Dub’s Birthday Doubles Not Enough In Wahoos Loss To Shuckers

September 2, 2025

written by Erik Bremer

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos began a pivotal road series against the Biloxi Shuckers with a 6-3 loss on Monday night.

Playing on Labor Day for the first time since 2019, and playing on a Monday for just the third time in five years, the Blue Wahoos out-hit the Shuckers 11 to 8 but couldn’t overcome an early deficit.

First baseman Dub Gleed, celebrating his 23rd birthday, was 4-for-4 with three doubles, tying a franchise record last set by Royce Lewis in 2019.

Right fielder Fenwick Trimble, named the Southern League Player of the Week earlier in the afternoon, made a strong first impression in the field in the first inning. With two on and two outs, Shuckers designated hitter Mike Boeve made a bid for a three-run homer before Trimble reached over the right field wall to make an impressive catch.

Gleed’s first double of the night scored Mark Coley II from second base in the second inning to give the Blue Wahoos a 1-0 lead. That would be the only run allowed by Biloxi starter Tyson Hardin, who worked 2.1 innings in his continued return from a lengthy stay on the injured list.

Blue Wahoos starter Alex Williams (L, 4-4), saved from a Boeve homer by his right fielder in the first inning, surrendered a two-run shot to Garrett Spain in the second inning for a 2-1 Biloxi lead. The Shuckers added on in the third, loading the bases before a Darrien Miller RBI groundout extended their advantage to 3-1.

Three more Biloxi runs scored on a pivotal play in the fourth, as Cooper Pratt lifted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to Trimble in right field. An errant relay throw from second baseman Payton Green sailed into foul ground, emptying the bases and putting the Shuckers ahead 6-1.

The Blue Wahoos got two back in the fifth inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Michael Snyder and Jared Serna off Zach Peek (W, 6-2), but clutch hits eluded them the rest of the night. Two runners were stranded in scoring position in the seventh inning, and Abdiel Mendoza (S, 1) left runners at the corners in the ninth to seal a 6-3 final.

With the loss, the Blue Wahoos are now 4.5 games behind first-place Montgomery in the second half South Division standings with 11 games to play in the regular season.

After an off day Tuesday, the Blue Wahoos continue their series against the Shuckers on Wednesday.

Wahoos Fall Short In Extras, Lose Homestand Finale

September 1, 2025

Blue Wahoos reliever Nigel Belgrave had just finished a clean ninth inning with three strikeouts.

But when Sunday’s game went into extra innings, an opposite result unfolded.

Chattanooga produced a 5-run rally in the 10th against Belgrave for a 7-2 victory, giving the Lookouts the series win at Blue Wahoos Stadium and putting a big dent into the Blue Wahoos’ postseason chances.

This game had breezed with solid pitching on both sides and was tied 2-2 heading into the seventh inning. The Blue Wahoos, however, could not generate a go-ahead run and it proved costly.

The Lookouts, who won the Southern League North Division first half race, took four of the seven games in this week-long series. The loss dropped the Blue Wahoos (29-28 in second half, 63-63 overall) four games behind the Montgomery Biscuits in the South Division race.

The Biscuits won their ninth consecutive game Sunday to surge into a commanding lead with 12 games left in the season. They also hold the tiebreaker against the Blue Wahoos if the second half ends that way.

Earlier in Sunday’s game, the Blue Wahoos got a solid start from Jacob Miller, who allowed just two runs, one walk through six innings. They received two shutout innings from new reliever Jack Sellinger.

But their offense sputtered. After Fenwick Trimble hit a two-run homer in the first inning, the Blue Wahoos had just three hits, all singles, the rest of the game.

Their best chance for a go-ahead run occurred in the sixth inning when Payton Green reached on an error and Emaarion Boyd was hit by a pitch with one out. Colby Shade and Spencer Bramwell both struck out to end the inning.
In the final three innings of regulation play, the Blue Wahoos had just two baserunners on walks.

The Lookouts were retired with on consecutive strikeouts in the eighth and ninth innings.

But in the 10th with a placement runner on second, Edwin Arroyo hit a slow roller that stayed fair to put runners on the corners. Lou Balcazar doubled in a run. The Blue Wahoos chose to intentionally walk top hitter Cam Collier. Ruben Ibarra, who won a game earlier in the week, blasted a bases-clearing double to blow out the game.

The Blue Wahoos will travel on Monday to Biloxi, Mississippi for a Labor Day Monday night game (6:35 p.m.) against the Biloxi Shuckers, winners of the first half division race. The teams will have Tuesday as an off-day, then play Wednesday through Sunday to finish the six-game series.

The Blue Wahoos end their regular season schedule at home beginning on Sept. 9 against the Columbus Clingstones.

UWF Argos Use Quick Start to Dominate No. 14 Lenoir-Rhyne in Season Opener

August 31, 2025

It was a memorable start to the 2025 football season as No. 8 West Florida dominated No. 14 Lenoir-Rhyne in a top 25 opening game showdown with the Argos coming out on top 48-21.

FIRST HALF
It didn’t take long for UWF to gain possession of the ball and jump out on top after Ja’Kobe Clinton forced a fumble on the opening kickoff. The Argos gained possession at the Lenoir-Rhyne 26-yard line and took just over a minute to find the endzone when TJ Lane took a short pass from Marcus Stokes 11 yards for the first score of the game.
In the first half alone UWF scored on five of its six offensive possessions. The first three drives on offense resulted in touchdowns. With under a minute to go in the first half the Argos had taken a demanding 31-0 lead.

The longest play of the game came in first quarter and second drive for the Argos when Stokes hit junior wide receiver Tyree Holloway deep down the right sideline for a 71-yard touchdown pass.
Lenoir-Rhyne did find its way on the scoreboard with no time left in the first half following a touchdown catch by tight end Tate O’Bryan. The late quarter drive was setup originally from a 51-yard catch by Zion Agnew.

SECOND HALF
The Argos began the second half much like the first half; with a quick touchdown. Holloway snagged his second score of the night with a 33-yard touchdown catch, giving UWF a sizeable 38-7 lead.
But the Bears began to make things interesting as the visitors responded with 14 unanswered points, cutting the lead to 38-21. Lenoir-Rhyne forced a punt on the Argos next possession after cutting into the lead, but it was muffed and recoved by The Argos to set up a fresh set of downs in the redzone. The fumble was recovered by Jake Robinette at the LR 19 yard line. UWF added a field goal to create a 41-21 lead.

Stokes recorded the final score of the game a couple series later to put UWF up 48-21 after a 22-yard fake reverse handoff run to the endzone.
The Argo defense kept the Bears scoreless in the fourth quarter and held them to just 43 yards on offense. On Lenoir-Rhyne’s third possession of the fourth quarter the Argos came up with three sacks, getting one from Collin ShawWarren Coneway and Christian Ware-Terry.

UWF finished the game with 537 yards of total offense on just 61 plays. Lenoir-Rhyne totaled 372 yards. The Argos gave up only one sack to six sacks given up by the visitors.

KEY PERFORMANCES

  • Corey Scott had a career high 172 yards receiving on nine receptions and a touchdown. His previous best was 139 yards receiving last season against Delta State. It’s just the second time Scott has eclipsed the 100-yard mark in a game at UWF.
  • Marcus Stokes’ 353 yards passing was his highest mark as an Argo. Stokes also had four passing touchdowns (a career best) and two rushing touchdowns.
  • Tyree Holloway had just two receptions, but both went for touchdowns. The junior totaled 104 receiving yards, including a 71-yard touchdown catch.
  • Walker Robinson had nine tackles, including two tackles for loss. Robinson also produced two quarterback hurries.
  • Michael Shine didn’t have to punt much, but the transfer senior made the most of his time. Shine put two punts inside the 20, including one that was downed at the two yard line.

COACH NOBLES
“The offense prepared really well. We took our lumps on offense last year with a lot of redshirt freshman. They’ve played in some tough games and have some experience now, so we expected them to play well. The reps they’ve gotten and chemistry they have, and our new offensive coordinator Donny Baker is doing a great job and called a good game tonight. I’m excited about the offense, but all three phases played well tonight.”

NEXT UP
Up next, UWF will head on the road to Owensboro, Kentucky to take on Kentucky Wesleyan. Kickoff is scheduled for Sat. Sept. 6 at noon in Steele Stadium.

White Delivers Flawless Gem In 7-4 Wahoos Win

August 31, 2025

Manager Nelson Prada leaped off the steps of the Blue Wahoos dugout in the fifth inning, embracing starting pitcher Thomas White for crafting his latest wowing effort.

If Saturday night was White’s second-to-final start at Blue Wahoos Stadium, then what a memory.

The 20-year-old wunderkind lefthander delivered his best home field outing with a five-inning, no-hit, 10-strikeout performance in the Blue Wahoos’ eventual 7-4 win against the Chattanooga Lookouts, thus delighting the customary capacity (5,038) on Fireworks Saturday at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

White exited with a 2-0 lead, thus earning the Miami Marlins’ No. 1 prospect his first home win in his 10th overall start in Double-A.

“I’m seeing what we’ve been seeing a lot of times… a guy who is really good,” Prada said. “(Saturday) he was on it. He was attacking the hitters early, mixing all the pitches he has. And being Thomas White.”

The win evened the series at 3-3, heading into Sunday’s finale. An extra game was played this week due to a makeup of a rainout in Chattanooga.

Fenwick Trimble’s grand slam in the seventh inning blew open the game to a 7-0 lead, before the Lookouts got all of their runs in the ninth.

But White set the tone by silencing the Lookouts lineup after hitting the game’s leadoff batter Edwin Arroyo. White yielded four walks and another hitter reached on an error. Like he’s done in every Double-A level start, White made big pitches with runners on base, either with his fastball approaching 98-mph or array of sweeper pitches.

White, who has risen to No. 21 ranked among all MiLB prospects across all levels, lowered his Double-A earned run average to 1.59. It was the fifth time he’s struck out nine or more batters, highlighted by the record 14 he fanned in a July 26 road start against the Knoxville Smokies.

“On top of all this, he’s a great kid. I love this kid a lot,” Prada said. “I really enjoy seeing him out there, because he has a lot of confidence. I had him two years ago (at Class A Jupiter Hammerheads) when we won there (Florida State League champions). It’s a pleasure to see him pitch.”

White, a Massachusetts native, who has risen to No. 21 ranked among all MILB prospects across all levels, lowered his Double-A earned run average to 1.59. It was the fifth time he’s struck out nine or more batters, highlighted by the record 14 he fanned in a July 26 road start against the Knoxville Smokies.

After being a compensatory, first-round pick in 2023, the No. 35th player taken overall, his rise has been steady and filled with acclaim.

“He’s throwing a lot more strikes,” Prada said. “He was good there (Class A) but inconsistent. Now, he’s really more consistent in the strike zone. He’s developing his pitches better. He’s throwing harder. He’s getting better. He is really close to being where he wants to be (Major Leagues).”

Early game run support was provided by Emaarion Boyd, who led off the third inning with a double, stole third and scored on Dub Gleed’s sacrifice fly. In the fifth, Gleed scored on Michael Snyder’s double. Snyder then singled home another run before Trimble’s bases-loaded shot into the right field berm.

It was the team’s second grand slam hit this week. Even with the win, however, the Blue Wahoos lost ground to the Montgomery Biscuits who swept a doubleheader Saturday against Biloxi to expand their lead to 3.5 games in the second-half league division race.

Northview Chiefs Fall 26-14 To Opp (With Gallery)

August 30, 2025

The Northview Chiefs dropped their season home opener 26-14 to the Opp Bobcats Friday night in Bratt.

It wasn’t the win first-year Northview head coach Doug Vickery wanted, but it was the improvement he wanted to see over last week’s 37-2 loss to Destin.

“In that debacle, we tried to play a game but we had so many mistakes,” he said. “I told them we are going to be a 100% team; we will love one another no matter what happens. They are taking ownership as they make a mistake. They are owning it.”

This Friday, against the 4A Opp Bobcats, Vickery said his team performed a lot better, often coming within inches of big plays like interceptions versus a team he said is one of the best they will face this season.

Chiefs senior Nate Duff scored both of Northview’s touchdowns Friday night.

It’s the team that improves the most between week one and week two that wins,” Vickery told the players in the post-game huddle.

“I think we’ve got to work on our play action pass game, and that takes time,” Vickery said about next week. “You can see the difference from week one to week two, but we don’t seem as crisp.”

The Northview Chiefs (0-2) will host Freeport (2-0) on Friday, September 5. Freeport is coming off a 34-14 win over Jay on Friday night.

The Tate High School Aggies beat the visiting Gulf Breeze Dolphins 48-13 Friday night in Pete Gindl Stadium.

The Dolphins took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Aggies then evened the score at 7-7 with a Miles Delarosa handoff to Tanner Clark.

After a big 60-yard touchdown run from Clark, the Aggies took a 14-7 lead. The Aggies expanded their advantage to 21-7 with a pass from sophomore QB Delarosa to Laquarius Bradford. With about a minute to go in the half, Clark was in for his third TD of the game to take a 28-7 lead at the half.

The Aggies (2-0) will be back in action Thursday night in their third game at home as they host the Pensacola High Tigers (0-2). PHS is coming off a 41-6 loss Friday night at the hands of the Milton Panthers.

Chattanooga Wildness Gives Wahoos A Walk-Off Win

August 30, 2025

written by Erik Bremer

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos took advantage of erratic pitching in the ninth inning of Friday’s game against the Chattanooga Lookouts, securing a 2-1 walk-off win on two walks, two wild pitches and a bases-loaded hit batsman.

Jared Serna backed away from an inside 2-2 pitch from Lenny Torres Jr., but the Chattanooga reliever’s offering clipped the Pensacola shortstop to force in Payton Green from third base with the winning run. Green had started the ninth-inning rally with a two-out single off Brandon Komar (L, 2-5), and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches alongside walks to Spencer Bramwell and Michael Snyder.

The victory marked Pensacola’s seventh walk-off of the season, and their third by means other than a game-ending hit. It also helped the Blue Wahoos gain ground in the second half South Division standings, drawing to within 2.5 games of the first-place Montgomery Biscuits, who were rained out on Friday.

The Blue Wahoos struck first in the first inning, getting two runners aboard against Lookouts starter Julian Garcia on a passed ball and a walk before Tony Bullard ripped an RBI double over the left field wall on a bounce. The Chattanooga righty would settle in after that, allowing just the one unearned run over 5.0 innings in his first affiliated MiLB appearance since 2022.

Pensacola starter Orlando Ortiz-Mayr had his longest start in almost two months, working 5.1 innings of three-hit ball and allowing only one run on a third-inning RBI single from Jay Allen II. Ortiz-Mayr was relieved in the sixth by Justin King, who contributed 1.2 hitless innings of relief to keep the game tied 1-1.

Colby Martin (W, 1-0) took over in the eighth, and stranded a pair of singles in the ninth with a strikeout of Lookouts designated hitter Cam Collier. The game appeared to be headed for extra innings before Pensacola’s two-out rally ended the night in dramatic fashion.

After the game, the Blue Wahoos revealed the winner of their highly-publicized car giveaway presented by Hill-Kelly Dodge. Marian Olson, seated in section 100, won a 2025 Jeep Compass and was presented the keys in front of a crowd of 4200 fans.

The Blue Wahoos continue their series against the Lookouts on Saturday night. First pitch from Blue Wahoos Stadium is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

Homers Not Enough As Wahoos Fall To Lookouts

August 29, 2025

witten by Bill Vilona

The Blue Wahoos have thrived at home this season with a low-scoring attack and late-inning battle of bullpens.

But not right now.
The Chattanooga Lookouts expanded a one-run lead off an eighth-inning miscue, then again turned to their stellar closer Trevor Kuncl to seal a 5-3 win Thursday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

It was the Lookouts’ (65-54, 27-26 in second half) third win in four games this week – two of these finished by Kuncl, who recorded his 20th save Thursday as one of the top relievers in Minor League Baseball.

Taking on their customary alternate identity on Thursdays as the Pensacola Mullets, the loss dropped the Blue Wahoos into a second-place tie with the Columbus Clingstones and three games back of the Montgomery Biscuits in the Southern League South Division race. The Biscuits had a 3-1 win against Biloxi to expand their lead.

For Pensacola, this was a game lost despite 10 hits, plus a sizeable number of hard-contact outs that could have changed the outcome.

One of those was the final out in the game.

The Blue Wahoos’ most dangerous hitter, Kemp Alderman, faced Kuncl representing the tying run at the plate with Jared Serna on base. Alderman squared up a fastball from Kuncl with two outs and sent it to the base of the right field wall, where Chattanooga’s Austin Hendrick snared it to end the game.

Alderman had blasted a solo homer over the left field wall in the first inning.

The Lookouts took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on Ethan O’Donnell’s solo homer off Blue Wahoos starter Will Schomberg, who made his Double-A debut after joining the team Aug. 19 from High-A level Beloit Sky Carp.
In the game-defining eighth inning, Blue Wahoos first baseman Tony Bullard made an errant throw on a grounder with reliever Josh Ekness running to cover first base. The ball rolled toward the dugout, allowing a run to score and runners going to second and third.

The Lookouts’ top prospect, third baseman Cam Collier, then followed with his third hit, a two-run single to open a 5-1 lead.

Bullard got two of those runs back with his opposite-field homer into the right field berm in the bottom of the eighth. The next two batters, Payton Green and Colby Shade, both singled. But Lookouts reliever Simon Miller struck out Emaarion Boyd to end the inning.

Serna, Bullard and Shade all had multiple hits for the Blue Wahoos. Collier was one of five multi-hit nights for the Lookouts, who collected 12 hits in the game.

The seven-game series, which included a makeup game doubleheader Wednesday, will continue on Friday night with the Blue Wahoos’ Orlando Ortiz-Mayr on the mound.

Tate 3, Pensacola High 0

The Tate Aggies delivered a dominant performance at home, sweeping the Pensacola High Tigers in a decisive 3-0 victory Wednesday night. This win not only continued the Aggies’ success against the Tigers but also marked their strongest victory of the young season as they took every set by at least ten points.

From the first serve, the Aggies controlled the tempo, overwhelming the PHS defense with powerful hitting and an impenetrable block.

They won the first set 25-4, setting a dominant tone. While the Tigers mounted a stronger effort in the second set, the Aggies maintained their composure and pulled away, securing a 25-15 win. The final set was just as decisive, with Tate’s teamwork leading to a convincing 25-8 victory to complete the shutout.

With the victory, Tate’s record now stands at an impressive 3-1. For PHS, their loss was their first of the season, dropping their record to 2-1. The Aggies will have to hit the road for their next match, heading to Pine Forest to face the Eagles on Thursday.
