Suspect Rams Patrol Car During Nine Mile Traffic Stop

At least one person was taken into custody after a suspect rammed a patrol car on Nine Mile Road Thursday afternoon.

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Nine Mile Road and Fowler Avenue. FHP said they were assisting the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office in conducting the traffic stop.

According to the ECSO, the suspect was a convicted felon. They said drugs including fentanyl and guns were in the vehicle.

The name of the suspect and other details were not yet available early Friday morning.

Arbor Day Tree Giveaway January 21 At Three Library Locations

UF IFAS Extension/Escambia County will hold three simultaneous tree giveaways later this month in celebration of Florida’s Arbor Day.

The tree giveaways will take place from 10 a.m. until noon (or while supplies last) on Saturday January 21 at the Molino, Bellview and Tryon branches of the West Florida Regional Libraries.

Each Escambia County household represented will receive two free native trees. Species available include live oak, dahoon holly, mayhaw, and Walter’s viburnum. Funding for the tree giveaways is provided by Escambia County Natural Resources Management Department and International Paper, with volunteer support from Our Corner (formerly Keep Pensacola Beautiful), the Florida Forest Service, and Escambia County Master Gardeners.

Escambia County Extension will also host their 7th annual Arbor Day Art Contest this year. To participate, mail a drawing, painting, photograph, or mixed media artwork with the theme, “A Walk in the Woods” to Arbor Day Art Contest c/o Escambia County Extension, 3740 Stefani Road, Cantonment, FL 32533. Please include your name, age, and contact information on the back of your artwork. Contest entries must arrive by mail or be dropped off by January 18.

First place winners of the art contest will receive prizes including a tree, shovel, and book. Second place winners will receive a book, and third place winners will receive gardening supplies. Categories include children (12-under), teen (13-18), and adult (over 18). Winners will be announced on Friday, January 20, and prizes given out by appointment. Resource Management Services provides support for the art contest.

The Christmas and New Year’s break is coming to an end for students and teachers in Escambia County.

Teachers will be back in school today, January 4, for a non-student day. Students will return to class on Thursday, January 5.

The main threats are damaging straight line winds up to 60 mph, tornadoes (a few could be strong), and large hail.

Deadline Is Today For Discount On Real Estate, Tangible Property Taxes

A 3% discount on payment of real estate and tangible personal property taxes ends Saturday, December 31, according to Escambia County Tax Collector Scott Lunsford.

To receive the 3% discount, payments must be:

  • mailed with a December postmark;
  • left by midnight, December 31 in a 24-hour drop box available at all locations; or
  • made online by midnight, December 31, at EscambiaTaxCollector.com.

Taxpayers are encouraged to visit the virtual office at EscambiaTaxCollector.com to pay online 24 hours a day. Online services allow customers to pay their taxes, search records, print receipts, renew vehicle and vessel registrations and many other services. There is no additional fee to pay current taxes by eCheck. Customers who decide to visit tax collector offices can drop off their payment in the drive thru or in a drop box.
