Football Teams Honor Fallen Marine LCpl Travis Nelson

Several North Escambia football teams are honoring the memory of fallen Marine LCpl Travis Nelson for the remainder of the season.
The Northview High, Ernest Ward Middle and Northwest Escambia football teams will wear his initials “TN” on the helmets of each player. The football-shaped initial stickers were donated by Ronnie Cloud of the Alabama Wing House in Atmore.
LCpl. Nelson, who grew up in Bratt, was killed in action August 18 in Afghanistan, five weeks after being deployed as an infantry rifleman. His parents, Beckie and Scott Nelson, reside in Bratt. Their daughter is a cheerleader at Ernest Ward Middle School.

Northview beat Laurel Hill twice Tuesday in high school volleyball action in Bratt.

Northview won the first game 25-23, 25-22, 25-16.
In the first game, junior Misty Doran had two aces and two kills for the Lady Chiefs, while Lily Townson added two kills and a half dozen assists. Junor Morgan Payne had three aces, two kills and an assist for Northview, and Shelley Mothershed posted four aces and three assists.
In the second game, Northview beat Laurel Hill in three, 25-9, 25-14 25-14.
Senior Josie Doucette had two aces, two kills and a dig for Northview, as Misty Doran had three aces and two kills. Shelley Mothershed, junior, added five aces, four kills and four assists, while Morgan Payne had three aces, seven kills and three assists.
Northview’s varsity (3-9, 3-3) will host Baldwin County High School at 6 p.m. Thursday. Play will begin with the junior varsity at 5 p.m.

Double OT Revenge: Northview’s JV Beats Atmore’s Blue Devils

The junior varsity Northview Chiefs got a little revenge Monday night in a double overtime win over the Escambia County (Atmore) Blue Devils, 18-12.
A couple of weeks ago, Escambia County beat the Chiefs 8-0 in Atmore. But Monday night’s intense game in Bratt had a happier ending for Northview.

The Blue Devils and the Chiefs were tied 0-0 just seconds before halftime when the Chiefs’ Jeffrey Taylor was in on a short touchdown run. Sophomore Brannon Freeman came up short on a two point conversion, and Northview carried a 6-0 lead into the half.
Escambia County tied the game with a touchdown and missed two point pass attempt with 3:55 to go in the third.
The Blue Devils came within inches of a win as time wound down in the fourth, but a series of penalties and a tough goal line stand by the Chiefs held ECHS out of the end zone for a 6-6 tie at the end of the fourth.
A quick coaches’ agreement, and the game headed into overtime — each team getting four downs from the 10. After the first overtime period, the game was tied 12-12.
First up in the second OT, the Blue Devils were pushed backwards all the way to the 21 by Northview’s defensive line. On third down and 21 to go for Escambia County, a Blue Devils pass was intercepted by Northview freshman Keondre Lett.
On third and four, the Chiefs sealed the 18-12 win with a Daulton Tullis touchdown.
The JV Chiefs, now 3-1, with play the fifth and final game of their season October 13 at home against West Florida High School.

District Football Standings
September 26, 2011
Four weeks into the high school football season, there have not yet been any district games in District 1-1A, while District 1-6A teams have paired off.
In District 1-1A, week five will also not have any district games. Each team has one non-district loss, except for Jay with three.
In District 1-6A, Pace, Pensacola and Escambia all have one district win, while Pine Forest, Milton and Tate each have one district loss. Washington has not yet played a district game.
All of the teams will be in district action Friday night, with the exception of PHS with an open date.

Northview Chiefs Scalp The South Walton Seahawks

The Northview Chiefs picked up a huge 47-8 win Friday night as they destroyed South Walton on the road in Santa Rosa Beach.
The Chief had nearly 600 yards total offense Friday night, with over 500 yards on the ground.

Northview opened the first quarter with a 70 yard touchdown run from Brandon Sheets. With a good kick, the Chiefs were up 7-0 with 10:56 to go in the first.
Running back La’Mikal Kyles was in with a 40-yard touchdown reception with 7:47 to go in the first, and the Chiefs were up 14-0 over the Seahawks. At the end of the first, the Chiefs were up 20-0 after a 2-yard touchdown dash from Mitchell and a blocked kick with 2:46 on the clock.
Early in the second quarter, Montaio Mitchell added another half dozen for the Chiefs with a 75-yard touchdown run, 27-0. With 3:13 remaining in the half, Kyles added a 60-yard touchdown, 34-0 Chiefs.
Northview jumped out to 41-0 with a 63-yard run from fullback Roderick Woods with 7:38 in the third. The Chiefs’ domination expanded to 47-0 with a 24-yard run from Sheets with 1:31 to go in the third.
The Seahawks, managed to put eight on the board in the fourth, as the Chiefs picked up a big 47-8 win on the road in South Walton.
Northview (2-1, 0-0) will finally play at home in Bratt next Friday night with the Chiefs’ first home game of the season seeing the Gulf Breeze Dolphins headed to the country.

Flomaton Beats Jay 47-14

The Flomaton Hurricanes beat the Jay Royals 47-14 Friday night in a rivalry that dates back to the 1940’s.

The Hurricanes were Category 5 strength all the way until the fourth quarter with a 41-0 lead as they put in members of their JV team against the Royals.
Flomaton’s Ryheem Dixon had five total touchdowns on the Cane’s home field – rushing for 161 yard and two touchdowns and passing for three touchdowns and 96 yards.
The Canes had a 3-yard run in the first quarter from Neiko Robinson and a 49-yarder from Dixon to take an early 14-0 lead. The next four touchdowns had Dixon written all over them — a 7-yard pass to Jacob Newton, a 1-yard run for a 27-0 lead at the half, 35 yards in the air to Robinson, and a 15-yarder to Newton.
After the Hurricanes’ first string left the field in the fourth, the Royals had a couple of touchdowns including one from Ricky Cofield after a 90-yard run. Overall, Cofield was a standout for the injury-plagued Jay Royals with 193 yards rushing.
Jay will celebrate their homecoming next Friday night as they host South Walton, while the Flomaton Hurricanes will also celebrate homecoming as they take on Cottage Hill.

Escambia Gets Past Tate

The Escambia Gators defeated the Tate Aggies Friday night, 24-22.

After the Gators jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the first, Tate answered with a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback David Moorhead to Justin Elliot. With a two point conversion from LaVantai Samuel, the Aggies and the Gators were even at 8-8.
In the second quarter, Escambia scored again with a touchdown and field goal to go ahead 18-8.
With 5:39 to go in the third quarter of play, Aggies quarterback David Moorehead hit Alex Westergreen on 35-yard pass to bring the Aggies within three, 18-15. Tate scored again in the third with a 60-yard pass from Moorhead to Westergreen, and Mancuso made a good kick. The Aggies were up 22-18 in headed into the fourth.
But the Gators bit again in the fourth with a touchdown to make it 24-22, Escambia. The Aggies had a chance at the win with about a minute left in the game, but a 37-yard field goal went wide to the right.
The Tate Aggies will host the Pine Forest Eagles next Friday night at Pete Gindl Stadium in Cantonment.

Volleyball: Northview Beats Jay (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview Chiefs beat the Jay Royals Thursday in both varsity and junior varsity volleyball in Bratt.

Varsity
The Lady Chiefs defeated the Royals in five — 19-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 15-12.
Junior Misty Doran led the Lady Chiefs with nine aces, eight kills, three block and 10 digs. Taylor Roberson added two aces, three kills and three digs, while Morgan Payne had one ace, 11 kills, one assist and four blocks. Shelley Mothershed recorded one ace, two kills and 10 assists, and Rebecca Masitias added one assist and seven digs for the Lady Chiefs.
Northview (1-9, 1-3) will host Laurel Hill next Tuesday in Bratt.
Junior Varsity
The JV Lady Chiefs defeated Jay in three — 24-26, 25-21 and 15-11.
Hannah Fiellin had three aces, one kill and four assists for Northview, while Rebecca Grim added two aces, two kills and one assist. Danielle Steadham posted seven kills, one assist, one block and one did, and Tiffani Pritchett had three kills and four assists.
With the win, the JV Chiefs improved to 7-5 overall, 3-1 in the district.
