Blue Wahoos Beat The B’ham Barons

Peyton Burdick homered twice on Friday and Jake Eder (W, 3-2) turned in his third quality start as the Wahoos defeated the Barons 6-1 at Regions Field.
The Wahoos got off to a roaring start against Jason Bilous (L, 0-1) in the top of the first. Demetrius Sims led off the game with a double to left before Burdick uncorked a no-doubter to left to put the Wahoos up 2-0, two batters in. It looked like the Wahoos might add more as the next two batters for Pensacola reached safely against Bilous.
However, the Barons starter recovered after a mound visit from pitching coach Rich Dotson, and he retired the side to limit the first inning damage to just two runs.
Two runs would’ve been plenty for Eder, who dazzled from the very beginning. The left hander had at least one strikeout in every inning except for the fourth, and retired the side in order in three separate innings.
Where Eder ran into trouble was in the bottom of the fifth. After a one-out double from Mitch Roman, Joel Booker roped an RBI single to cut the Wahoos lead at the time down to 3-1. After the base hit, Eder elevated his performance by striking out Romy Gonzalez and Zack Granite. In his outing, Eder held the Barons top three hitters (Gonzalez, Granite, and Micker Adolfo) hitless (0-for-9) with eight strikeouts.
With the Wahoos leading 3-1, Pensacola doubled their lead with homers in the seventh. Burdick led off the inning with a solo shot to left off Jake Elliot, making him the second Wahoos homer, JJ Bleday walked before Encarnacion homered off Elliot, which gave the Wahoos a 6-1 lead.
Zach Wolf and Alberto Guerrero made sure there would not be a third walk-off win in a row for the Barons. Wolf turned in two scoreless inning in which he walked two and struck out one. Guerrero allowed a couple of hits to start the bottom of the ninth; however, he struck out two before inducing a roundball fielder’s choice to end the game.
With the win, the Wahoos remain tied with the Mississippi Braves for the best record in the Double-A South.
Game five of the series continues tomorrow night in Birmingham. RHP Jeff Lindgren (2-3, 4.32) will make his ninth appearance of the year r for the Wahoos and he will be opposed by RHP Kade McClure (1-3, 5.10).
‘Donut Strike’ For Manna Food Pantries Going On This Afternoon

Law enforcement agencies and fire departments in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties are on strike from doughnuts through this afternoon as they collect food for Manna.

No Serious Injuries In Oak Grove Crash

There were no serious injuries in a two vehicle crash Friday morning in Oak Grove.
Two passenger cars collided at the intersection of North Highway 99 and Highway 164 about 11 a.m. Everyone involved refused transport to the hospital.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating. The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County EMS and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded.

Investigators, Family Members Seek Answers After Man Found Seriously Beaten In Century Bar Parking Lot

Family members say a 60-year old Century man remains in a coma after being beat in the parking lot of a Century bar last Saturday night, and they are hoping someone will come forward with information.
About 10 p.m., the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a man down call in the parking lot of Odom’s Bar on North Century Boulevard at the state line. They arrived to find the victim in the parking lot.
Witnesses told deputies Saturday night that Hunter was seen involved in a “shoving match” in the parking lot, but he did not appeared injured. The witness went inside the bar, and when they went back outside, they found Greg Hunter unconscious and bleeding, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
A family member told NorthEscambia.com that Hunter remains in critical condition, and they want justice.

Health Department Expands COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic Hours

The Florida Department of Health in Escambia County has expanded hours for their walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinic.
The clinic is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at 1295 West Fairfield Drive.

Repairs Continue On District 5 Roads Damaged By Tropical Storm Claudette’s Heavy Rain

Escambia County is continuing to repair District 5 roads washed away last weekend during heavy rains from Tropical Storm Claudette.
Thursday afternoon, Interim County Administrator Wes Moreno provided NorthEscambia.com with the following updates:
Rigby Road in Bratt was closed Saturday at the bridge over Beaver Dam Creek, just south of West Highway 4, after the roadway approach washed away. Repairs are expected to be complete Friday; both the road and bridge are open.
Greenland Road in Davisville suffered major erosion of the road shoulder Saturday at a culvert on Pine Barren Creek. The roadside on the downstream side of Greenland Road washed away both east and west of the creek. Repairs are expected to be completed Friday. Greenland Road remains open.
Devine Farm Road suffered major erosion by a bridge over a branch of 11 Mile Creek, washing the dirt away under a portion of roadway. Repair work is underway.
In District 3 Rolling Hills Road washed away Saturday, leaving several home isolated. County crews worded from 2 a.m. until 11 p.m. Sunday to make repairs.

Century To Discuss Upcoming Fiscal Year Budget At Three Workshop Meetings

The Town of Century has schedule three workshops to discuss their budget for the next fiscal year.
The workshops will be held at the Century Town Hall at 5:30 p.m. on July 29, August 5 and August 6.
Century’s next fiscal year begins October 1. Their current yearly budget is $4.14 million.
Pensacola Beach Fishing Pier Will Reopen Saturday Following Temporary Repairs

The Pensacola Beach Fishing Pier on Casino Beach will reopen to the public on Saturday at 6 a.m. The pier will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The 1,471-foot Gulf-side fishing pier was significantly damaged from Hurricane Sally last September and has been closed while the county worked with FEMA. After an onsite meeting with FEMA representatives, the county received approval to move forward with temporary repairs in June, and those repairs are now complete.
“I’d like to thank Escambia County public works and parks and recreation personnel for working so quickly to make these temporary repairs once we received approval from FEMA to move forward,” said Chairman and District 4 County Commissioner Robert Bender. “With the Pensacola Bay Bridge recently reopening, I’m ecstatic that there is easier access to this amenity for folks to enjoy on Pensacola Beach.”
Curtis Edward “Bobo” Beck, Sr.

Curtis Edward Beck, Sr. passed away on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at the age of 79. Curtis was born in Atmore, Alabama on July 2, 1941 to the late Charles Elmer Beck and Bertie Evelyn Freeman Beck.
He served a period of time in the Army, later working as a machinist and as a maintenance supervisor for Mobil Offshore. Curtis enjoyed riding motorcycles and traveling local and abroad.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bertie Beck; sister, Evelyn Hill; and brother, Bobby Beck.
Curtis is survived by his daughter, Marie (Jason) Henson; sons, Curtis (Susan) Beck, Jr and Brandon Beck; brothers, Charles (Gleide) Beck and Bill Beck; nieces, Lori, Angela Haber and Hannah Beck; nephews, Aubrey Hill, Randy, Mike and Vincent Beck, Charles Leonard Beck; and numerous grandchildren, great nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Randy Beck, Mike Beck, Bill Beck, Ronnie Grimes, Bryan, and Billy Pavliaris.
Funeral services were held at 2PM, Monday, June 21, 2021 at Faith Chapel North.
