Time Change: Fall Back, Replace Smoke Alarm Batteries

November 5, 2011

Don’t forget to “fall back” and set your clocks back one hour tonight before heading off to bed as daylight savings time comes to an end.

Escambia Fire Rescue is also reminding residents that it’s time to make another potentially lifesaving change — replace the batteries in your smoke alarm.

“The peak time for home fire fatalities is between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. when most families are sleeping,” says Daniel Spillman, Escambia County Fire Chief.  “Smoke alarm maintenance is a simple, effective way to reduce home fire deaths. Children and seniors are most at risk. A working smoke alarm gives them the extra seconds they need to get out safely.”

For more information about fire safety, call Escambia County Fire Rescue at (850) 475-5530.  For information about obtaining a free home smoke alarm, call (850) 595-HERO (4376).
