Football District Leaders Emerging

For the Northview Chiefs, the District 1-1A championship depends on their November 4 homecoming game against the Baker Gators. If the Chiefs knock off Baker, Northview takes the district and Freeport takes the No. 2 spot.
But if Baker should beat Northview, there would be a three-way tie with Freeport, if Freeport defeats Jay. The Jay Royals are totally out of the district championship hunt.
In District 1-5A, a three-way tie is also possible. If West Florida beats Arnold, the Jaguars are first and the Gulf Breeze Dolphins are second. But if Arnold wins, there’s a three-way tie.
In District 1-6A, the Pensacola High School Tigers are district champions if they beat Escambia or Washington. Second place will go to Pace, Milton or Pine Forest depending the outcome of several different games
Huge Win: Northview Beats Freeport (With Photo Galleries)

The Northview Chiefs picked up a tremendous District 1-1A win Friday night over the Freeport Bulldogs.
“It was a huge, huge win,” Northview Head Coach Sid Wheatley said as Chief fans and players celebrated on the field in Bratt. With Northview at 2-0 in the district and Freeport falling to 1-1, the Chiefs are in perfect position to claim the district crown.

Northview opened the scoring with 8:20 on the clock in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run from LaMikal Kyles. A good Kevin Vaughan kick, and the Chiefs were up 7-0. Freeport answered with an even three minutes in the first with a 10 yard TD run and a good kick, 7-7.
In the second quarter, Montaio Mitchell was in early on a 4-yard run. A good Vaughan kick, the the Chiefs were up 14-7 on Senior Night in Bratt. The Bulldogs scored with 8:41 to go in the half on a 40 yard pass. A blocked kick, and Northview held a narrow 14-13 lead. But the Chiefs were not done before heading to the lockers at the half — Kyles scored his second touchdown of the night on a 39-yard pass from senior Brandon Sheets. A missed kick, and Northview was up 20-13 going into halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Freeport hit the scoreboard early in the fourth on a 14-yard touchdown pass and a good two-point conversion for a 21-20 Bulldog lead. But the Chiefs were not content with behind behind, with Sheets keeping the pigskin for a 21-yard touchdown run. A good two-pointer from senior Montaio Mitchell, and Northview was back on top 28-21.
Mitchell was in from 34-yards out on a pass from Sheets with 3:18 in the game. A good kick from Vaughan for the night’s final — 35-21.
“They played extremely well; they are well coached,” Wheatley said about rival Freeport. “They are always very confident and feel very well about what they do. We just came out and outplayed them a little bit in the second half . We got a couple of key stops and hit a couple of big plays when we needed to.”
The Northview Chiefs (4-2, 2-0) will be on the road next Friday night to take on Vernon.
“I don’t know much about them right now,” Wheatley said. “They’ve always got great athletes and always have a lot of skilled people.”

Pace Defeats Tate 24-10 (With Photo Gallery)

The Tate Aggies lost to the Pace Patriots, 24-10, Friday night.
The Aggies (0-8, 0-4) first score of the night came with a 25-yard field goal from Hagen Mancuso with 2:12 to go in the half. The Aggies scored again in the third quarter on a 3-yard run from Jalen Cunningham and a good kick from Mancuso.
With four minutes to go in the game and down 17-10, the Aggies drove to the Pace 1-inch line. Tate hit the end zone, but the ball rolled out and the referees called a fumble, much to the dismay of the home crowd at the Aggie’s Pete Gindl Stadium.
The Aggies will host Godby next Friday night in Cantonment.

Escambia County Parades Past Monroe County (With Photo Gallery)

The Escambia County Blue Devils of Atmore celebrated Homecoming Friday night with a 33-0 shutout of Monroe County.
Chris Johnson, a sophomore, led the Blue Devils with 14 of 25 passes completed for a personal-best 290 yards and four touchdowns — including touchdown passes of 71 and 26 yards to Carl Staples, a 96-yard TD pass to Derrick Williams and a 14-yarder to Malcolm English.

Perfect Score: Lady Royals Sweep Cross Country Meet With Tate, Northview, EWMS

The Jay High School Lady Royals achieved a perfect score in a recent cross country meet at Simms Middle School in Pace — capturing the top five places in a field of over 70 runners from eight schools, including Northview and Tate. It was the first perfect score for the Lady Royals since the mid-1990’s.

“When the Lady Royals started the season they assumed it would be a rebuilding year because the Royals had lost three of their top five runners,” said Coach Stan Blackman.
Robin Blackman had led the Royals last season and went on to run at Troy University. Leely Trevino now attends FSU and helped to lead the Royals to state last year where they become Florida’s top public school in class 1A.
“But this season has turned out to be anything but average,” Blackman said.
Top runners for the Lady Royals were:
1st place Jorja Agrait — 21:53
2nd place Allison Blair — 22:12
3Rd place Jessica Thornton — 22:15
4th place Savannah Brown — 23:03
5th place Jenna Thornton — 23:05
9th Place Ally Settle
12th Place Kristen Pike
Northview, Tate, Central, Milton, Pace, and Rocky Bayou also took part in the meet at Simms Middle. Scores and stats were not available Wednesday from host school Pace High School.

Volleyball: Northview, Escambia Split Games

The Escambia Gators defeated the Northview Chiefs Monday in varsity high school volleyball action, while the junior varsity Lady Chiefs beat Escambia in the final games of the regular season.
Varsity
Escambia defeated Northview 19-25, 13-25, 17-25.
Senior Jose Docuette had one ace, two kills, one block and two digs for the Lady Chiefs, while Morgan Payne added one ace, two kills, one block and dig. Shelley Motherside contributed three assists, one block and two digs, as Misty Doran Posted one ace, four kills, one block and a dig.
Northview finished the regular season at 4-18, 3-5 in the district.
Junior Varsity
The JV Lady Chiefs defeated the Escambia Gators 25-12, 25-19.
Danielle Steadham had five aces and two kills for the JV Lady Chiefs, as Hannah Fiellin posted four aces, three kills and two assists. Tiffani Pritchett added two aces and seven assists, and Rebecca Grim had five kills for Northview.
The JV Lady Chiefs finished their season at 11-8, 4-2 in the district.’

Fish Story: Santa Rosa Man Catches Florida’s Largest Catfish

A Santa Rosa County man now holds the distinction of having landed the largest flathead catfish ever caught with a rod and reel in Florida waters.
Eric Auston Jr., 33, was fishing with his good friend October 9 at 2:30 a.m. in the Yellow River when he caught a flathead catfish weighing 55.05 pounds. He used a rod and reel with 25-pound-test line and a small bluegill as bait, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.
His fish was substantially larger than the existing Florida record flathead – a fish that weighed 49.39 pounds, caught in the Apalachicola River in 2004. Auston said he fishes for flatheads only a few times each year. His biggest flathead prior to last weekend weighed 42 pounds, but that fish was caught on a bush hook.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) maintains records for most species of freshwater fish. The FWC will present Auston with a certificate of his record catch for display.
Go Little Chiefs: Northview Plans Mini Cheerleading Clinic

The annual Northview Mini-Cheerleading Clinic will be held Thursday evening, giving area girls the chance to cheer at an upcoming Northview Chiefs game.
The clinic will be from from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m Thursday in the school gym. The clinic is open to children three-years old through the eighth grade. Cost is $10 per person, and t-shirts will be available for purchase the at the clinic.
The girls will perform during the October 21st Northview Chiefs football game at home against Freeport High School. They girls will receive free admission to the game,ribbon and a megaphone filled with goodies.

District Battles Heating Up

There are two big district battles brewing for Friday night as we head into week 8 of the Florida high school football season.
The top of District 1-6A will come down to Friday night’s matchup between Pensacola High (5-1, 3-0) and Pace (5-2, 3-1). Meanwhile, the only North Escambia area team in the district is out of the title hunt for sure, with Tate winless at 0-7, 0-4.
Northview (3-2, 1-0) and Freeport (5-1, 1-0) both had last Friday night off as they prepare to face off against each other this Friday night in Bratt for the top spot in District1-1A.
Meanwhile, West Florida High School remains at the top of District 1-5A with a (6-0,2-0) record. Short of a a major upset, the WFHS best-ever season will continue Friday night as the Jaguars travel Rutherford (1-4, 0-1), the worst team in the district standings.
