Hurricane Ian Moves North With Increasing Winds

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Cuba early Tuesday morning as a Category 3 storm with winds of 125 mph. It will continue to strengthen as it moves toward the Gulf of Mexico.
Confidence continues to grow that Ian will move east of our area in the direction of the Florida west coast. High surf and maybe some gusty winds will still be possible at the local beaches.

A red flag warning is in effect. A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Outdoor burning should be avoided.

Ian Strengthens, Track Shifts Further East

The forecast for Ian shifted back east on Sunday. The storm is forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico in the coming days.
“Confidence is very slowly increasing in a track east of our area; however, we still need to monitor this closely as changes can still occur,” National Weather Service forecasters in Mobile said Sunday night.
But NWS Mobile said very small changes now can lead to bigger changes in the forecast.
High surf is still likely and dangerous rip currents will be a hazard through the weekend along Escambia County’s beaches.

The forecast for Ian shifted west on Saturday. The storm will turn more northerly over the next few days as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico
lan is heading into a very favorable environment for it to rapidly intensify, and it should be a major hurricane by Monday night or early Tuesday. There remains a large amount of uncertainty in the forecast for Tuesday afternoon and beyond, so further adjustments to the track are possible.
According to the National Weather Service office in Mobile, it is too early to let your guard down locally.
