Up For A Volleyball Team? Fourth Annual Scalpball Tournament Planned
October 15, 2009
The Northview volleyball team will sponsor its Fourth Annual Scalpball Tournament on October 31.
It will be a four versus four volleyball tournament for anyone over the age of 14. If enough teams register, there will be two divisions — 14-19 and 20 and up. Teams can be all male or female, or they can be coed.
“This will give everyone a great opportunity to play Volleyball on their level,” Northview volleyball Coach Betty Heaton said. “We are also giving an option to do ‘team shirts’ this year. Any team that wants to have the Scalpball shirt in their color has to put in their registration fees and $10 t-shirt money by no later than Oct 19th. Once a team chooses a color no other team can get that color.”
The tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. on October 31 and continues until the end of finals at the Northview High School gym and at the First Baptist Church of Bratt’s gym. Team fees are $3 per player if paid by October 16. For each week up until October 28, fees increase by $1 per player.
All proceeds benefit the volleyball program at Northview High School.

With 6:35 to go in the second quarter, the Chiefs began a scoring drive. A two-yard run from freshman Reid Bell put the Chiefs at third and a long two. Add in a 13-yard run from Harold Harrison, and the Chiefs were first and goal from the one with 6:01 to go in the half.
Chance Jackson, a sophomore tried to head up the middle to the end zone, but fell short. A movement call against the Chiefs backed them up to the Jags’ six. Jamie Gafford sweep to the right side picked up about two for the Chiefs.
Harrison drove up the middle again, to put NHS back on the one-yard line. On third and one, sophomore Hunter Black was in for the first Chiefs’ TD of the night. On the point after attempt, Harrison was up and over a pile of Jags for two. That tied the game at 8-8 with 3:57 remaining in the half.
But with just 3.8 seconds to go in the half, West Florida Tech scored again with an 11-yard run. A missed point after, and West Florida was up 14-8 headed into halftime.
In the third quarter, Gafford picked up about 40 yards to put the Chiefs back in scoring range at first and 10 on the Jags’ 33. On the next down, Harrison picked up a Chiefs TD with an impressive 33-yard run. The Chief went for two and failed, putting the game back into a tie at 14-14 with 6:31 on the clock in the third.

Trotting For A Cure Brings Adventure Racing To North Escambia
October 11, 2009
The first annual Trotting for a Cure brought the sport of adventure racing to North Escambia Saturday to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
The sport of adventure racing is sweeping the nation, a sport where just completing the race is often considering a victory.
Each of the 25 two-member teams in Saturday’s event in Molino and Barrineau Park completed a 20-plus mile course from the Don Sutton Ballpark. The course included a seven mile bicycle race from the park to the Barrineau Park Bridge, a 2.9 mile canoe trip down the Perdido River, a 3.8 mile run back to the bridge, and a seven mile bicycle race back to the park.

Along the way, participants took park in mini-challenges — everything from decorating and feeding a cupcake to their partner, to a cancer-related word scramble, to a blindfolded shoe removal maneuver to a slingshot event.
Dozens of volunteers were stationed along the way to make the race possible, and Race Director Sabrena Padgett said the race would not have been possible without those volunteers.
“I would like to especially thank all of the volunteers that donated countless hours working on this race and also our generous sponsor for their various donations,” Padgett said. “This race was a success because of each and every one of you and I appreciate you. Our efforts will be rewarded in seeing the future cures for cancer.”
