Pensacola Blue Wahoos Stumble Against The M-Braves

The Blue Wahoos used six extra-base hits to slug out a 9-7 win in front of a sellout crowd in Sunday’s finale at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Both teams brought the offense early and often throughout Sunday’s matinee. Gabriel Guerrero gave the Wahoos a quick lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first off M-Braves starter Enderson Franco. The lead was short-lived after Mississippi scored five runs in the top of the second inning. Daniel Lockhart tallied a two-run double before Michael Reed’s three-run homer off Wyatt Strahan gave the M-Braves a 5-2 advantage.
But the Wahoos would not be denied in a game that featured five lead changes. In the bottom of the second inning with the bases loaded, Josh VanMeter hit a shallow fly ball that fell between three M-Braves to clear the bases. Pensacola scored four times in the second inning to take a 6-5 lead. The back-and-forth affair continued when Mississippi scored two more runs in the third inning to regain a 7-6 lead.
The game took an interesting twist in the top of the fourth inning when both Strahan and manager Jody Davis were ejected from the game after arguing with the first-base umpire on a play where Brian O’Grady was deemed to have taken his foot off the bag. That again forced the Wahoos to use their bullpen for the majority of the game. Carlos Navas (W, 1-0) held the M-Braves off the board over his 2.2 innings en route to his first win of the year.
Pensacola took the lead for the third and final time in the fifth inning when O’Grady walked, stole a base, and advanced to third on a flyout by Aristides Aquino. He then scored on a wild pitch from Adam McCreery (L, 0-2), which made the score 8-7. Pensacola tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning when Guerrero tripled and scored on O’Grady’s flare to right.
Alex Powers closed out the game with two scoreless innings as the right-hander grabbed his third save in as many opportunities this season.
The Wahoos hit the road for their first 10-game road trip of the season. They will begin in Birmingham for a five-game series against the Barons before heading south towards Biloxi to fend off the Shuckers.
Reimagine Century Breathes New Life Into A Community In Need (With Photo Gallery)

Reimagine Century’s goal was to breathe new life into Century, where the faithful reached out to touch the hearts and lives of area residents in need.
The event included a wide variety of activities, including a 15,000 pound food giveaway, health screenings, youth and teen activities, free haircuts, baby diaper giveaway, live music, free lunch, haircuts, and much more. There were also children’s activities including inflatables, face painting, popcorn and games. All items, activities and events were free.

A Very Special Rodeo (With Photo Gallery)

The Tate High School FFA hosted a very special rodeo Saturday morning, along with a pancake breakfast.
The event has taken place for over 25 years and thanks to the many sponsors and the amazing volunteers, it is all offered to members of our community with special needs and their families and those who support them at no cost.
After pancakes, the arena opened with a variety of activities — a chance to pet farm animals, a chance to ride a horse, a chance to ride in a wagon or throw horse shoes or bean bags, a chance to lasso a “cow” and after collecting a trophy, a chance to have a photo taken with the rodeo queen

Northview Athletes Place At State Track And Field Meet

Northview competed in Jacksonville Friday and Saturday in State competition.
Brandon Spencer finished eigth overall for the boys 100 meter dash with a time of 11.16, and the girls 4×100 meter team of Celeste North, Nene Findley, Crystal Douglas, and Myisha Syria finished seventh overall with a time of 50.84.
Other athletes that competed were the boys 4×100 meter of Jarius Moorer, Tim Bush, Joseph Wright, and Brandon Spencer, finishing 11th with a time of 44.12. Tim Bush tied for 10th in the high jump. Brandon Spencer finished 16th in the 200 meter with a time of 23.00. Crystal Douglas took 17th with a 12.84 in the 100 meter, and Nene Findley 21st with a 12.98. Ray Bush took 18th with a 5.86 meter jump.

Naudia Carach Of Bratt Honored At Safe America Foundation Symposium

Naudia Carach of Bratt was recently honored at the Safe America Foundation WorldSafe Symposium at the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta.
Naudia, a freshman at Northview High School, has worked with the foundation for the past two years as a teen advocate for safety. Her primary focus over this time was raising awareness about the dangers of human trafficking and support for its victims. She partnered with Clayton County (GA) Emergency Services to create a human trafficking flyer that has since made its way across the nation and to Capitol Hill.
Naudia was officially named Safe America Safe Teen Spokesperson in front of many government officials, lobbyist and Safe America supporters, including the Governor and First Lady of Puerto Rico. Throughout the next several months, Naudia will be working alongside the Safe America Foundation to begin and head a SafeTeen Team of youth advocates aged 13-19 from across America.
The teen team will serve as a youth educating youth program and will cover topics such as cyber safety, active shooter, bullying, and distracted driving. If you are a teen or parent who would like more information on the “team” email safeteenteam@gmail.com.

Large Crowds Attend Century’s Sawmill Festival (With Gallery)

Large crowds attended the Alger-Sullivan Historical Society’s 28th Sawmill Day and Car Show in Century Saturday in Century’s Historic District.
The day included a vintage and custom car show, plus arts and crafts booths, plenty of historic exhibits, food and live entertainment.
