with the Barney routine and pray for the return of Andy.

We need to come up with more excuses to ensure justice is not done. When i was that age I knew right from wrong and so do these kids today.

He is a child so he gets no help. But if he was an adult drug addict he would get all sorts of help. Maybe he should say he was using drugs.

Something not right here. 13 year olds don’t just do this. Hard to believe this is his first run in with common sense.

Have we lost our collective minds with the overcharging of criminal perps? A felony conviction for arson is going to keep somebody out of the system for a long time, but attempted murder? Must be more facts, or same old…same old. My brother was angry at a neighbor when he was 12 and tipped over their burn barrel. He got chewed out by the fire department when it spread to a field and almost burned a house. No criminal charge, but today…….he would have been charged with attempted murder because in his stupid mind he intentionally knocked the barrel over with the intent of spreading the fire and getting back at another kid. Prison does not get filled with dopes and mopes by accident. It takes overcharging non violent crime, and kids being stupid. In the end the only person getting “burned” are taxpayers. This kid was going away for awhile on a arson charge.
