Five more COVID-19 deaths and 391 new cases were reported Friday in Escambia County by the Florida Department of Health.

Nine Mile Median Crossovers At Highway 29 Closed Beginning Tonight, Other Nine Mile Delays
January 15, 2021
Nine Mile Road median crossovers at the Highway 29 intersection will be temporarily closed from 8 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Monday.
The temporary closures are required to adjust the elevation of the median crossovers at the interchange.
Drivers will not be able to make left turns across the median during the temporary closure. Additionally, Nine Mile Road east and westbound may be intermittently reduced to a single travel lane at Highway 29 during the work.
The following detour routes will be in place:
- Eastbound Nine Mile Road to Highway 29 northbound drivers should travel north on Cove Avenue, then east on Nine and a Half Mile Road, then travel north on Highway 29.
- Westbound Nine Mile Road to Highway 29 southbound drivers should travel south on North Palafox Street, then west on Hood Drive, then south on Highway 29.
- Northbound Highway 29 to westbound Nine Mile Road drivers will make a U-turn at Nine and a Half Mile Road to merge onto Highway 29 southbound; then, exit onto Nine Mile Road westbound.
- Southbound Highway 29 to eastbound Nine Mile Road drivers will make a U-turn at West Hood Road, then travel north on Highway 29 to exit onto Nine Mile Road eastbound.
This work is part of the $49 million construction project that is widening Highway 29 from four to six travel lanes and improving the Highway 29/Nine Mile Road interchange. Work is slated to be completed this summer.

About $1.4 Billion Up For Grabs In Powerball, Mega Millions Drawings

The Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots have climbed to a combined total of about $1.4 billion. The Mega Millions jackpot rolled to an estimated $750 million, and the Powerball jackpot rolled to about $640 million.
Jackpot winners have the option to receive their winnings in 30 annual installments or as a one-time, lump-sum cash option of approximately $550.6 million for Mega Millions and $478.7 million for Powerball. In addition to the jackpot prize, players can win lower-tier prizes of up to $2 million with Powerball and up to $5 million with Mega Millions.
The next Mega Millions drawing is Friday at 10 p.m., and the next Powerball drawing is 10:50 p.m. Saturday.

Escambia County also set a new daily high of 291 people hospitalized on Thursday; the previous record was 270 set last Saturday.

Event Saturday To Celebrate Legendary Football Coach Carl Madison’s 90th Birthday

Legendary high school football coach Carl Madison will celebrate his 90th birthday Saturday in a ceremony with former players and colleagues, friends and guests.
The event will take place from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church and will include a lineup event of distinguished guest speakers, including some of coach Madison’s former players and colleagues.
Tickets are $35 for one person, or $55 per couple, and include an all you can eat fish fry. An attendance ticket that does include the fish fry is $10. Tickets are available by clicking or tapping here.
Madison led the Tate Aggies to a 1980 state championship and took the Pine Forest Eagles to two state championships in 1987 and 1988. He is one of the all-time winningest high school coaches in the nation. Click or tap here to read a previous story about Madison.
