Junior Humane Society Thrift Store Grand Opening Saturday In Cantonment
November 14, 2009
The Junior Humane Society will celebrate the grand opening of its own Thrift Store in Cantonment on Saturday.
The grand opening will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the new store, located the corner of Highway 29 North and Neal Road. In addition to the grand opening sale, the Junior Humane Society will have lots of puppies and dogs looking for new homes, plus cookies and punch.
Proceeds will benefit JHS activities, such as finding homes for homeless cats and dogs, while also providing unbelievable bargains for area residents battling tough economic times.
The store features a variety of clothing for all ages, shoes, office furniture, kitchen supplies, books, toys, pet supplies and other items with new merchandise arriving daily. It will be open four days a week, but days and times could change in the months ahead.
The store is a dream come true for Frankie Van Horn Harris, director of the Junior Humane Society.
“It’s something I didn’t think I would ever see in my lifetime, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do as a fundraiser,” said Harris. She said a volunteer, Amanda Gifford, heard about the property being available.
A deal was made, and soon, Gifford, along and two other volunteers, Kristi Kirby and Crystal Clanton, were busy preparing the store for customers.
The store also features a wall featuring photos of dogs and cats looking for new homes through JHS.
“We are all excited about the thrift store. We hope to hold pet adoptions, bathing parties, and other events here,” she said.
JHS welcomes donations — just leave items on the front porch if the store is closed.
The JHS Thrift Store is open Wednesday – Friday from noon until 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

700 Flags: Bratt Elementary Holds Honor Walk
November 13, 2009
One by one, students at Bratt Elementary School placed about 700 small American flags in front of the school Thursday morning. Each flag carried a handwritten tag in honor or in memory of a man or woman that has or is serving our country in the military.
“I honored my dad,” said Colton Dockens, a second grader, after he completed the Honor Walk, placing his flag among the hundreds of others. His father recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. “It means a lot to me.”
Students contributed at least $1 for each flag, with all proceeds going toward sending a veteran on an upcoming Emerald Coast Honor Flight. Bratt’s goal was $800, but they surpassed that — raising over $1,200 to help send veterans to the World Ward II Memorial in Washington.
The flags will be displayed in front of the school until November 20.

Man Convicted For Attempting To Rob Bank With Toy Gun; Robbery Stopped By Marine, Cop
November 13, 2009
A man that tried to rob a Nine Mile Road bank in early June with a toy gun has been found guilty of attempted robbery.
William Jerry Strickland Jr. 49, was in the parking lot of the Whitney Bank at 200 East Nine Mile Road wearing a black trench coat, plastic gloves and a blondish wig covering his face, but he never had a chance to rob the bank thanks to the quick thinking of a United States Marine Reservist and an off duty Pensacola Police Department officer.
Marine Reservist Jansen Smith and off duty PPD officer Jamon Johnson observed the suspect as he was approaching the bank, according to Investigator Jeff Van Camp with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department. Bank Branch Manager Christine Coulter secured the bank, and Strickland then fled the scene with the Marine and police officer in pursuit.
Strickland was apprehended about a block away, with a black toy gun in his trench coat pocket along with a note, Van Camp said.
Strickland will be sentenced December 17. He could face up to 30 years in state prison as a habitual defender.
