Academy Street In Century Will Be Closed On Saturday

Academy Street in Century will be closed Saturday, November 11 from 1-7 p.m. due to a Fall Festival at Tabernacle Baptist Church, according to the Town of Century.

FWC To Conduct Partial Drawdown of Bear Lake In Santa Rosa County Beginning This Month

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Florida Forest Service – Blackwater River State Forest are working on a brief drawdown of Bear Lake beginning in November and ending in March of 2024. This partial drawdown, or lowering of lake water levels, will allow for shoreline nuisance aquatic vegetation control. The lake will not close to fishing during this brief wintertime drawdown.

Bear Lake is a 107-acre artificial impoundment constructed in 1959, opened to fishing in 1961 and designated as a Fish Management Area. Bear Lake is in northeast Santa Rosa County within the Blackwater River State Forest, approximately two miles east of Munson on State Road 4.

Make Your Appointment Now To Let The Miracle League Fry Your Thanksgiving Turkey

Now is the time to reserve your spot to have the Miracle League of Pensacola fry your Thanksgiving turkey.

A minimum of $30 per turkey or turkey breast is necessary to help cover costs, and any additional donation will benefit the Miracle League of Pensacola.

Call (850) 631-0203 with questions or to schedule your appointment (leave a message if no answer). Walk-ups are welcome, but reservations should be made early as the number of time slots is limited and appointments take priority.

There are a few things to remember after scheduling an appointment. Completely thaw your turkey, removing all of the inside packaging and giblets. Write down exactly how much your turkey weighs so it is fried perfectly and take it to the Miracle League Park at 555 East Nine Mile Road at your appointment time between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22. And be on time for your appointment.

Escambia County Commission Cancels COW Workshop, November Regular Meeting

The Escambia County Commission has canceled the Thursday, Nov. 9 planned Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting. The Board of County Commissioners’ meeting, originally scheduled for 9 a.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 14, has also been canceled.

The COW is a workshop type meeting held for commission discussion, but no votes are taken.

The BOCC will hold their nxt regular meeting on Thursday, Dec. 7, at 5:30 p.m.

Peggy Louise Norton

Peggy Louise Norton, age 89, of Atmore, AL passed away on November 7, 2023 in Atmore, AL. She was born on August 16, 1934, in Emmet, AR to the late Roy Clifton and Leola  Tomkins McBrayer. Mrs. Peggy was a lifetime member of Presley Street Baptist Church. She owned and operated Guy’s and Doll’s beauty salon for many years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband James Lloyd Norton; son; Dale Wayne Brown; and siblings Margaret Joy Knight, and James “Jimmy” Edward McBrayer.
She is survived by her three daughters Pamela Kay (David) Hildebrand of Texarkana TX, Karen (Clifton) Blackburn and Terry Kirby Colbert of Atmore AL; stepchildren Shane (Sharon) Norton of Palm Springs, CA, Bryant (Jody) Norton of Woodville, WA, Lucinda (Brad) Johnson of Utah; Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great- great grandchild; sister, Nelda McCool and brother, Bob McBrayer.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at 11:30 AM at McCullough Cemetery in McCullough, AL. Active Pallbearers will be Clay Kirby, Chris Brown, Jason Blackburn, Keaton Brown, Tripp Presley and Dale Brown. Honorary pallbearers are Dawson Brown and Clint Brown.  Interment will follow in McCullough Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday, November 9, 2023 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore, AL.

Annie Arleene Howell

Annie Arleene Howell, a 1966 graduate of Tate High School went to join her mom, dad, brother, and two sisters in Heaven on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. “Miss Annie”, as many called her, was a former paper worker for both St. Regis and Stone Container. Unable to settle into retirement, Miss Annie became a bus assistant for the Escambia County School District in 2017. She found her greatest enjoyment through being a bus assistant. She loved being with the special needs children on the bus. They all called her “granny”.

When Miss Annie was not working, she was spending time with her daughter sewing or playing jokes with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed an occasional trip to the Casino with Debbie, Susie, or Sandra. “But don’t tell Darlene”.

Miss Annie’s family would like to thank all the transportation family, Vitas Health Care for loving on mom and keeping her comfortable.

Annie is preceded in death by her parents, Annie Godwin and Farrell Alton Howell; brother, Alex Eugene Howell; and two sisters, Pam Howell and Althea Godwin.

She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Hart (Dan), granddaughters, Brandy Hart (Chris), Savannah Dees (Colby); grandsons, Jon’Micheal Hart (Savannah), Dan Hart (Victoria); great-granddaughters, Emma, Skye, Clara Jane and Randi Jo; great-grandsons, Dru, Blake, and Westin; and sister-in-law, Sandra Howell.

Pallbearers include Colby Dees, Dan Hart, Chris Griener, Josh Howell, Jon’Micheal Hart, Levi Howell, and Hunter Howell.

Honorary pallbearers include Guy Howell, Richard Howell, Rex Howell, Kenney Howell, Walter Howell, and Charlie Howell.

Services for Annie Arleene Howell will be held at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North, Friday, November 10, 2023. Visitation services will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Annie will be laid to rest at Pughs Chapel Cemetery.
