Volleyball: Northview, Jay Split Wins (With Photo Gallery)

Northview and Jay split junior varsity and varsity wins in high school volleyball Monday afternoon at Northview.

In varsity action, the Lady Chiefs of Northview beat the Lady Royals of Jay in three, 25-17, 25-18, and 25-18. For the Northview, Danielle Steadham had two aces and seven kills; Lily Townson had one ace, one kill and 10 assists. Misty Doran added four aces, six kills and one assist for the Lady Chiefs.
In junior varsity play, Jay defeated Northview. 25-17, 28-26. Shebly Nielson had three aces and two kills for the JV Lady Chiefs.
Jay and Northview will meet again Tuesday on the other side of the river; Northview will travel to Jay with the JV taking the court at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity playing at 5:30.

Week Three: Prep Football Standings
September 17, 2012
Another week with big winners, and big losers, is in the history books, but there still have been no district games for real standings in the playoff hunt.
That will change this Friday night in District 1-6A and District 1-5A with most teams meeting district opponents. For District 1-1A, Friday night will be another week of playing non-district games.

Northview To Host Mini-Majorette Clinic

The Northview High School majorettes will host a mini-majorette clinic.
Practices will be held September 29 and October 1, with the mini-majorettes performing during the pregame and halftime festivities during the November 5 Northview game at home against Jay.

Jay’s Dobson Win Semper Fi Run, Cantonment Marine Second

Matt Dobson of Jay won the 29th Annual Semper Fi 5K Charity Run Saturday morning in Pensacola, edging out Marine David Hanes of Cantonment by five seconds.
Dobson, 43, finished the course, which was in reality a shortened 2.6 miles rather than a standard 3.1 mile 5K, in 13:32, just ahead of Hanes’ 13:37.
Proceeds from the race — about $25,000 — benefited several local charities, including Gulf Coast Kid’s House, Escambia Westgate School, the Miracle League of Pensacola, New Horizons of Northwest Florida, and Boys and Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast.

Sweet Revenge: Northview Chiefs Beat The Chipley Tigers

Call it sweet revenge.
After a regular season and a state semifinal loss to the Chipley Tigers last season, the Northview Chiefs stormed back in the second half Friday night to beat the Chipley Tigers 50-29.
“It was awesome,” said Northview head coach Sid Wheatley said. “It was great to come back and get a good win tonight.”
After trailing Chipley 14-6 at the half, Northview powered back in the fourth to recover from a 29-29 tie for the win.

“It’s great to see that when we are down, this team has the character to know that they can come back and fight through some adversity and get the win,” Wheatley said. But Wheatley said his Chiefs –ranked No. 4 in the state in Class 1A — still need some improvement.
“We need to limit some of the big plays defensively; I’m still not satisfied giving up 29 points. We need to tighten up defensively and not let it be a second half deal like it was tonight,” he said. “I thought overall it was a great character win for the this football team.”
For many of the players, students and fans, the win meant a little more than just beating Chipley. The initials KWJ were written in the eye black on the players in a game dedicated to the memory of Kenneth Wade Jernigan, a Northview student killed last school year in a texting and driving accident. Jernigan would have turned 17 on Friday.
Chipley took and early 7-0 lead on a one-yard run with 5:25 in the first and expanded their advantage to 14-0 with 9:39 in the second.
The Chiefs did not get the on the scoreboard until the second on a 33-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Daulton Tullis to LaMikal Kyles. A missed kick, and the Chiefs were still behind at 14-6. Northview set up a 30-yard field goal at the halftime buzzer, but Kevin Vaughan was outside the uprights. Vaughan is also the Chiefs starting quarterback, but he’s still out at QB with a broken wrist.
Neino Robinson set the Chiefs on fire, opening the third quarter with a 79-yard touchdown run. With a good two point conversion from Kyles, the Chiefs and the Tigers were even at 14-14.
The Tigers roared again with 5:07 in the third to take a 22-14 advantage. About a minute later, Kyles made the end zone from four yards out, and the Chiefs made the two point conversion on a Tullis to Daniel toss, 22-22.
Still locked at 22-22 headed into the fourth, Northview took the lead 29-22 with 9-yard run by Brannon Freeman and a kick through the uprights from Vaughan. But Chipley answered with a 65-yard TD run and a kick, 29-29 with 10:2 to go.
The remainder of the fourth was the Northview Chiefs Show, with the Chiefs defensive stopping Chipley dead behind the line of scrimmage multiple times and a forward marching offense.
Robinson returned an interception 60-yards and a good Vaughan kick, 36-29 Chiefs.
The Chiefs wrapped up their win with a 2-yard run from Roderick Woods and a good Vaughan kick, 50-29.
The Northview Chiefs will host South Walton next Friday night at 7:00 in Bratt.

West Florida Beats Tate

The West Florida Jaguars beat the Tate Aggies 56-7 Friday night in Cantonment.
The Aggies were unable to cross midfield until the second quarter against a strong West Florida defense, and West Florida held a 42-0 lead at the half thanks to a strong offense. WFHS quarterback Joey Baker had just over 300 yards and touchdown passes of 15, 46 and 26 yards plus a 1-yard keeper.

Flomaton ‘Canes Blow Past Choctaw County 42-13

The Flomaton Hurricanes powered to a 42-13 Class 2A, Region 1 win Friday night over Choctaw County.
Flomaton took the lead 8-0 with just over three minutes to go in the first quarter on a 2-yard run from Ryheem Dixon. But the Choctaw County fought back, taking a 13-8 lead over FHS with a 4-yard TD and a 70-yard interception return.
But the Canes stormed back for the lead with a 15-yard run from Gorad Sanders with just under eight minutes go in the half. That put Flomaton on top for the remainder of the contest.
Tripp Vickery was 5 for 6 with 171 yards. He had a 77-yard TD pass to Levi Carden and a 15-yard pass to Dylan Carpenter. Dixon had three touchdowns on the night and 116 yards on 17 carries. Sander racked up 82 yards for Flomaton on eight carries.
The Flomaton Hurricanes (1-2, 1-1) will be on the road next Friday night at Mobile Christian.
Sneads Pirates Take 19-14 Win From The Jay Royals

The Jay Royals lost to the Sneads Pirates in Jay Friday night, 19-14.
Sneads took the lead with two and quarter minutes to go in the first quarter. The Pirates held on to the their 7-0 advantage until the Royals tied it up 7-7 with three and half minutes in the half with a pass from QB Tate Upton to Ashton Dennington.
The Royals were pumped as the second half began, scoring on play number two of the third quarter with a 64-yarder from Upton to Hunter Dillawhaw, 14-7 Jay. Sneads quickly fought back but missed a kick for Jay to retain the lead 14-13.
Sneads sealed the win on a 75-yarder for a 19-14 win.
The Jay Royals will sit out next week with an open date before hitting the road to South Walton on September 28.
