NWE Juniors Beat Eight Mile; Advance In Gulf Coast Youth Championships

The Northwest Escambia Juniors are competing in the Gulf Coast Youth Football Championships in Gulf Shores this weekend.
Friday, the NWE Juniors beat the Eight Mile Giants 13-0. For the NWE Eagles, Jayden Jackson and Jaheem Durant both scored touchdown, and Kaden Odom added an extra point.
The Eagles defense dominated the Giants. Keaundre Richardson had five tackles and a sack, Kaden Odom had one interception and several tackles, Ki-Jana Carter, Donovon Davis and Tomorrion Knight played tough on the defensive line, AJ Hasty had a fumble recovery, and Jayden Jackson and Jaheem Durant both had several tackles.
Shortly after the NWE Eagles win, tournament officials disqualified the Giants for two ineligible, over-age limit players.
The NWE Eagles will take on Trimmier Park on Saturday.

Hunting And Fishing Licenses Now Available At Century Courthouse

Hunting and fishing licenses are now available at the Billy G. Ward Courthouse in Century.
Citizens are now able to obtain Florida hunting and fishing licenses at the office of Clerk of Circuit Court & Comptroller Pam Childers in the courthouse at 7500 North Century Boulevard.
The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and closed each day from noon – 1:00 p.m. for lunch.
The office is open today, but will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holidays. Regular business hours will resume on Monday, December 2. For more information, contact the Escambia County Clerk of the Court office during the business hours listed above at (850) 256-6161.

Northview Chiefs Open Basketball Season With Win Over Escambia Gators

The Northview Chiefs beat the Escambia Gators 82-58 in high school basketball action Monday night. Delayed by football playoffs, the game was the season opener for the Chiefs.
Leading scorers for the Chiefs were Tony McAroy with 35 and Neino Robinson with 26. Other scorers were: Trent Howard, 12; Eric Williams, 4; Cameron Newsome, 3; Keondrae Lett, 2; and Nick Lambert, 2.
The Chiefs were to be on the road Tuesday afternoon against T.R. Miller, but that matchup has been canceled and rescheduled for December 16 in Bratt.
The junior varsity girls will play a game December 3 at 5:30 against Flomaton at home; otherwise, the Chiefs won’t play another home game in Bratt until December 13.
Five Northview Seniors Play All-Star Volleyball

Five Northview High School seniors were named to the Florida Class 1A All-Star Volleyball team. They had the chance to play this weekend in St. Petersburg in front of college coaches for the opportunity to gain scholarships.. They were (picture, L-R) Lily Townson, Lana Clayton, Danielle Steadham, Rebecca Grim and Tiffani Pritchett. Agonizing Loss: Northview Chiefs Fall In Regional Final

The defending 1A state champ Northview Chiefs suffered an agonizing 34-28 loss on the road to Cottondale Friday night in the Region 1-1A title game.
“It’s tough,” senior quarterback Dalton Tullis said following the game. “We worked hard, but we could have done more stuff than we did. I feel bad right now.”
The Chiefs suffered numerous controversial calls by the officials, including a game changer with 1:36 to go. The Chiefs were up 28-26 when Northview’s Brannon Freeman picked off a Hornet pass. The officials called pass interference, setting up a Hornet drive and the go ahead run for Cottondale.
“I saw things differently,” Northview head coach Sid Wheatley said. “It’s big. It’s big. If a couple of calls had gone the other way it would have been a different outcome in this game.”
And as the clock rolled down to zero and the Chiefs down to the Hornet’s 30 on the final play, Northview fans and coaches saw what should have been a holding call, but no flags were thrown.
But excuses and blame don’t earn — or lose — a trip to the state championship game in Orlando.
“We needed to move the ball a little bit better in the second half. We needed to stop them a little bit better,” Wheatley said. “We’ve got to come back real hungry with these guys that are going to return (next season). We need to remember this feeling and be motivated by it. We need to win.”
And in the end, the Chiefs came up short, and the tears flowed.
“I’m feeling pretty bad right now. It’s heartbreaking to lose like this,” senior Neino Robinson said after the loss. “I think we played the best we could; we made some big plays. My team’s great; I have a great team. We just gave up some big plays in the end, and it come back to hurt us.”
The Chiefs were the first on the board Friday night in Cottondale with 8:40 to go in the first. Tullis was up the middle for a couple of yards and the Chiefs’ first touchdown. A missed extra point attempt, and Northview held a 6-0 lead.
On their next possession, the Chiefs fumbled the ball away with Cottondale recovering on the 10-yard line to set up a touchdown and a 6-6 tie.
In the second, Cottondale answered with a 15 yard touchdown pass to go ahead 12-6. With 7:54 to go in the half, Freeman was in from a couple of yards out and Tullis added the two point conversion run, 14-12 Chiefs. With just over a minute and a half before half time, the Chiefs expanded their lead to 20-12 on a 3-yard TD run from Freeman. On the extra point attempt, Robinson was into the end zone, 22-12 Chiefs.
In the third quarter, the Hornets stung with 8:30 on the clock to close in 22-18 with a 23-yard touchdown pass.
Cottondale scored with 6:01 in the fourth before the Chiefs retook the lead on 2-yard run from Keondrae Lett with 4:22. But Cottondale would come back with 41 seconds remaining to go ahead on a 4-yard run, 34-28.

Chiefs Aim For Regional Championship Tonight In Cottondale

The defending 1A state champion Northview Chiefs will lay it all on the line tonight in Cottondale as they take on the Hornets for the Region 1-1A championship.
Both are teams are coming into the game as district runner-ups. The Chiefs (4-6) are coming off a 22-19 road win against District 2-1A champion Vernon Yellow Jackets. Cottondale (7-4) beat the District 1-1A champion Baker Gators 28-23.
The winner of tonight’s Northview-Cottondale game will face the winner of the Blountstown vs. Port St. Joe in the state semi-finals next week on the road to the state championship game December 6 in Orlando.
Directions To Cottondale’s Stadium (137 miles from Northview):
- Traveling east on Interstate I-10 take exit 130 toward Cottondale/Dothan AL.
- Take 231 N for about 3 miles to the first traffic light (HWY 90).
- Turn right onto HWY 90 East.
- Travel past Cottondale High School, take next right onto Zion St.
- Travel to the 4-way stop, turn left onto Thomas St.

Chiefs Honor Volleyball Players During Annual Banquet

The Northview High School volleyball teams honored their best Thursday night during their annual banquet.
They also celebrated the success of the varsity team, which set a school record at 13-10 for the season and second place place in the district. The varsity team is graduating seven seniors.
“Our varsity team was not filled with returning players,” coach Barbara Luker said. “The varsity team was a team that was willing to fight and work together to achieve the win.”

FWC Approves Draft Plan With New Deer Hunting Regulations For Northwest Florida

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission approved a draft proposal Wednesday that would divide the state’s Hunting Zone D (from Pensacola to Tallahassee) into two deer management units (DMUs), each with its own unique set of deer antler-point regulations and antlerless deer harvest days.
These proposals for Zone D, which if passed at the April 2014 Commission meeting, would take effect during the 2014-15 hunting season and are part of a larger, statewide project aimed at managing deer on a more local level and providing stakeholders with a greater say in deer management. The Commission also directed staff to provide an update on this issue at the February Commission meeting.
The FWC conducted a public outreach and input process in northwest Florida during the first three months of 2013. During that period, the Commission received input and comments from hunters, farmers and the general public regarding how they would like to see deer managed in the newly proposed DMUs.
As a result of this outreach process, the FWC is considering rule proposals for both public and private lands in both of the DMUs in Zone D, specifically north and south of Interstate 10. Currently statewide on private lands and most wildlife management areas, bucks that are legal to take must have at least one antler that is at least 5 inches long.
The proposals would require that bucks harvested north of I-10 in Hunting Zone D have antlers with at least three points (each point having to be at least 1 inch long) on one side. South of I-10 in Zone D, the minimum antler requirement would be two points on one side.
The proposal includes an exception to the antler requirements in both DMUs whereby youth 15 years old and younger may continue to harvest bucks with at least one antler that is 5 inches or more in length.
Also, the FWC is proposing a change to the antlerless deer season (“doe days”) on private lands within Zone D. Currently in that zone, the season to take deer of either sex (except spotted fawns) runs for seven consecutive days: Dec. 26 – Jan. 1. In the proposed rules, those dates north of I-10 would change to eight days distributed across four weekends (Saturday-Sunday after Thanksgiving, first weekend of muzzleloading gun season, third weekend of general gun season and the weekend after Christmas).
South of I-10, in Zone D, the proposal would change the antlerless season to four days consisting of two popular holiday weekends (the weekends after Thanksgiving and Christmas).
The purpose of modifying the antlerless deer season, the FWC said, is to spread out the hunting opportunity, so that more hunters may be able to participate without substantially reducing deer populations. These changes would be monitored to measure the impact on the deer harvest and hunter satisfaction within each DMU.
