Myers Homers In Wahoos 4-0 Win Over Braves

Dane Myers hit an inside-the-park home run to start off a fun Friday night for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, who defeated the Mississippi Braves 4-0 for their second win in a row.
Myers circled the bases in the first after his sinking liner got past diving Braves center fielder Jacob Pearson. It was just the fifth inside-the-parker in team history, and the first since Ivan De Jesus Jr. in 2019.
Evan Fitterer (W, 4-1) worked the first 5.2 innings of a four-hit shutout for the Blue Wahoos. The righty worked out of trouble in every inning, and got help from relievers Austin Roberts and Josan Méndez to complete the scoreless game.
Alan Rangel (L, 1-4) took the tough-luck loss for Mississippi, allowing only the Myers homer in 5.0 innings of work. The Blue Wahoos added some insurance with a three-run eighth, as Cody Morissette and Griffin Conine punched RBI singles past a drawn-in infield.
Norel González was 3-for-4 with a double, and José Devers finished 2-for-4 with a triple, stolen base and impressive double play on the defensive side with a diving stop at third base.
The Blue Wahoos gained a game in the standings, and are now 6.0 games clear of second place Montgomery and Biloxi in the South Division with 26 games to play in the first half.
The Blue Wahoos continue their series against the Braves on Saturday in Mississippi.

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Nets 190,853 Pounds Locally

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive two weeks ago collected 190,853 pounds locally.
The food was donated to food banks in Northwest Florida, providing the equivalent of 219,862 meals.
The May 13 event marked the 31st year for the National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive – the largest, national, single-day effort to put food on the table for millions of Americans.
Escambia and Santa Rosa letter carriers collected food donations that will benefit individuals and families served by Manna Food Pantries, Feeding the Gulf Coast, ACTS Ministries, We Care Ministries, and Warrington Emergency Aid Center.
ECSO Hosts Free Movie Night In Beulah

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office hosted free movie night Friday evening at the Escambia County Equestrian Center in Beulah.
Free hotdogs and hamburgers were available before the showing of “Onward”.

Tate High Class Of 2023 Graduates (With Complete Graduate List, Gallery)

Over 400 members of the Tate High School Class of 2023 graduated Thursday morning at the Pensacola Bay Center.
Valedictorian of the Class of 2023 is Chloe Elizabeth Cole; salutatorian is Rebekah Lynn Kelly.
“The measure of success is based on the happiness and joy you wake up with, and the feeling of passion you have while doing what you do whether it’s work or school,” Cole said. “When working to accomplish your future goals, make sure you’re living with purpose, and when you obtain your goals know that you truly succeeded. Class of 2023, live a life with purpose from here on out.”
Collectively, the Tate High School Class of 2023 earned $5.1 million in scholarships and performed 14,600 hours of community service. Thirty-one percent of the class has a GPA of 4.0 or higher.

Northview High Class Of 2023 Graduates (With Complete Graduate List, Gallery)

The Northview High School Class of 2023 graduated Thursday afternoon at the Pensacola Bay Center.
Valedictorian of the Class of 2023 is Drake Allen Driskell , and salutatorian is Blake Richard Yoder.

“His greatest gift of all is, He has called us to wake each and every morning for as long as we can remember,” Driskell said after thanking God. “We often take that for granted; none of us are guaranteed tomorrow. None of us even know if we will make it through today. We were given a solid reminder that in the early morning hours of Friday, March 17.”
On that morning, class member Kara Elizabeth Santorelli was killed in a wreck near Molino.
“We continue to mourn for Kara,” he said. “We must not be saddened by the fragility of our lives. We know that today could be our last but that does not mean we should live, like there is no tomorrow.”
“God has entrusted various different callings and gifts among those present here today. But it is our job to do with those talents what He intended us to do,” Driskell added.
The graduation ceremony paused for a moment of silence for Santorelli before diplomas were presented. Her diploma along with a cap, gown and Class of 2023 tassel were in a shadow box placed on a chair with the graduates.
Principal Mike Sherrill said in the Class of 2023, there was one senior with a GPA greater than 5.0 and 26 with a 4.0 GPA or higher. Collectively, the class earned over $1.7 million in scholarships.

Authorities Searching For Missing Century Woman Last Seen In Flomaton
May 26, 2023
Authorities are searching for a 33-year old Century woman last seen three months ago in Flomaton.
Britton Leigh Baisden left the Flomaton area on March 23 and has not been seen since, according to information just released. Her direction of travel was not known.
The Flomaton Police Department said she lives in Century but was known to frequently travel through Flomaton.
Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to the Flomaton Police Department at (251) 296-5811 or their local law enforcement agency.

NOAA Predicts A Near Normal 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season

NOAA forecasters with the Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service, predict near-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic this year.
NOAA’s outlook for the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, which goes from June 1 to November 30, predicts a 40% chance of a near-normal season, a 30% chance of an above-normal season and a 30% chance of a below-normal season.
The upcoming Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be less active than recent years, due to competing factors — some that suppress storm development and some that fuel it — driving this year’s overall forecast for a near-normal season.
After three hurricane seasons with La Nina present, NOAA scientists predict a high potential for El Nino to develop this summer, which can suppress Atlantic hurricane activity. El Nino’s potential influence on storm development could be offset by favorable conditions local to the tropical Atlantic Basin.
NOAA is forecasting a range of 12 to 17 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 5 to 9 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 1 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA has a 70% confidence in these ranges.
“As we saw with Hurricane Ian, it only takes one hurricane to cause widespread devastation and upend lives. So regardless of the number of storms predicted this season, it is critical that everyone understand their risk and heed the warnings of state and local officials. Whether you live on the coast or further inland, hurricanes can cause serious impacts to everybody in their path,” said FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell.

Ms. Tara Ann Bryan, age 38, passed away, Sunday, May 22, 2023. Tara was born on October 1, 1984, in Foley, AL; to Anthony Bryan, of Atmore, AL; and Lynn Dextras, of Foley, AL.
She loved doing her makeup and hanging out with her friends. She would always start her conversations with “Well how have you been doing” and end them with “I love you”.
She is survived by her son, Cameran Bryan, and her parents, Anthony Bryan and Lynn Dextras. She is also survived by her siblings, Brittany Bryan, Corey Bryan, Tiffany (Colton) Bowen, Ashton Nelson (Brady Rolin), Alexandria (Austin) Lassiter as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Tara will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC. with Bro. Tony Sells and Daphne Fretwell officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2023, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Petty- Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Colton Bowen, Brady Rolin, Peter Earl Patterson, Chase Jaye, Joey Barber, and Kemariyuan McCaster.
DeSantis Signs Bill With Expanded Sales Tax Holiday, Permanent Exemption For Baby Products

Thursday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed what he says in the largest tax relief plan in Florida’s history, providing Florida families with $2.7 billion in tax relief during the 2023–2024 fiscal year. The tax relief package includes a permanent exemption for baby and toddler necessities such as strollers, cribs, diapers, and baby wipes. Additionally, the tax relief package includes two back-to-school sales tax holidays lasting 14 days each, two disaster preparedness sales tax holidays lasting 14 days each, and a freedom summer sales tax holiday on recreational items and children’s toys that will last from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Permanent sales tax exemptions included in the tax relief package will save Florida families nearly $234 million. Those exemptions are targeted to cover baby and toddler needs like cribs, playpens, strollers, child safety products, diapers, baby wipes, bottles, and clothing and shoes for children under age 5. Other items permanently exempt from sales tax will include oral hygiene products like toothbrushes and toothpaste and firearm safety devices.
- Sales tax holidays included in the tax relief package for the 2023–2024 fiscal year:
- Back-to-School sales tax holidays will take place July 24 – August 6, 2023, and January 1 – January 14, 2024.
- Disaster Preparedness sales tax holidays will take place May 27 – June 9, 2023, and August 26 – September 8, 2023.
- The Freedom Summer sales tax holiday lasts from Memorial Day through Labor Day of this year.
- The Tools and Equipment sales tax holiday will take place from September 2 – September 8, 2023.
Additionally, the tax relief package includes a one-year sales tax exemption on gas stoves and Energy Star appliances. There will also be a reduction in the tax rate on business rent from the current 5.5% down to 4.5% effective December 1, 2023, to help small businesses keep more of their profits.
“Because of President Biden’s disastrous economic policies, Florida families are feeling the pressure of inflation on their wallets,” said DeSantis. “But in Florida, we are ensuring that our state’s economic success gets passed on to the people that made it possible. I will continue to push smart fiscal policy that will allow Florida families to keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets. Stronger families make a stronger Florida.”
