Braves Cruise To 6-1 Series Opening Win Over Pensacola
June 8, 2013
The Mississippi Braves scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, which seemed to be the knockout punch in the Blue Wahoos 6-1 loss to the Braves on Friday night at Trustmark Park.
Blue Wahoos starter Tim Crabbe retired the first six batters he faced to open the game, but allowed a leadoff triple in the third which led to the Braves first run of the game. In the fourth, the flood gates open which started with a fielding error on shortstop Devin Lohman. The Braves used four singles in the inning on top of the error to score three runs and open a 4-0 lead against Pensacola. Because of the error, all three runs were unearned against Crabbe.
Pensacola rallied in the top of the fifth, stringing together three straight two-out singles by Luis Durango, Ryan LaMarre and Travis Mattair to plate their only run of the game. The Braves quickly answered with another run in the bottom of the fifth when Dan Brewer doubled home Kyle Russell from second. The Blue Wahoos only collected two singles over the final four innings of the game while Mississippi plated an insurance run in the sixth against Wilkin De La Rosa.
Crabbe (L, 2-6) suffered the loss for the Blue Wahoos after giving up five runs, two earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts over five innings. Cody Martin (W, 3-3) earned the win for the Braves. He allowed the Wahoos only run over five innings. He surrendered seven hits, walked two and struck out five.
Offensively, Durango was a bright spot with a 3-for-4 game and the Wahoos only run scored. LaMarre added a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 night.
The Blue Wahoos and Mississippi Braves will square off in the second game of five Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. LHP Ryan Dennick (2-6, 3.41) gets the start for Pensacola against Mississippi’s RHP Mitch Atkins (0-0, 0.00).

Police: Boy, 10, Left In Car While Man Goes Drinking
June 7, 2013
An Escambia County man was arrested early this morning and charged with child neglect after he left a 10-year-old boy unsupervised in an unlocked car while he was allegedly drinking alcohol inside a downtown business.
Gerald Lawson Chatwood, 48, was arrested around 2 a.m. Friday. He remained in the Escambia County Jail with bond set at $5,000.
Pensacola Police officer Jeffry Cain was dispatched to the area of Palafox and Romana streets after a citizen’s complaint about young children being left unsupervised in the area. Cain found one of the boys sleeping inside an unlocked car on the northeast corner of Palafox and Romana. The child told Cain he had been with Chatwood and when he told him he was tired, Chatwood suggested he sleep in the vehicle.
Cain found Chatwood a short time later in Hopjacks, 10 S. Palafox St. Another 10-yearold male was with him in the business.
Chatwood, who police said had been drinking, told Cain he wanted to take the 10-year-old boys to New York Nicks to play pool with him but he left that location because the kitchen had closed. He then decided to go to Hopjacks, and when one of the boys told him he was tired, Chatwood told him to sleep in the vehicle and lock the doors.
He then took the other boy into Hopjacks and began drinking.
The two boys were placed in protective custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families and Chatwood was taken to the Escambia County Jail.

Top Of The Class Looks Toward The Future
June 7, 2013
Jazzlyn Franklin of Walnut Hill started last Saturday morning a little nervous, knowing her graduation and valedictorian speech at Northview High School were just a few hours away. And, when she was done, she had delivered a rousing speech and prayer that sent hundreds to their feet in a standing ovation.
“Goal-oriented” would almost be an understatement in describing Jazzlyn. Like track and cross country during her years at Northview, she always had her eyes on the finish line. And as valedictorian, she was quick to give credit to her faith for her success.
“Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior, and I could not stand here today without giving him some time and attention,” Franklin told the hundreds in attendance before leading them in prayer that ended with a standing ovation.
“I’d really like to encourage you to put God first, and if He’s first, He will lead you in the right direction,” she told her classmates.
Jazzlyn plans to attend Florida State with eyes on a biological science degree with a minor in nutrition. And after grad school, she wants to become a pharmacist. She had considered physical therapy as a career. “But I decided I’m not that hands-on,” she said. “I would rather be behind the counter helping people and using my brain.”
Looking toward the future, she’s afraid life will be much different in little old Walnut Hill and surrounding communities.
“We have considerably strong Southern values now,” she said. “But as the world becomes more accepting of things, we need to stand strong to our traditional values.”
Once at college, Jazzlyn said she knows she will miss not having her large family close at hand. As for starting her own family, she said she always thought she would marry at a young age, but so far she has not met that Mr. Right.
Eventually, she wants to see the world, perhaps with a start in South Africa.
