Pursuit Ends With Fatal Crash After Contraband Tossed Over Prison Fence

October 13, 2016

A pursuit that began at an Atmore prison after contraband was tossed over a fence ended with a fatal crash on I-65.

At 12:05 p.m. on Wednesday, correctional officials at the \ Fountain Correctional Facility in Atmore reported a suspicious vehicle just south of the facility’s barrier fence with two unknown occupants inside.   Officials said the vehicle fled the facility property after a male suspect tossed a package over the fence.

Investigators from the Department of Corrections pursued the vehicle along Alabama 21 and then onto I-65 southbound.  Investigators said the suspects exited the interstate and was struck by a second vehicle.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reports that at 12:40 p.m. the suspects’ vehicle, a 1999 Toyota Avalon, collided with a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer on the off-ramp of I-65 at the intersection of Alabama 59.

Thirty-six-year-old Clint Travis Hunley of Foley, a passenger in the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver is identified as Jody Lynn Mikel, 26, of Trafford.  Mikel was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.  The driver of the Trailblazer was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The package that Hunley allegedly threw over the prison fence contained 25 cell phones, cell phone chargers, and 183 grams of synthetic marijuana.

Mikel was arrested for reckless murder and faces additional charges for prohibited activity on prison property, trafficking a controlled substance, and promoting prison contraband.

Alabama State Troopers are investigating the crash.

I am the sister of Clint Hunley. He was a drug addict, indeed. However, no one deserves to die. He was a son, father, brother and friend. He believed in God even when he didn’t believe in himself. Please be respectful of his 12 year old who may one day read your comments. Don’t throw stones from the window of a glass house. This could very well be a family member of yours one day. No one is exempt from having an addict in their family.
God bless all of you. Just remember, life is a precious gift. Words hurt. Actions hurt.
    Live wisely and honestly.
No matter how much you try to change someone you love, unless they themselves want to change, it will never happen.
    Please be kind.

@anne….that “poor young lady” probably shouldn’t be behind the wheel of a car if she doesn’t have the capability of being aware of her surroundings. Who, in their right mind, would drive up to a prison barrier fence? What were you going to do there? What happened, did reality click in when he tossed the package, which caused her to take off? It seems more likely that she would be participating in this to get/keep his attention. Now there is where I would say poor young lady.

This one should be fun. All the lady did was drive the Toyota. She had no idea what was in that package. So, she is guilty of reckless driving I actually feel sorry for the court appointed Attorney.

@seriously, if the deceased male was such a son, father, friend to people, maybe he should have had enough respect for them to change his ways and act like a decent human being. HE chose his way of life(unless maybe it’s a family tradition?) and only HE could change it. Nobody is born a thief, liar, murderer, or anything else. Those traits are learned and sometimes through the desperation they have, get even worse with time. I stand again in saying that while his death may be tragic to some, it still shows some sort of poetic justice and I’m glad my tax dollars won’t have to feed him for the duration of his stay in a correctional facility, only to have him return at some point.

    @ Michael,

My choices got me where I am today, and their choices put them where they are today: Dead/In jail.

They are suffering the natural consequences of their own stupidity. Introducing contraband into a correctional facility endangers the lives of the staff and inmates who are not involved in the trafficking. That synthetic MJ causes a lot of hallucinatory behavior and violent outbursts in some people – I’ve seen it first hand where I work.

    Make SMART choices.

    @Michael

Wow, easy money turned into death for that guy Hunley. I wonder why he did not do the driving.

What was all the activity about this morning about 6:45? Blue lights at the gate leading to Holman, blue lights down the road, 2 state trucks at the top of the hill, and a Atmore PD car across the street from the gas station next to the college.

THIS is exactly why Alabama needs a felony murder law!

Hunley got justice. Mikel should get life in prison. Hope the driver of the Chevy recovers quickly.

    …AMEN WILLEY..NUFF SAID..

  14. Seriously? on October 13th, 2016 3:21 pm

Are you serious? Do you realize that in spite of these two individuals appalling behavior that the male was the son, brother, father, etc to someone and that they are now dead and that they will never see them again. Since when are any of their crimes punishable by death. Unbelievable how cold and heartless humans can be.

Im glad the other man is going to be fine and glad the female survived to do her jail time albeit on mine and other tax payers dime.

  15. willy on October 13th, 2016 2:52 pm

Glad the innocent person involved in the accident will recover fine. As for the others, it might sound harsh but there is some good poetic justice going on with this. Sadly, we’ll have to foot the bill for the one that survived. The other one saved us the trouble.

The prison guards need to realize they are not patrol officers and they need to be held accountable for their actions
