Individual Receiving Rabies Shots After Contact With Bat At Escambia County Park

July 23, 2021

The Florida Department of Health in Escambia County (FDOH-Escambia) is urging residents to avoid contact with wild and stray animals to protect themselves from the risk of rabies exposure after someone had “contact” with a bat at a county park.

On July 18, 2021, an individual had contact with a bat while visiting Perdido Kids Park, according to the health department. The individual is receiving the rabies vaccine for the bat exposure as a precautionary measure.

The health department said it is possible that other unknown individuals may have also come in contact with this animal. Anyone who may have come into contact with a bat’s mouth or claws in this area should seek medical care and consult FDOH-Escambia at (850) 595-6700 extension 2028.

Without proper treatment, rabies can cause brain infection and death. Rabies is transmitted by a rabid animal by a bite, a scratch, or by contact with mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose, or mouth. A series of “rabies shots” can protect a bite victim from developing the rabies infection, if given soon after the bite occurs.

An animal with rabies may appear sick or lethargic, have problems swallowing, or drool or salivate excessively. A wild animal may appear tamer than usual and some animals may have no visible symptoms.

In Florida, raccoons, foxes, bats, and cats are the animals most frequently diagnosed with rabies. Other animals that are at high risk for rabies include dogs, bobcats, skunks, and otters. Because of their proximity to people, stray and unvaccinated cats and dogs pose a special risk.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautions:

Vaccinate pets against rabies and keep vaccinations up to date.
Keep pets under direct supervision so they do not come into contact with wild animals.
If a pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary assistance for the animal immediately.
Call animal control services to remove any stray animals from your neighborhood.
Bring in pet food at night and secure trash cans with fasteners, or place trash containers in the garage, so they do not attract wild or stray animals.
Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home.
Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly.
Prevent bats from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, churches, schools, and other similar areas, where they might come in contact with people and pets.

FDOH-Escambia’s Environmental Health division investigates animal bite reports, tests animals for rabies through the state laboratory, and orders animal quarantine as necessary.

Biscuits Power Past Blue Wahoos 5-3 Thursday

July 23, 2021

Despite a late push from the Wahoos, Pensacola couldn’t surmount a four-run deficit and lost to the Biscuits 5-3 on Wednesday night at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium.

Jake Eder (L, 3-4) tied his career high with four runs allowed in 4.1 innings of work. The left hander breezed through the first couple of innings but ran into trouble in the third.

After a pair of walks in the third, Xavier Edwards grounded a double inside the third-base line for a two-run double to put Montgomery ahead 2-0. After the Biscuits tacked on another run in the fourth, Eder gave up a double to Edwards prior to being lifted from the game in favor of Andrew McInvale. Unfortunately for the Wahoos, McInvale surrended a two-run homer on an 0-2 pitch to Jonathan Aranda, which gave the Biscuits a 5-0 lead.

Pensacola chipped away against the Biscuits in the second half of the contest. Nick Fortes lined an RBI double to left to put Pensacola on the board in the sixth.

In the seventh, after a J.D. Osborne single, Riley Mahan hit his second of two doubles to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Pensacola used a couple of productive RBI outs to bring home both runners and cut the deficit to 5-3.

In the eighth, JJ Bleday led off the inning with a double to deep right; however, the offense came to a stop shortly after as the Wahoos could not bring him home in the frame. Joel Peguero (S, 1) then retired the Wahoos in order in the ninth to close out the game.

The fourth game of the series begins on Friday at 6:35 PM CT. RHP Zach McCambley (0-1, 5.79) will make his third career Double-A start for the Wahoos. He will be opposed by the combination of LHP Kenny Rosenberg and RHP Adrian De Horta.

ECUA Recyclables Going Into The Landfill After Facility Fire; Customers Encouraged To Stay In Recycling Habit

July 22, 2021

Recyclables in Escambia County are going into the landfill following a recycling facility fire last week, but the Emerald Coast Utility Authority is encouraging residents to stay in the recycling habit.

The fire, possibly sparked by a propane tank or a battery, appeared to have originated in a chute in the metal sorting area the afternoon of July 15 at ECUA’s Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) located at the Perdido Landfill in Beulah.

“In addition to the fire damage, there is also a lot of water damage to materials and electrical systems,” ECUA Public Information Officer Nathalie Bowers told NorthEscambia.com Wednesday afternoon. She said the recyclables still being collected are being landfilled because there is simply to place to store them until the facility is back up and running.

“ECUA maintenance crews and contractors are working diligently to clean up and repair the areas that were damaged by the fire in order to bring MRF operations back as soon as possible. Meanwhile, we are continuing normal recycling collections and urge our customers to keep in the positive recycling habit,” Bowers said.

ECUA has also put the brakes on recyclables normally processed at the MRF from other cities, counties and commercial entities.

Bowers also praised MRF staff for their quick actions to save machine such as backhoes from the building, along with Escambia Fire Rescue personnel that responded.
