Ice Flyers Drop Lead and Game to Ice Bears

January 10, 2010

For the second time this year the Ice Bears topped the Ice Flyers 3-2 in overtime. Pensacola had an early lead but yielded the advantage and the contest. However, the overtime loss gave Pensacola a point in the standings, keeping the Ice Flyers in fourth place, one point ahead of the Ice Bears.

iceflyfront1.jpgPensacola continued their recent trend of scoring first, notching a goal at 1:47 in the first period. Mark Hinz tapped the puck in, assisted by Joey Hughes and Kevin Kozlowski. The Ice Bears came right back though, tying the game at 11:14. After multiple saves by Jamie Gilbert, Mike Bulawka ended the 25 second onslaught with a goal. Johnston and Furdero earned an assist in the process. The first horn sounded, and the players went to the dressing room tied at one.

It didn’t take long for the Ice Flyers to jump back on top: just nine seconds into the second period Chris Rebernik scored to make the tally 2-1. The goal would be the period’s only, as the other 19:51 ticked off with no score change.

Knoxville knew they had to score in the third period to stay alive. Vitek did just that at 10:16. Swider and former Ice Flyer Hustead picked up assists and the game was tied at 2. Both teams tried to pull ahead, but regulation ended with the game still tied.

Dan Melnyk took a pass from Pelkey a minute and 26 seconds into the overtime period. He shot and scored to give Knoxville the victory.

The Ice Flyers will take to the road next weekend before returning home on January 22. The 7:05 game against Mississippi will be a Boy Scout Night. Ice Flyers tickets are very affordable starting at just $10 for individuals, and as low as $8 for groups of ten or more. Individual tickets can be purchased online via ticketmaster.com, or in person at the Civic Center Box Office, located at 201 East Gregory Street in Pensacola.

Alabama Football Wins National Championship, Beating Texas, 37-21

January 8, 2010

The No. 1 ranked Alabama football team beat No. 2 Texas in the BCS National Championship game, played in the Rose Bowl Thursday, 37-21, winning the 13th national title in school history and first since 1992. With the win, head coach Nick Saban becomes the fifth coach to bring a national championship to the Capstone.

“Our message to the team at halftime was that it’s a 60-minute game,” Saban said. “I’m proud of the way we hung in there and bounced back at the end of the game.”

The Crimson Tide defense ended any hopes of a Longhorns comeback when Eryk Anders forced a fumble out of the hands of Texas quarterback Garret Gilbert with 3:08 remaining in the game.

Alabama would force two more turnovers and score two touchdowns to seal the 2009 national championship.

After Texas jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a pair of field goals in the first quarter, the Crimson Tide took the lead when sophomore Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram scored on a two-yard rush, putting Alabama up 7-6 with 14:18 remaining in the second quarter.

trent2.jpgFreshman Trent Richardson (pictured), a graduate of Escambia High School in Pensacola, joined in on the ground attack when he busted a 49-yard touchdown run at the 7:59 mark in the second quarter. The long touchdown run stretched Alabama’s lead to 14-7.

Senior Leigh Tiffin would extend the Tide’s lead further connecting on a 26-yard attempt. Two plays later Marcell Dareus intercepted Gilbert’s shovel pass and returned it 28 yards for an Alabama touchdown. The 10-point swing gave the Crimson Tide a 24-6 lead heading into the half.

With Texas’ offense scoring 11 unanswered points in the second half and pulling within 24-21, Anders swung into action, forcing a fumble at the three-yard line with Courntey Upshaw recovering for the Tide.

ingram.jpgIngram (pictured) capitlized on the turnover, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run three plays later, putting Alabama up 31-21.

Senior Javier Arenas came up with his second interception of the night with 1:55 remaining in the game. Richardson turned the turnover into points once again, scoring a touchdown on a two-yard run. Tiffin missed the extra point attempt, making the score 37-21.

With the win Alabama head coach Nick Saban becomes the first head coach in major college football history to win a national championship at two different schools, also winning the BCS national championship in 2003 at LSU.

Saban also becomes the second head coach to win two BCS national championships, joining Urban Meyer of Florida.

The victory in Pasadena comes 84 years after Alabama won its first national championship in the 1926 Rose Bowl game and makes this the fifth Alabama team to end their national championship campaign at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Alabama officials are tentatively planning a national championship celebration for Saturday, Jan. 16. More details will be available on RollTide.com in the coming days.

Bratt Church To Hold Pinewood Derby

January 6, 2010

pinewood11.jpg

A Pinewood Derby is coming to Bratt, and you are invited to participate.

The First Baptist Church of Bratt will hold its “nearly annual” Pinewood Derby on the afternoon of Saturday, January 30. The race is open to boys and girls age three and up, men and women.

pinewood10.jpgWorkshops will be held at the church each Wednesday night in January from 6:00 until 7:00 to provide assistance is shaping, sanding, weighting, painting and wheeling the cars.

“Parents are not only welcome but are encouraged to attend with your children and even build your own car,” Pete Amerson, race organizer, said.

There will be two race divisions. The main even will be for children age 3 to sixth grade who build their car in the workshops. The second event will be for youth in grades seven and up, adults, and any children that take their car away from the workshops.

“While both events have a 5-ounce maximum weight limit, the secondary event allows for more flexible building, although this still does not allow the car to have any type of self-propelled operation or interfere with the track or other racers,” Amerson said.

A registration fee of $7 will include everything needed to build and race your car.

For more information or to enter the Bratt Pinewood Derby, contact Pete Amerson at (850) 324-6923 or email PeteAmerson@frontiernet.net.

Cottonmouths Bite Ice Flyers 4-3

January 3, 2010

The Ice Flyers turned a close 1-0 advantage into a 6-1 blowout over the Cottonmouths Saturday night in Pensacola. Matt Whitehead picked up three points in a game that saw just one goal in the first period, and six total in the third.

iceflayers.jpgAfter losing to the Cottonmouths 4-3 the Friday night, the Ice Flyers were determined to exact revenge. Dan Buccella led the Pensacola push with the first goal of the game at 17:25. With a man-advantage Lorne Misita sent the puck into the crease for Buccella. Bucella capitalized, and Misita was credited with an assist on the play. Columbus couldn’t counter, and the Ice Flyers entered the dressing room with a 1-0 lead.

The second period saw many close plays, but both Jamie Gilbert for Pensacola and Ian Vigier for Columbus were able to keep the puck out of the goal for the duration. Each team fired 10 shots apiece in both the first and second periods; a total of 40 shots and just one goal.

With no goals in the second period, both teams were looking to provide some offense. They didn’t disappoint: six total goals would score in the third period. Sam Bowles netted a powerplay shot 29 seconds into the period on an assist by Tim Green, but then it was Pensacola the rest of the way.

Lorne Misita scored on a Mark Hinz assist at 6:55, Joey Hughes from Matt Whitehead at 8:02, and then Whitehead scored from Chris Rebernik at 12:03. Defenseman Jeff Zatorski added a goal of his own with a powerplay at 14:58. The powerplay strike saw Hughes and Whitehead pickup assists, Whitehead’s third point of the evening.

With a mere three seconds left in the game, it appeared the Ice Flyers would win 5-1. Kevin Galan though otherwise, burying the puck off assists by Tyler Barr and Matt Withers to change the final to 6-1 Ice Flyers. Jamie Gilbert played famously in the net, saving 34 of 35 shots.

The Ice Flyers will face Mississippi on the road Sunday before returning home on January 8 for Military Appreciation Night against the Knoxville Ice Bears. Military personnel are encouraged to attend the 7:05 game, as tickets are just $3 with a military I.D. Also the Ice Flyers will be wearing special military-themed jerseys that will be auctioned off after the weekend’s games.
