Northview And Tate Fall In District Volleyball Tournament Play

Both Northview and Tate fell in district volleyball tournament play Tuesday.
In 6A District 1, Gulf Breeze defeated Tate in three straight, 25-17, 25-11, 25-9. Navarre will be at Gulf Breeze Thursday night for the district championship
The Aggies finished their season at 13-14 overall.
In 1A District 1, Baker beat Northview in three straight, 25-6, 25-17, 25-11.
Jay defeated Central 3-2 to advance to the district championship Thursday night against Baker.
Northview’s season ended at 6-11.

No. 9 UWF Flies Past Shorter, 50-26, For 13th Consecutive Road Win

Peewee Jarrett had 287 yards of total offense and David Durden finished with 111 receiving yards as ninth-ranked UWF defeated Shorter, 50-26, at Historic Barron Stadium on Saturday.
Jarrett did a little bit of everything for UWF (5-1, 3-1 Gulf South) as he completed 18-of-29 for 189 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 98 yards on six carries and another score. His rushing total was a UWF record for a quarterback.
The Argonauts scored on eight of their 11 possessions, with one of the two punts directly leading to a safety.
Durden had his third 100-yard game in the last four and opened the scoring, returning a punt 58 yards following a 3-and-out by Shorter. He also caught a career-high-tying nine passes.
Following a Hawks punt on the next possession, Jarrett led an 80-yard drive that saw him complete four-consecutive passes after a Shomari Mason run to put UWF at the 12. Two plays later he finished off the drive with a 12-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead.
Shorter got on the scoreboard early in the second with a 24-yard Nicholas Pope field goal, before UWF’s Griffin Cerra made a 24-yarder to send the teams into the locker room with a 17-3 Argo lead.
Cerra added a 27-yarder on the opening possession of the third quarter to extend the lead to 20-3. Another 3-and-out gave UWF the ball 55 yards from paydirt. Jarrett ended the 8-play march with consecutive completions to Durden, including a 13-yard slant into the end zone for a 27-3 advantage.
Shorter got a score back near the end of the third when Aeneas Dennis completed a 10-yard pass to Trevon Dirden.
Then the teams started lighting up the scoreboard in the final 15 minutes.
Tra’quan McNair got to Dennis in the end zone and forced the Hawk to intentionally ground the ball for a safety. UWF took the next possession on the free kick and had excellent field position when Da’quan Bailey-Brown returned it 45 yards to the Shorter 30. From there, Jarrett broke off a 25-yard scamper and Shomari Mason went in untouched from the 10 for a 36-10 lead.
The Argos added a pair of touchdowns from C.J. Wilson, including a 40-yarder that pushed the margin to 50-18.
UWF outgained Shorter 441-335 and continued its balanced attack, running for 222 and passing for 219.
The Argos will return to Pen Air Field for the next two weeks, starting next Saturday, Oct. 22 against Mississippi College (4-3, 3-1) at 4 p.m.

Northview Rolls To 7-0 With 49-13 Win Over Jay (With Photo Gallery)

Maybe there’s just something about the number 49.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Northview Chiefs scored 49 points Friday night as they beat Jay 49-13.

With the win, the Chiefs rolled to 7-0. But the win wasn’t as straightforward was NHS head coach Wes Summerford would like to see.
“It wasn’t a pretty one for us. We just didn’t execute well,” Summerford said. “The penalties hurt us on offense, and we’ve got to start faster on defense. When you get up in the playoffs, you’ve got to come out ready to play. Our kids know that. We’ve just got to preach that message; I think you’ve got to practice that way.”
The Chiefs were first on the board at a packed Merle North Stadium in Jay with a 2-yard dash from Jamarkus Jefferson with just over nine minutes to go in the first quarter, 7-0 Northview. Jefferson added another TD in the first, 14-0.
Northview led 21-7 at the half after another Jefferson touchdown.
Maliki Haynes had a big second half endzone interception in the second half, setting momentum for the Chiefs.
“Everytime after the first half we come out, we get a big stop and then the ball game really ends at that point,” he said. “That’s how big that momentum is…we lit a little fire under our kids at halftime and got them going.”
Northview quarterback Kaden Odom found Aiden Broadhead for a 40-yard touchdown in the third quarter, 28-7. Luke Bridges was in from 8-yards out to give the Chiefs a 35-7 advantage.
The Chiefs expanded their lead to 42-7 with a 16-yard touchdown from Wyatt Scruggs.
The Royals added one more touchdown from 38-yards out when Hayden Morris connected with Tomas Ravendo. With a missed kick, it was 42-13.
Jefferson scored his fourth touchdown on a one-yard run to seal the 49-7 win.
Northview will defend their perfect record on the road next Friday night at Marianna (1-6). They will round out the season at home against Escambia County of Atmore (currently 4-4) on October 28 and Bay (currently 6-1) on November 4.

Tate Falls To Pace (With Photo Gallery)

The Tate Aggies fell on the road at Pace Friday night, 38-9.
Tate was first on the board with a 29-yard field goal from Caleb Westergreen for a 3-0 lead.
Down 7-3, the Aggies scored again on a Taite Davis to Diego Dukes with a 14-yard pass.
The Aggies (1-6) will host Gulf Breeze (4-3) next Friday night.

The Washington Wildcats defeated the Tate Aggies Tuesday night in a “Dig Pink” game to support the Side-Out Foundation and their metastatic breast cancer research.
Washington won 3-1 over Tate, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24, 25-19.
The Tate Aggies (11-13, 2-4) will round out the regular season at Escambia on Thursday, and Washington (14-7, 4-0) will be at Pace.

Tate Volleyball Hosting Dig Pink Event Tuesday To Support Breast Cancer Research

Tate High School Volleyball will host a Dig Pink event Tuesday to support the Side-Out Foundation.
The Side-Out dedicates the majority of donations to their own metastatic breast cancer research. In addition to research, Side-Out allocates a portion of their funds to high-quality support services for cancer patients and their families, as well as college scholarships for students.
Tate will host Washington with the freshmen beginning at 4:30, junior varsity at 5:30 and varsity at 6:30. All Tate students who wear pink will get in free.

Tenth-Ranked Argos Right At Home As They Run Together Past UWG

Adding to its trend of gems, UWF’s football team continues feeling right at home on the road.
The 10th-ranked Argos seized control of a tied game midway through the third quarter, then overpowered conference rival West Georgia 42-28 Saturday night for their 12th consecutive road victory – a streak that now spans three seasons.
It’s the nation’s second longest in Division II, another part of the Argos’ mantle of feats in their six-year history. The Argos big win also continued an uncanny element of this contentious series, where the visiting team has won each time.
In fact, UWF is now 4-0 at West Georgia’s University Stadium when factoring the Argos upset playoff win in 2017 en route to reaching the NCAA D-2 national title game that season.
The latest win put the Argos at 4-1, 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference, tied with West Alabama (4-2, 2-1) in the conference standings, following UWA’s upset win Saturday at Valdosta State. UWF faces another road trip next Saturday to play Shorter (2-4, 0-3).
On this night, UWF smoothed out its performance from a rocky first half.
Quarterback Peewee Jarrett committed three turnovers in the game’s first 25 minutes, including a pair of interceptions – one of which UWG turned into a touchdown drive – plus a fumble he lost at the Wolves 21.
But the transfer junior was dynamite in the second half.
He passed for 120 yards and two scores, plus rushed for 43 of his 71 yards in the game on a game-sealing drive late in the fourth quarter. He also scored a rushing touchdown late in the second quarter.
“He was on fire,” said UWF coach Pete Shinnick. “He took (first half troubles) personal. We want the ball in his hands. Our offense I think is very close to just taking this thing to the next level.”
After Jarrett had a two-yard run to the UWG 21 late with less than two minutes remaining, which forced a final time out from West Georgia, the Argos faced a 3rd-and-9 play. In a defining moment, UWF’s offensive line opened up a mass passageway on the left side that Shomari Mason raced through for a game-sealing touchdown with 1:42 remaining.
On that play, Mason became UWF’s all-time, career rushing leader with 2,016 yards, breaking the mark set by Chris Schwarz (1,992) during UWF’s first three seasons (2016-18). Mason’s two TDs Saturday gave him a school record 21 rushing scores in his career, pushing him past Anthony Johnson Jr., a Pace High grad, who amassed 20 in four seasons (2017-19 and 2021).
Mason is already the UWF record holder for most overall touchdowns, now with 23.
His first touchdown Saturday was a game-changer.
Coming out of halftime with the scored tied 14-14, the Wolves got the ball to start the third quarter. On a second down play, UWF linebacker Gael Laurent stripped the ball from West Georgia quarterback Harrison Frost. The Argos Aidan Swett recovered at the West Georgia 23.
On the next play, Mason broke free to break the tie on a 23-yard run.
“Oh my god… that was unbelievable,” Shinnick said. “We were hoping to right the ship just a little bit…. we turned the ball over three times in the first half. To get that (turnover) and have Shomari take to the house on the next play, that was unbelievable.”
Even though West Georgia answered on the ensuing possession with a 15-play, 82-yard drive to tie the game at 21, the Argos offense never lost its edge.
UWF followed right back in three plays when Jarrett hit Caden Leggett on a deep sideline route with a throw over the cornerback’s outstretched arm. Leggett raced untouched for a 62-yard touchdown.
The Argos defense then came up with another big play when De’Mareyae Givens intercepted a Frost pass at the UWF 34, less than minute into the fourth quarter.
Facing 3rd-and-18 from his own 37, Jarrett made his biggest play when he rolled out, escaped a rush and found receiver Larry Rembert for a 20-yard gain. Three plays later, Jarrett threw a perfect, back-shoulder pass to David Durden, who leaped above the cornerback to catch the ball and get a foot in bounds on a 21-yard score.
It put UWF up by two scores (35-21) with 10:53 remaining, which was ironically the same point difference the Argos rallied from behind in the past two games at home.
West Georgia got within a touchdown after its 12-play, 79-yard drive that finished with a rushing touchdown from the 1 with 5:39 remaining. The ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, giving the Argos good field position at the West Georgia 35.
The Argos offensive line and rushing game took over from there. Jarrett’s third-down conversion run to the 22 kept the drive going and set up Mason’s game-clinching run.
UWF is now 29-9 all-time on the road, including 27-5 in the last five seasons. UWF’s defense has forced 16 turnovers in seven games against West Georgia – the most against any opponent – and with 12 of those turnovers happening at UWG’s University Stadium.
UWF finished the game Saturday with 199 yards rushing, 235 yards passing, which continues a balance established in the season’s first game. The Argos now have thrown for at least one touchdown pass in 50 consecutive games.
