Friday, Joyce Gunn Retired. She Had Worked At Northview High Since The Day It Opened.

Friday was retirement day for Joyce Gunn who had worked at Northview High School since the day the school opened in 1995.

After a decade as the bookkeeper, she became the administrative secretary. Since 2011, she had been the senior finance specialist at Northview. Gunn has a total over 30 years of loyal service to the Escambia County School District.

“Enjoy every day and do the best you can,” Gunn said Friday. She looks forward to spending more time with her family and traveling now that she is retired.

Northview Celebrates National FFA Week With Breakfast

FFA members at Northview High School are celebrating National FFA Week with a variety of events.

Wednesday morning, the FFA officers and members prepared a homestyle breakfast for teachers to thank them for their support. Northview’s FFA program has been recognized as one of the top chapters in both the state and the nation.

Escambia River Gun Club’s Foundation Presents Law Enforcement Student Scholarships

Representatives from the ERML Sportsman Foundation visited the George Stone Technical College’s Criminal Justice Training Center on Feb. 25 to present two students attending the GSTC Law Enforcement Academy with scholarship checks for $1000 each to help the students cover the cost of tuition and lab fees

The ERML Sportsman Foundation presented scholarships Tuesday to two students at the George Stone Technical College’s Criminal Justice Training Center.

Pierce Cotton and J.T. McDaniel received $1,000 each to help cover the cost of tuition and lab fees.

“You guys are the next generation of law enforcement officers. You are the people that protect us. The Escambia River Gun Club has always been supportive of law enforcement and, we give scholarships. So,two of you guys are going to get scholarships today,” said Mike Roberts, member of the Escambia River Gun Club and president of the ERML Foundation. “A lot of times you guys might feel that you are not appreciated. You really are. The people who do appreciate you are the good guys. The ones that don’t appreciate you, they are the bad guys and they are the ones that you are going to be putting in jail.”

Northview Criminal Justice Program Tours Escambia County Sheriff’s Office

Students from the Northview High School Criminal Justice Program recently visited the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

After an introduction from Sheriff David Morgan and Chief Deputy Chip Simmons, the students visited the crime scene division, dispatch and ended their tour with a demonstration from the Escambia County Mounted Posse.

Local Students Selected For EREC Washington Youth Tour

Two area high school students have been selected to represent Escambia River Cooperative on 2020 Washington Youth Tour in June. They are Amber Gilman from Northview High School and Katelyn Mayo from Jay High School.

Judges from PowerSouth Energy Cooperative in Andalusia, AL, and Southern Pine Electric Cooperative in Brewton, AL, scored contestants in their interviews based on their knowledge of Escambia River Electric Cooperative and the history of rural electrification.  Personal attributes of each candidate such as character, academic ability, personality and leadership skills were also considered.

Gilman and Mayo will also have the chance learn about the nation’s capital, rural electrification and more.

Bratt Elementary Wins $1,000 Wellness Challenge For Fourth Year; Ernest Ward And Northview Place Too

For the fourth time, Bratt Elementary School claimed the top spot in the Escambia County School District’s Choose Wellness Challenge, and North Escambia schools were tops in the middle and high school categories.

The challenge was to see which school or major department could achieve the highest level of participation in the challenge by the end of the school year. Participants completed steps to promote health and wellness, potentially reducing the district’s health care and lost work time costs.

At 69.1% participation, Bratt Elementary took the top prize of $1,000 to be used in some manner to promote wellness among the school’s staff.   The most improved award of $500 went to Myrtle Grove Elementary.

The highest percentage participation award at the middle school level went to Ernest Ward Middle School at 58.6%, and the highest percentage participation award at the high school/secondary level went to Northview High School at 55.6%.

“Congratulations to all schools and departments for your success. It is worthy to mention that each winner announced also increased their participation compared to the prior year,” said Superintendent Malcolm Thomas. “So, great job modeling and supporting employee wellness at your locations.”
